I'm looking to achieve something along these lines. In an attempt to get a rough idea of pricing I went onto HomeStars to see what other people have paid for something similar. It looks like to have somthing custom made you're looking at no less than $5,000 (looked at over a dozen examples).
Anyone know any carpenters or contractors that do this type of work? Am I better off achieving a similar (not so custom) look using Ikea products?

I did my kitchen in my old house myself. Doing filler pieces, under cabinet trim, built the island, and I can say that it's not as easy as it looks. If you don't have the right tools or have never done it before, you might just wanna pay up.

If you've never done this, don't bother...this is basically fine carpentry that even good carpenters can suck at it (like rob said, it's specialty tools/know how).
I did our office with "built ins" but I honestly don't even want to call it that because seeing what $250/linear foot built in looks like compared to what I built is pretty embarrassing.
It's functional, the fit and finish on custom millwork is an art tho. I want to do a similar built in for my living room, but i will probably pay since it's a very visible piece.

I'd say $5k is on the low end if you're having someone do this for you. My friend did something similar & they ended up paying 10k. Yes, the reality is 7.5-$10k too rich for my blood
Shouldn't be that much, I think the OP pic is under $3k.

Also, I don't think there is any ikea product that achieve what you are looking for unless you have someone come in and trim it out. At that point you might as well go custom, not sure the savings will be there and you will get the exact shelving/spacing and no filled up cabinet holes, touch ups, blah blah.
You will see a lot of DIY items online, some do great work, others not so much. All depends on your level of OCD and what's acceptable and what isn't when it comes to fine details.

If you don't have the right tools or have never done it before, you might just wanna pay up. If I DYI, it will definitely be the Ikea route. No way would I attempt this from scratch. I'd get a lot of help from my father but even then, my schedule doesn't permit it. The only thing is I'd like to change out the fireplace, which is a little more than just slapping some Ikea boards together and setting them on either side.
fireplace inserts are pretty expensive!

THanks, it's ok, but again the fine details suck. Custom built ins you will never see where wood was jointed or any lines/gaps/paint imperfections, etc.
Mine has all of that, let's just call it character

Just asked her, it was over 10k
Not sure why I thought it was less.
$1k/linear foot.

If you go on Pinterest, search for IKEA hacks. Some people have done a nice job of adding trim and mouldings to the Billy bookcases. It may not look as nice as the fully custom, but it's a fraction of the cost.

Custom anything in a home by a skilled trade is $$$, but worth it. In this market, with the supply low for homes, everyone is reno'ing something. Trades are all jacking up their prices.

Those bookcases will do the job, but there are better solid wood alternatives if you are patient watch kijiji for dressers/cabinets/bookcases.
Personally I wouldn't do the ikea thing unless it's in a bedroom or something where only you see it.

Think of it like this, 3 series bmw (ikea) m3 (custom built).
50% of the population don't know the difference, 40% can maybe spot it, but because they don't care about cars they simply don't care to...and then there are 10% that care.
It's the same shit here, except when it comes to furniture/house renovations more people care than not, since with cars it's usually gender specific so you almost count out half the population.
Without getting overly philosophical, I have no issue with trimmed out ikea bookcases, kijiji finds, or custom, I am simply stating that from my own experience having built these and having seen custom ones, to anyone with interest in craftsmanship there is a HUGE difference in fit/finish/quality where I don't even want to call mine a "built in" because it strips away from the quality of a real built in is.
In the end, putting trimmed out ikea in a regular home is fine provided you can live with it. I did it in my office, I am tolerant of it, no regrets, but I would never put that in a main area. To each their own, everyone has different standards, not everyone has an eye for this stuff this is why some homes look great inside and others don't. It's the little details that set things apart, take a stock car or take one with the Jeff treatment...day and night, most don't notice it

If I had a luxurious high-end home, I'd go custom. However, at this point in my life, I'm totally good with a slightly more than basic solution. I really don't care enough to impress anyone, let alone snobs.
This looks decent enough for me.

Feel free to do as you please, no one here is going to stop you
Also, there is no need to get overly defensive assuming anyone who appreciates craftsmanship is a snob either. It is ironic to want to do a "high end" built in look in your home on the cheap, yet you aren't trying to impress anyone. why not just put the ikea cases where you want to put them as they are, I mean you don't care right, plus it will work with the rest of the house?
Not everyone wants made in China garbage either when it comes to certain things. They must be snobs too.
