not go into general revenue, anyone remember the health care premium, that $750 - $900 that you pay every year that goes straight general revenue.

Counter balance

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-dri...rticle32974843/

 Quote:
A previous Conference Board of Canada report showed Ontario drivers pay between 70 to 90 per cent of the cost to maintain roads through registration fees, gas taxes, parking tickets and other revenue tools. In the GTA, it’s more than 100 per cent.

So Tory doesn't have the balls to raise the property taxes, but goes crying to Wynne, who once again gives no fucks about people who are already paying their fair share

Ridiculous. What do they want us to take instead, poorly accessible public transit?

I'm still all for it though, if it reduces congestion on the DVP for the times that I drive into work (and will expense) \:D

Try carpooling!

I just started a group in our office. We're 5 people. We use the 407. Our savings per year are about $3000.

Worth it!

We have to reject people that are asking to join. I'm trying to help out Harpeet, in another division, to start his own carpool.

And that's a carpool from Mississauga to Markham. Not exactly a heavily used route. Just imagine from location x to downtown using the DVP/Gardiner. You'll get tons of candidates, save lots of $, and help reduce traffic as well.

All you have to do is discipline yourself and not be so selfish.

I was going to troll you here, but I agree. If there is a will there is a way. I work out in the sticks and even I if I put the effort in can easily find 2/3 people to carpool with if I was serious about making it happen.

As far as the tax, I have no issue paying tolls if it was going to make a difference where the DVP flows better, etc. But if history was any indication it's just another cash grab with no positive impact.

I got a good laugh out of the guy on z103 today, they talked about how we get charged all the different taxes for roads, basically getting raped, he is surprised the city of Toronto hasn't robbed a bank yet. lulz

It's $2 flat fee for entry/exit, that's dumb as fuck.

Good luck for anyone who uses or lives by Lakeshore, Don Mills or Vic Park. Side roads will be 10x busier when tolls kick in.

Edit: it will spill off to other roads as well making downtown even more of a cluster fuck. Bayview, University, Yonge, Mt Pleasant...basically any major road leading in or out of downtown will be more of a mess.

As an occasional user, IDGAF.

For someone who commutes daily I can see how painful this could be. 20 days a month at up to $6.50/day... it adds up fast. $1500+ /year. Might be more incentive to take the GO train, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

I wonder how they would enforce it? It's not like there's any space for cops to sit on the side of the road to catch people

They are going to do it 407 style, it's 2016 bra no need for cops or b.s.

Also, I got a good laugh out of this

 Quote:
“(People) who live in Toronto should not have to pay for these tolls,” wrote user Kai Tee. “…If you don't live here (then) you should have to pay your share for using the free way. I think this is a pretty fair statement.”

^^^ Wouldn't one just be able to weave in & out of lanes in between the camera points doe?

So enter dvp in middle lane, transfer to toll lane just after, move back over before Eglinton & back into toll lane at Don Mills etc???

I get that in the 407 perspective because it's the whole highway, but from what I understand they're tolling the one lane no?

HOT lanes are different than tolling the Gardiner and DVP.

Why need photo radar though? It usually for speeders, but you can't really do that on the DVP/Gardiner.

I have no idea what photo radar has to do with tolls on DVP/Gardiner? These are mutually exclusive events.

What they really need to do is to get rid of people that don't know how to drive. Get them off the road to relieve congestion and make it safer for others. They will then be forced to carpool or use public transit. Either way, it's a win.

see i don't have a problem with them tolling the dvp, but i know that the money generated won't go to help the city, just in their damn pockets. forget these light rail bull shits, build atleast 2-3 more underground lines around DT toronto to help with the congestion from the toll, but we all know that shit won't happen.

At the speed Canada moves it will probably be 2069 by the time the toll system is in place. That is of course after spending a brazillion dollars studying it followed by going over budget by another brazillion.

All the toll is going to do is get rid of the poorer drivers.

Unless the toll is significant, $10 per trip or more, it will do nothing to reduce traffic, just a cash cow to help Tory's re-election as mayor by not having to raise property taxes

This, most are surviving off of credit anyways. It's not going to change anything on either end.

They need more options, not increasing costs. A lot of people hate driving and would rather take public transit if they had the choice.

Some of the argument against it is that people in the 416 would have already paid for the infrastructure via property taxes. (I can agree with that) In theory, they could just bill people with addresses in the 905. The fact Tory suggest no such thing is that he wants mo $$$$...

Hator is right though, they will waste more $$$$ and time doing studies and it will be a long ass while before this will happen.

you look at how quickly they fixed that sinkhole in Japan ... if we could build transit with just a fraction of that efficiency, some of these plans might actually make sense.
