Ok domesticated peeps, I know most of you are rocking $1000+ Miele models, but for the rest what vacuum are you rocking?
I'm looking to replace my 10 year old Hoover that has its share of problems. Most of the house it hardwood but we do have some carpeting as well as a few area rugs.
I don't want to drop $500+ on a vacuum but at the same time I question how well the $1xx ones are. It seems like a happy medium would be a refurbished Dyson at $300
Upright or canister? I think I prefer canister.

I actually use a Shark vacuum which uses bags from Canadian tire. It's like $60 and it works just fine I have a pet at home too. Dealing with the volume of fur etc is a non issue. The house is all hard floors though FWIW.
I have yet to try a fancy vacuum, but also I am not sure on the need considering how useful the cheapy one already is.

Costco has this bagless Shark for $200 that I figured I could "test drive" for a while. Just not sure I like the upright style. http://www.costco.ca/Shark-Navigator-Lift-Away--DLX.product.100281892.html

hoover here, usual model that was on sale/whatever at best buy or crappy tire.
+1 re. shark above, inlaws had one and it was pretty good.
next i wouldn't mind trying a dyson, not the top of the line one though.
my malamute shedding from may till sept is insane.
As the owner of a dog that sheds from Sept till Sept... dyson is the way to go. Used our central vac right before we tried out the dyson when we brought it home.. the amount of crap it pulled outta the stairs alone was mind boggling.

Been using cheapo vacs for the past years.
Until recently i decided to pick up a nicer vac.
picked up a Miele Compact >> this one Miele Compact in black.
Was onsale at BedBath and Beyond for $299 a month ago.
BEST decision ever. THe thing is light weight, not loud, built pretty well, and awesome for hardword floors. Makes vacuuming a breeze, makes me actually want to do it.
I have a dog as well and things get dusty quick.
Go to a shop and test different vacs out.

Had a Dyson upright and dint really like it. Its actually suction was great, but the canister filled up fast and I had to get it serviced twice because the head kept getting clogged with dog fur. I also found the wand and hose not very functional.
Now have a Miele canister (same as above) and it does everything better then the Dyson. I bought it on sale from an actual vacuum store, so it was very affordable.
Had a normal Hoover canister prior to the Dyson and it was great too.

For hardwood, I use one of these:
So I use this thing and run around my main floor with it. Any left overs that didn't get picked up by this gets pushed into a corner and my vacuum scoops it up. This method is way better than vacuuming the entire floor as I find the fan from the vacuum often blows dust around if it's aimed at a spot that I haven't vacuumed yet. This method is way faster too! It takes me less than 5 minutes to run around with the sweepy thing. The head of the sweepy thing then gets thrown into washing machine with the laundry.
Upstairs, is 100% vacuum as it's carpet. I have an old Dyson DC23. Works fine.

Central vacs blow. Lugging around a heavy hose ftl
From my experience, it's the complete opposite. I'd rather haul the hose up 3 stories than having my vacuum and its extension cord get caught up in furniture, plants etc.

My wife uses this method, but I'm not a fan. Why do two passes with two different tools? We have area rugs so those have to me done with the vacuum. I rather use one tool than two.

Disclosure: we have no rugs in our place for the sole purpose of not adding shit to vacuum... My thought is if you want to step on something fuzzy, go upstairs.

Hardwood floors everywhere + central vac = problem solved You're idiot for lugging around a CV hose in a house with no carpet. Ever heard of this?
You're an idiot for trying to make me spend money on something I just don't need!
Central vac came with the new place. WTF would I waste money on overpriced Dyson products?
idiot!

I'm using a Shark that I found abandoned in the storage locker room of my old condo.
The floor attachment had a wrapper of some kind stuck in it, and the machine was indicating a FULL bag with no suction power.... Idiots...
Will probably buy a Miele from costco when this thing is no longer any good.
