Eldest kid has not been feeling well since Sunday night. Lethargic, no appetite and threw up a few times. Thinking it was a bug, we kept her home from camp but now wife is getting concerned. I say ok, will make an appointment with the pediatrician in the morning but she goes and calls telehealth. And what do they say when you call them at 9pm...go to hospital.
Was going to fight it but at this point I knew the fight was lost before it even started so off I go with the kid. Get there at 9:45pm and wait. Had to shuffle seats a few time to jockey closer to the desk as you can't hear them calling names behind two walls of glass and not even trying to speak loudly. Then we waited.
Finally got to register her in at the second station, it is 10:30 now. Waiting. Get to second seating area and waited, it is now pushing midnight. They call us..yay..no. Now in pediatrics waiting area. Now in the bowels of the hospital, no cell signal and no wifi...waiting, can't call wife to say fuck it.
2:45am, still waiting. There is a screaming baby here and a mother that is at wits end with it to be quiet. 3:30ish get moved into the room to see doc..wait, this is just the general area that the adults are being viewed as well, so much for pediatrics. 4am-ish, see doc, gets a sample and wait some more. Results are in, get a script for antibiotics and on our way home at 5am.
Oh and I woke up at 5am the prevous morning to work out...so been awake for 24 hours at this point

East York General is the woooooooooooooooooooooooooooorst place. Wait lines are so fucked up and unjustified.
I once waited 8 hours to be seen there when I thought my appendicitis was on its way to burst...with NO ONE IN THE WAITING ROOM before me or after me.
Fuck that shithole.

Yup, you finally got a taste of the clusterfuck that is Canadian healthcare. Free healthcare for all, except for middle earners like you and me, its not free at all. For the taxes we pay, the service is absolute shit.
Fuck it, let me take my tax money and pay for private insurance so I can access a private hospital. If that isn't an option, the keep my taxes to fund the public system, and give me the option to purchase additional insurance to access a private hospital (Like Australia). Of course that isn't going to happen, because everyone has to have the same shit level of service, despite not paying the same.

Except Euphoric has no clue. My mom moved from Milton, to Toronto, and couldn't find a family doctor. My wife had to pull strings just to get her family doctor to take her. There are hardly any clinics accepting new patients (Given the way the gov't claws back OHIP fees, I totally understand why. I had a long discussion with the doctor who owns the cottage next door). A walk in clinic is your only option.
Don't even ask for cottage country, or rural Ontario.
I'll tell you a personal story. My youngest sister developed breast cancer, she had moved back to the Caribbean to help run the hotel business. She had insurance, diagnosed one day, the next day she was in Florida getting treated at one of the premiere Cancer clinics. That would NEVER happen in Canada, you'd have to go through the family doctor, wait for a referral for a specialist, wait for time slots for MRI tests at hospital etc etc.
The Canadian system is already a two tier system, athletes, politicians and other of the chosen few can already bypass the waitlists. Meanwhile, nothing else is equal.
For everything else in life, you buy what you can afford, you buy the house and car that you can afford. Suddenly though, healthcare is different, everyone has to get the same shitty service. Its the same as those douche bags bitching about affordable housing in Toronto. Go live where you can afford, its what all of us on the board did.

I have mentioned this several times, but I will do it again since Euphoric doesn't get it.
A retired doctor who was a friend of my family was looking to fly to India to get artery work done because the waiting period was too long.
A lot of Koreans who can afford, fly to Korea to get detailed diagnose or surgery done. My parents, who go there annually, gets full health check there, and it's not free. You make an appointment, go next day, see multiple doctors, wait half an hour, walk out with a full report.
Think how dentists are in Toronto. You pretty much walk in and get shits done, sometimes they force you to take x-ray, ultrasound etc so they make more moeny, and you do right away in house. Similar thing happens in Korea, but with MRI Some hospitals encourage you to go for an MRI downstairs. and in 20 min, you have the full report.

Free health care but you gotta day a day off work to wait to see a doctor wait for results and wait for another doctor cause first doctor didn't diagnose properly.sometimes I don't know if it's worth it to me.

You were doing great up to this point.
You want Toronto to be nothing but rich people? Then tell me where the guy earning minimum wage at the downtown McDonald's is going to live?
You have a twisted sense of society. It's a good thing you're nothing more than an armchair general and aren't the boss of anything!
You should just leave Canada and join the Plutocrats in the states. You'd fit right in.

Medcan is okay. It is $80/month (average cell phone with data plan) for the Wellness Plan, which is essentially a walk-in clinic with no wait. $3K for the annual A to Z exam. They were able to hook us up with an OB at Mt. Sinai and Sunnybrook, which would be super hard as we are Markham residents. Markham Hospital had the highest baby mortality rate so we wanted to avoid MSH.
I was referred to a new Dr. (stopped going to Medcan because they don't see patients under 5 and my son would use the Dr. more than us) that charges similar to Medcan. Not as fancy of an office but we like how it is 1 Dr. (with a backup) so that it's a family doctor that knows us instead of a walk-in doctor that reads the chart. Cost $7K (24/7 care and complete annual physicals) for the family but well worth it, I'd rather make sacrifices like skipping a vacation than deal with the "public" system now.
I love being able to call my Dr. at 4 am in the morning in a different City because I have a high fever with chills and don't know what I should do.
Medcan/Cleveland/Medisys/Independent is as private as we can get, and it will take care of 99% of your medical needs.
If you make $100K/year, your health care tax bill is probably $12K, which bought the wife and I the best insurance coverage from Blue Cross in the States with superior medical care (based on what we received in Cali).

TIL 8-10 hour wait times in an ER that's not busy are totally normal and there are people on the internet waiting in line to "TOLD YOU SO" and "DON'T CLOG UP THE ER WITH YOUR KID BULLSH!T", also "WALK IT OFF" (this is also a country with electricity and running water).

I understand where Euphoric is coming from. Also know it's a roll of the dice depending on how busy they are at whatever point that you arrive.
On of my twins was leaning over on her bed, slipped and knocked her head on the corner of the night table. Decent gash on her forehead, I went to Scarb General and we were seen pretty quickly. Luckily I got in while there was a brief lull so we were first to register and then get called in to stitch her up.
Eldest had a seizure in the car another time and luckily we two mins away from Sunnybrook. I pulled up to the doors of emerg and they took her right away without asking for anything and had a good 5 or more people working on her, once she was normalised they transferred her to Sick Kids by ambulance where we waited for hours.
For the most part I am good with the service we get in Canada but I am also happy and thankful that I haven't had to deal with anything worse than the relatively minor situations we have had so far.
So much this. Too many people use the ER as a walk in, though. I went in with a gash on my leg, bleeding was under control and I wasn't going to die.. Visit took almost 5 hours. Went in with my kid who couldn't breath, was in and our in under an hour.

i fully agree with euphoric (wait wut?). if you have a real emergency (example, big tasty's kid having a seizure) you will get seen fast. cut your hand off? you won't be waiting, chest pain and your ecg looks like hill and gully? you'll be seen.
cat scratch? mosquito bite? itchy crotch? your ass is waiting, and that's the way it should be and that's what walk in clinics are ment for; however, you can thank these people for occupying the dr's time and hospital facilities, a doctor won't stop mid sentence and go see someone with abdo pain while he's telling you why your cat scratch is itchy.
see what alot of people don't realize is that there's a little something called VITALS that let the trained triage nurses who do this day in and day out see through your bull shit and can also know when shit needs to get real.
Wayne, i'm glad that you're sister got the care she needed, but you're comparing apples to oranges. our healthcare system, while good, won't be accessible like private hospitals in the states.
in america they have huge dedicated hospitals to cancer care. you're talking like 600 bed hospitals specifically for cancer care/treatment. these massive centres are basically built and funded from over-charging private insurance companies available to people who can pay for them. great if you can afford a good health plan or pay for your own private care, however it's un-realistic to expect that from a solely provincial funded health care system.
like anything in life yes, there are ways to bypass the system. i'll share someting, my aunt was diagnosed with a blood cancer with mets to her ribs. another aunt works at scarb grace and she was able to get her diagnostic imaging done right away, it wasn't that we asked for it, it's not fair to other people, but the staff there had put the request in without us knowing. there are ALOT of people who think (and receive) faster and preferred service based on their donations to the hospital(s). my aunt has been from scarb grace, to princess margaret, to NYGH, to sunny brook but after all her treatment and running around the end result is that the cancer is gone hopefully and she's on the path to recovery taking just a maintence pill medication. what i'm getting at is that even tho it's not perfect, the system DOES work.
but back to the topic at hand, people have unreasonable expectations of the emergency department and it was abused way too much. you have grown ass people complaining about wait time, yelling & screaming that they arn't being seen, being dramatic throwing themselves on the floor for attention, when they say that they have a fever yet their temp says a different story; not to mention that you get a fever approx once a year, so they've been through this at least 20 times before, and they haven't even tried to take any advil or tylenol or nyquil to fight this fever.
edit: let's face it, the only way that this is going to change is if they tax more and/or these fucking greedy politicians stop stuffing their own pockets and direct money into proper venues. when it comes to health care, they throw just enough money to keep people quiet then spend the rest on pizza parties and limos to work.

again, it depends on your emergency. yes, you had to wait weeks for your MRI, but if someone came in with a bad head injury or something and the doc ordered a MRI, it would be done right then and there.
about 90% of people have the misconception that because you come in with an ambulance that you will get seen faster or that it's more of a priority than walking through the door when that is not true. every ambulance that comes through the hospital is triaged just the same as any person coming in. If anything it would take longer (not my hospital because we have the fastest triage ems offload times in the province) because there is only 1 dedicated triage nurse specifically for EMS patients while there can be up to 3 for non EMS patients.
again, saying this country has this and this country has that holds no merit. look, cuba has the best health care system yet most of the country lives in poverty.
If someone gets diagnosed with a major disease like a brain tumor or something then that person will get priority, i'm not saying that things are super fast and i'm not saying that things can change and or worsen while in that waiting time or that doctors misdiagnose, what i'm saying is that there is an acuity system in place. also don't forget the people who demand a MRI or CT scan because their sister in law back home is a "doctor" and says they need one.

I know all the rave is about Cuba's healthcare system, but I don't see it.
Their doctors all have part time jobs as vendors selling t shirts in Havana, not sure how good they really can be when practicing medicine isn't their first priority (surviving is).

Oh snap....
I remember when I used to be a strong supporter of the 'free' healthcare in Canada. I got into a discussion with my manager in Chicago who told me about a condition that his neice had. The drug would not be covered by any province in Canada due to the cost, but it was covered in the US by her private insurance. Because of that drug, she was live. Seems like the same thing here.
What good is free healthcare when it allows you to die....

What if someone with cancer or other serious disease had to wait a month or two to see the specialist, then find out it's too late?
This happened in BC. Some guy with a really aggressive from of cancer had to wait 6 weeks for a specialist. His Korean wife took him to Korea for treatment instead and it was all done in a matter of days. The Korean Doctors said that he'd be dead in 3 weeks if it weren't for the treatment.
Read that on the Star some time last year... I think.

His Korean wife took him to Korea for treatment instead and it was all done in a matter of days. The Korean Doctors said that he'd be dead in 3 weeks if it weren't for the treatment. That's so sad in a first world country, really makes you think.
Ok... my facts were a bit off. But the gist of the story is: Korean doctors saved his life while BC doctors made him wait.

Then smuggle it back into Canada and then the US.
Such amaze.
Now he can skip the flight through Toronto...but the drug still isn't approved yet. Doctors had given him months to live. It's been years on this stuff and he's still alive.
You can find examples everywhere. There are pros and cons to every system out there.

Read that on the Star some time last year... I think.
I'm sorry, but that's complete dog shit.
of course the treating physicians in korea will knock the other docs because they want to look all high and mighty, but the fact of the matter is that they are not God, they can not tell exactly when a person is going to kick. the korean doctors could also say that the sky is orange doesn't mean that they are right, they sound more ignorant than anything. every person reacts differently to the medication and treatment of cancer, one medicine may have better effects than the other, at the end of the day it's a matter of educated opinions when it comes to timelines; that patient's tumor could have ruptured a bowel and he could have died from sepsis in a day, you never know.

^ didn't read properly! It's about wait times!
you obviously don't have any idea what you are talking about just regurgitating what the media throws at you.
what kind of cancer did he have that concluded that he only had x amount of time?
what kind of doctor gave this diagnosis?
what kind of doctor was he waiting to see?
what was his "treatment" that he got in korea that only took 3 days. i'm sure he didn't go through ALL of his rounds of chemo in 3 days because that would kill him.
if you want to be another sheep being fed the bs from the media without knowing shit then go right ahead, but ask yourself this, how would the media know any specifics considering patient confidentiality?
i'll wait.

...Its the same as those douche bags bitching about affordable housing in Toronto. Go live where you can afford, its what all of us on the board did.
The problem with socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money
You were doing great up to this point. You want Toronto to be nothing but rich people? Then tell me where the guy earning minimum wage at the downtown McDonald's is going to live? You have a twisted sense of society. It's a good thing you're nothing more than an armchair general and aren't the boss of anything! You should just leave Canada and join the Plutocrats in the states. You'd fit right in.

These are people absolutely deserving of subsidized, dare I say even free housing. People who have contributed to this country by putting themselves in harms way. Not just those with a hand out who believe they deserve to live in toronto regardless of the cost. You may as well buy them a Lexus while you are at it, after they probably deserve that too... /sarcasm
