Weigh your box before going to airport!
I'm sure being a road bike it's pretty light but Air Canada are mother fuckers.
After 50lbs. overweight fees kick in and last time I went I was at 51lbs and she said I either had to pay the fees or take stuff out, had to put pedals and misc. stuff in carry on to get the weight down.
I remember paying $75 to take a bike with Air Canada, West Jet was $50.

Case and bike are 55lbs I am already at the limit with my carry on.

The way this is going I may be better off buying a new road bike there and then dumping it in the ocean when I am done.

So I just checked in my bike no one weighed it and they didn't ask me to pay extra for it as per the website? Maybe some dude that works in luggage handling is riding it home now.

If you are going with only a carry on I believe your bike can count as a checked bag, worked out good I guess. Keep us updated.

You might be right. I flew business class so maybe that's why, I thought only for first class they waive these fees for extra large luggage. As per frequent flyer forums and slow twitch you can't check bike boxes as regular checked in bag.

Haven't slept for 36 hours, feels sick man. Supposed to do my big ride tomorrow, calling for rain and wind gusts of up 50km/h.

Anyway, on to some riding:

Earlier today:

This place is a lot like Greece in many respects, but having the ocean > sea is a huge diff. People surfing in this shit too, it was pretty rough.

I forgot my map in the room and got lost so ended up in places like these, was really nice to see. Exploring a European city by bike is probably the single best way of doing it imo.

It's pissing buckets of rain here so I will take my rental and drive out into the country side and check out my alternate route for tomorrow. I can't do the original route anymore, they are calling for snow in parts of it and thunderstorms. I am going a little more north in Portugal as per the radar they are only supposed to get some drizzle. Re-mapped a new route towards Vila Real, the route stats are fairly similar, views not as epic though.

Preview of tomorrow from today's cruise, not pictured cyclist on side of road.

So at what point do I call it quits? It looks like rain/wind like today, in some points the wind was really bad especially at higher altitude.

I didn't fly out here to look at the bike in my room, but I am also trying to put some sort of value on my life, right now it's not looking high.

Epic ride was epic, now off to work \:\(

Rollercoaster of a ride, from crazy downpours to miles upon miles of ridiculous climbing in the granny ring, was debating pulling a stickaz at one point and walking it lolz.

I was taking more pics at first, but it started killing the buzz of bombing down the hills so I said fuck it. Didn't come here to document this shit and put camera away for the remainder of ride \:\)

Original plan was to ride on Monday because I had all day, due to weather I rode today and had my first meeting at 3pm local so I basically had to limit myself to a total of 3 hours of riding in that time (not including 2 hours commute to/from mountain) so the ride was only 60km with ~6k feet of vert as per my estimates. I can't see my garmin data yet because work computer.

Based on how I was feeling, despite riding in shit conditions, not having brakes on most of the crazy downhills, etc I am positive I could've pulled off double the distance vert over 5-6 hours at this pace.

I was thinking about what stickaz said, keep heart rate in zone 1/zone 2, but the reality on climbs that are 17km long you can't pick your zone. I was pegged at about 155-160 bpm for an hour+ during the first 11 mile uphill. Holding that for the time wasn't difficult, legs killed, but it wasn't the end of the world.

All in all, hills aren't that physically tough, it's more mental than anything else (this it talking survival/making it/etc - if you are good shape shouldn't be an issue). Going fast uphill is different, you have to be a nato, he'd probably average 20mph up this shit.

This post is making me think of cycling in Majorca. I wonder if I'll get laughed at renting a bike with no clips?
