I think I might have made a mistake when I borrowed my friend's D600 the other day. Once I opened the files in Lightroom, they were noticeably better than what I get from my K-30 in terms of noise and overall IQ, even compared to the higher end Pentax lenses I have now or have rented (HD DA20-40mm f2.8-4 Limited, DA*50-135 f2.8, DA*60-250 f4, SMC DA40mm f2.8 Limited, SMC DA21mm f3.2 Limited, SMC DA70mm f2.4 Limited). I took to the controls quickly and like the basic layout of the camera. I've never liked how Canon's feel, but have only really ever handled Rebels.

I'm mostly shooting landscapes (including Auroras) and wildlife, increasingly doing some portrait work. I'm thinking a D750 with the 24-120 f4 VR http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082604-REG/nikon_d750_dslr_camera_with.html

plus a super-telezoom like the new Tamron 150-600 plus (eventually) a couple primes would cover just about everything I'd want to do.

Right? Wrong? Should I consider a 6D instead? I'd be selling off my Pentax gear completely. I do know Pentax is supposed to release a full-frame camera in 2016, but I would have to trade out all of my lenses except the DA40mm f2.8 Limited anyway so I'm considering switching systems completely.

When it comes down to it, nothing really competes with the Nikon/Canon lineup...except the new Sony lineup. But i'd ditch your lineup quickly and get at least a D600, maybe a D610, but the D750 is a great camera. You can find used D800's pretty cheap nowadays.

The 24-120 is great, but you'll likely want something wider eventually. Nikon 14-24, 16-35 or the Tokina 16-28 or Tokina 17-35.

I've switched from Canon to Sony, but I've always liked the ergos of Nikon. For landscape work though, I'd probably go Sony. The size/weight advantage is real, and the sensors are second to none.

The Canon pro ergonomics are much, much better than the Rebels, imo - but still don't fit me like Nikon's. The reduced size of the Sony stuff sounds nice when carrying it long distances, but I wonder how it fits bigger hands?

If it was all about ergos I'd wait for the K1 or just buy the Pentax K3ii. Which is actually what I'm more and more leaning towards (the K3ii). $1800 less, don't have to bother with selling everything, still a big jump in IQ that's probably 90-95% of the D750, and I want to try the sensor shift mode out on macro images and landscapes up here. Plus I like the glass that I have and what's available.

Ok, just saw that the Canon USA store has a refurbished 6D on sale for $999. I buy now?

I looked, it is a shame there isn't an autofocus adapter to use your K mount lenses on Sony E mount. All I could find were manual focus/aperture adapters. Focus peaking still makes it easy for everything but quick action shots.

I'm not really looking the sony's though, still like my OVF's too much. I wouldn't bring my Pentax glass anyway since its sized for APS-C for the most part.

Is a $1000 6D a better overall camera/system then staying with Pentax and getting a K3ii at $730? That's my current waffle.

I'm not sure what I'd do there. Obviously a new APS-C camera would be a downgrade compared to a new full frame body in some ways. But besides the greater lens and camera costs, there are other plusses and minuses of each.

From the pictures you have posted, you seem to mostly stick to landscape and family portrait pictures. High frame rates with quick focusing probably don't matter so much to you. Full frame sounds like a win for your chosen use. That is how I would look at it anyway.

I used to shoot mainly with a 6d, just upgraded to 5d3. The 6d is a great camera in terms of image quality. The high-ISO noise handling is really good. I'll still grab that over the 5d3 when then the subject is static and light is low. A 6d with the 11-24mm would be awesome for aurora and landscape shots, since you'd be starting over with lenses. This combo is around $3500 for body and lens.

If you're looking at Canon, there is the 1dx mark2 and 5d mark4 on the horizon for 2016 and rumors of a 6d mark2 as well, so it may be worth holding out a little longer to see the final specs on those or take advantage of the price drops on the outgoing models, which are still great cameras.

The Sony's are the new hotness in sensor tech and the a7s2 is supposedly better than the 6d in terms of low light and high ISO performance, but then you're in the $3k body-only range. Not sure what you're looking to spend, especially considering the need for new glass too.

I thought so too, until I really spent time with them. Focus aids, being able to preview magnified DOF, zebras to help judge ETTR exposure, customizable overlays, getting to look at anything you'd look at on the rear screen in any light since the EVF is more or less totally shaded, it's just so goddamn nice. I will say that I hope the 4M dot EVF in the new Leica gets utilized more, as the common 2.36M dot is lacking a bit of resolution.

Not supposedly. The R2 is better than anything that Canon makes now in terms of noise, and the S2 is better than that. The noise on the Sony sensors is much nicer looking, very film grain like unless you push it too far. Canon's are band-y and much more digital looking.

I should have clarified that I have no first-hand experience with the Sony's, that was why I said "supposedly", not that I was questioning the reviews, just that I don't know personally. My comments on the 6D were from my experience. Sorry about that.

No biggie. I'm not sure why Canon's sensors are like that, but even the 5DSR is still that way, shadows are very ugly when pushed even a few stops.

My local camera store got in a new Canon 6D finally after the holidays. I'm very very glad I didn't order one after getting a chance to play with it. The ergo's are just horrible, especially coming from Pentax, the layout and I didn't get along at all, and overall it just felt kinda cheap.

What about the new full frame Pentax. It looks promising. I read that it has a crop mode to make use of your current Pentax APS-C glass.

New Pentax looks pretty boss. The build looks nice, and that sensor is amazing, if they can pull even more DR and better noise performance from the sensor shift mode or whatever they call it that's just crazy icing on the cake. The 15-30 and 24-70 Tamron knock offs are pretty good quality, though I don't know if they really impress at 36 MP (I had the Tammy 24-70 on my A7R, it didn't balance well on the small body plus adapter and the image quality wasn't stellar). The AF system is a real question mark too. On chip phase detect for lyfe, it's nice not to give a shit about calibrating lenses. I'd still lean Sony. Their lineup of small, quality primes is pretty solid at this point and there's a few more in the pipeline.

Everything I've read on the Tamron 24-70 has it as more than a match to the Nikon and Canon OE glass, and that's before adding Pentax's coatings, tweaks, and weather sealing.

I could live pretty happy with the 15-30, the 31 1.8, 43 1.9, and 77 1.8 FA limiteds, the DA*55 f1.4, and a 70-200. At least until my wife found out.

Buy the following...

Canon 5D Classic = $400
Canon 24-70mm 2.8 MKII (used) = $1500
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 MKII (used) = $1500

Boom!

Why would I go backwards with camera IQ by getting that old of a camera?

So you can get the $3000 worth of reasons I posted.

And you're funny if you think a 5D3 mkiii produces noticeably better IQ than a mki.

But hey, it's your cash. If video is a must, then yeah...no mki. The mki gets you into full frame with a legendary sensor at that. Native 3200 iso expandable to 6400 is small compared to the mkiii, but you can beat the fuck out out of the RAW files in post because of the sensor's pixel size. It's almost like getting 1 to 2 extra stops in post.
