SF marathon, July 31

Nothing like a hilly route for my first time. Ill have run the first half (has 65% of the vert) twice by then tho as I keep signing up for the half

I figure I have a pair of noob 12 week blocks to extend my current long run capability before then starting mid January

I have a target time but I figure I better just finish and avoid the crying/walking post mile 18, the first half of that course is kind of a bitch

Finally got off the hovering over submit button for the last year or so.

I'm around 25 mpw now and plan on bumping that to 35 a couple times during training, but will probably avg 25 ish from now till then if ya'll want to poke fun at me :p

The course is nice I think and you basically loop the city, I've run all these legs before just not all at once heh

This is part of my secret/bucket plan to finish a 140.6 at some point around a pedestrian 12 hrs (yea should do a 70.3 first obv)

Congrats man...I knew you'd do it eventually, although I'm more impressed with the 140.6 ambition. FYI, my fastest was at AZ with an 11:35 and that was with a 4:45 marathon...so yeah, I hope you can run better off the bike than I could.

I assume standard/ok swim, mid-pack bike, and off-the-cliff-bad run [like every tri I've ever done]

Yeah nice, in my mind I'm looking 1:10 swim, 6h bike, 5h run, and 50 min fudge factor for transitions/crying/being slower than expected

Only the swim is something I can do now heh. Well the crying I've got covered too I suppose :p

3 weeks out! and I have [2] runs YTD over 13.1m [a 17 and an 18]

have also performed: almost zero hill training

got nowhere near my planned 25-35 mpw goal [20 mpw YTD avg]

and yet I still expect to sneak under 4H

There's a 3:55 pace group I will probably either latch to or try to keep in sight

from now till the race I will do [1] LSR over 13.1 [planning on an 18 early next week so I can uber taper hehe, I figure my best bet now is a monster taper lol]

monster taper is going well lol

I've curtailed biking, and when I do I do it super low effort lol. I was actually doing 14-15 mph on the flat bike trail when I bike commuted monday haha. Will probably do one more of those this week and a final bike commute like next tues

running ramped down in mileage and intensity lol. Got a solid 13.5 run in last weekend with a 10k the day before it for a final tune-up, easily did it at expected marathon pace effort level. The 5 miler on friday followed by a 20 on saturday the week before that [my final LONG run] didnt go as well tho, oh well. trying to forget about that.

tomorrow I'm running the golden gate park loop at/around marathon pace to get used to that segment [miles 13 through 19 of the course] and the hills/climbing in there as I imagine I will be mentally tested there so best to be familiar with it [I've walked it before but never jogged]. Hopefully my running buddy will respect my need to run it at 9:00/pace lol

swimming I'm going super easy too hehe. Don't want to lose my 'feel' for the water so I'm still swimming but whatev, doing it easy/moderate pace only.

This weekend a final 6-8 miler at marathon effort on a hill because SF a week out then it's just a couple of 3 mile or so yogs just to keep my feet moving.

Already starting to 'feel' the energy level come up a bit. 3 week tapers are awesome, just hope I dont get sick/fat lol.

Trying to roll-into the race at about ~187# in the morning which would include additional carbo loaded/water weight hehe. My evening weigh-ins are about 190# still so I've got to drop about 2# to get there still [10 days], which doesn't seem to hard. Just have to eat less until it's 48 hours then its NOM time.

I routinely run 7-8 miles, but my legs hate me at the end. Can't imagine more than trippling it.

something like that, weighed in at 188.5# post-dinner/pre-swim last night which is a good thing. Managed to drop/hold ~6# through my taper so at least that aspect of it I guess I've hit.

5k jog today I think I will back off on a little bit too lol. Maybe just 2 miles of it at planned MP [9:00/mi], tuesday I ran the whole 5K at that pace and I was kind of a mess, even hit HR into the 140 range [temp was hot as fuck tho], in colder weather thats a mid 120 HR pace for me. Yikes.

anyways light jog today, Friday: nada, Saturday: nada, Sunday: pain

lol

missed my <4:00:00 goal, but given the elevation and my 'first timer' status and [lack] of preparation [3 total runs over 13 miles all year, and only 1 since early feb lol] I'm happy with it.

Mark Zuckerberg did the first half lol, didnt see him but saw the pics

I negative splitted ever so slightly [~2:02:30 and 2:00:15], but my legs gave out on me relatively early. I think the downhills were harder on me than the up. Not enough hill training this year.

I felt like my cardio system was operating well in the 'safe' zone, just have to toughen up my legs to speed up a bit from here.

carnage report:

right quad starting cramping around mile 11 a bit, twinging. This was disconcerting. I didnt want any bullshit until mile 20 like that, wasnt prepared for my body to start failing so early lol. By mile 16 and in the "shit" as I was planning for it [the final hilly area of Golden Gate Park, miles 13-19] my left quad starting feeling like my right had, and now my right was getting worse and getting harder for me to stride properly.

Legs gradually kept getting worse through golden gate park but I made it out only about 2-3 minutes over my pace goal so I felt with the rest of the course being basically flat, that I was ready to hang it out and break 4 hrs

So in a mixture of pain, cramping, fatigue, and all that I start dropping the pace to ~7:45 -- 8:30 or so for as long as my legs hold out which was right until about mile 24-ish, from there I had to slow up to ~8:45 pace or so which I knew would miss my goal so I struggled a bit to rally and try to bring my pace back down.

I failed and my legs then progressed to actually giving out right at/around mile 25. From there I couldnt hold a pace much under/at 10:00/mi and held that through the end.

My peak negative thought occured around mile 24 when I contemplated taking my shirt off and walking off the course lol as it started to feel like a major bonk was coming. That was a little premature but I also realized there was no way I was running 8:00/mi pace in the flat section of the embarcadero to sneak under 4:00:00 that I had been shooting for since leaving golden gate park. Just couldnt do it so for a moment or three I contemplated walking off. Then I started realizing how ridiculous a DNF right on the embarcadero would feel so I moved into 'plan B' or 'plan C' which was simply "dont walk"

Still I consider it a really good effort giving my preparation/lack of long runs. I ran a conservative race and found the wall more or less about as late in the race as you possibly can. Couldnt ask for a more complete effort with my fitness level.

I'm also pretty happy to have split the first half only 2 minutes slower than what I did 15 months ago, and then ran a back-back half barely 15 seconds over 2 hrs on top of that. I've come a long way

not a bad result imo for averaging 20mpw all year /few long runs
*of course, I thought I could break 4H in spite of all that, and I guess I got awfully close. I'm sorta wondering if I hadnt just 'legged out' some of the flat/crowded sections a bit better if I wouldnt have gone under 4H though. I had to play a bit of frogger in a lot of sections and when stuck behind people running 9:00/mi or slower in flat ground I just said 'fuck it' and followed, figuring I'd 'save it' for later

side note: I am now a clif blox afficionada I believe. pounded [4] complete clif blox bars, 1 per mile so miles 1-24 lol. In training this rate of consumption was making me sick but I toughed it out haha. Only had to skip 1 or 2 miles of consumption of these for feeling queasy but I made up for it lol. Skipped the final [3] water stations [sub 30 minutes to go/figured no point] and finished super dehydrated lol. Probably drank a gallon or so at the finish.

race morning i ate 1 cliff bar protein thing [the 20g protein bar], one starbucks black coffee to get the pre-race poop going [worked!], and took a starbucks protein coffee [20 more grams!] with me to the starting line. Figured a little protein in the system could only help. Yay for race-day experiments lol

Made (zero) bathroom stops, and never felt like I had to pee. I was dehydrating the fuck out of myself apparently [heavy sweater lol], I walked through every water station, drank the nuun electrolyte drink, half the water cup and poured the other half on my head was my 'style'.

I believe I need to drink more than this actually. Some of these water cups couldnt have had more than 3 oz or so in them, they were like 1/3 full. Since I was going slow I even had to pour water for myself once or twice lol [everything wiped out by the 1500 ish full marathoners and 2500 first half marathoners that started in front of me that were going faster than 9:00/]

I get more pleasure triggering you with my FTP #'s or guesstimates regarding what cat cycler I rate as, tbh

standing up today is about as much as I can handle lol

thanks for the kudos everyone, for what its worth even if you dont have a "good" to "perfect" marathon training plan it might be ok to do one anyways I guess. I figured running 20mpw for ~2 years straight now meant I had one in me, even if I basically completely blew off the long runs over 13 or so.

If you're gonna be dumb you gotta be tough tho.

I had a funny conversation with a guy that had finished a bit earlier than me. I stupidly asked him "...hey first one man?" and he said "...nah, the 12th" so I was like "...oh my bad, hah, this is my first.... btw, it gets easier right? First one is always the hardest they say?" .... <him>..."...nah it gets worse man. This might not have been the worst marathon I've ever done but it's up there. It's all bad and the more you learn how to run 'em the closer you can get to a perfectly miserable -- yet fast! -- marathon.... quite possibly if you keep doing marathons this will be the easiest you'll ever run if you continue to try and go faster and faster with each one. It just keeps getting worse" ...

I was like... "...shit man. Getting all nihilistic on me at the finish line. I'ma get me some Vicodin and continue this conversation with a painkiller cocktail dude!"

Good job dude.

As a fellow 20-25 mph week runner+biking, I have zero urge to extend any of that, especially if adding a lot of vertical.

I used to think so too, and I'm well into the suck, and I was open to the possibility of this scaring me off from ever doing one again [26.2] but now I'm wondering if I can pull off a BQ on/about my 45th birthday [3:21/22 estimated cutoff], so... find a flat-ish course.... pull out 40 minutes.... I think I can do it

hoping to test the first requirement of that early Oct [do a half sub 1:40], realistically I probably need to get closer to 1:31-ish half speed to make a go at a BQ so this is gonna be a while.

I'm assuming I need a bit more mileage, more hills, longer long runs, you know, the stuff I was supposed to do for the first one

But I'm conflicted as I just actually want to have a "fast" 5K [<20:00], but I think a BQ would just be a little incremental work on top of that [sorta]. At least I think those efforts are at least mostly complementary

A guy I work with is a pretty dedicated tri-athelete (wins his age group in amateur events) and he runs a 3:2X marathon IIRC.

Running an 8 minute mile for 3-1/2 hours straight is impressive. I still keep up the weightlifting life, so jack of all trades, master of none.
