I read this book a couple years ago, it's a good read and really resonated with me.

http://www.amazon.com/Photographs-Not-Taken-Will-Steacy/dp/0983231613

Well last night I had my own experience. Last night I was soaking in a hot tub at the hotel I stay at when I'm in Denali for work and as usual there were a few light green bands of the northern lights out. Then they got big for about an hour between 12 and 1, and right around 1230 they cranked up and went crazy. Pinks and purples and white and green. There was this amazing color burst that looked like a cloud of fairies swirling around that lasted 5 seconds tops, the whole big color show maybe 5 minutes.

My camera? 300 yards away in its case, plus I'm in a hot tub. Tripod? Back in Fairbanks. Sometimes you just get to enjoy the moment.

Any one got stories to share about missed opportunities?

I see shots I don't take every day. Which isn't a brag exactly, I'm just constantly looking. I think its a healthy practice to commit to, though not as healthy as taking a camera with you everywhere.

I have a few, such as this past 4th of July. Clear skies, on the water, fireworks and the city of Seattle from afar. I didn't have my camera with me and I'm glad I didn't. I was able to enjoy it a lot more.
Enjoying myself in the moment or experience is often more important than getting the shot. When I shoot, I go out with a purpose to do so.

I think everyone has times where they're pissed they don't have their camera. I know I have one many occasions. I keep telling myself I need to keep it in the car, lol.

One of my biggest regrets is not taking pics of the polar bear I encountered while on a fishing trip (It was about 30ft away)

Which is smarter than me. If I saw a polar bear while shooting, I might be too focused on the shot and not enough on safety...

Sure, he's an herbivore, but it was during the rut.

I grabbed the gun instead of the camera, he wasn't very phased by the 3 shoots I fired, lol.

Sometimes I'm glad I leave the camera at home. I think I miss out on a lot being behind the lens, its almost liberating sometimes not worrying about getting "THE" shot. On the flip side, there's a ton of things i've seen just because I was there for the express purpose of photographing it, that I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise.

This one time I was in Strone, Scotland along the shores of lake and I really wish I had my camera when I saw this strange long headed fish swimming by.

The only other time I can think of was while visiting Dartmouth Nova Scotia I was out helping a friend collect maple syrup and we saw this majestic hairy creature that was harvesting berries and the syrup from our buckets. Totally intense.

Guilty as well...

There were at least 2 bulls in the brush to my left who were about 25-50 yards from the side of the road. Taken last weekend, so middle of the rut too. Just a little too close...

Brown bear? I'm staying in my fucking car.

I used to carry my Sony NEX-3 with 18-55mm and 55-210mm lenses with me in the car everywhere. It probably sounds crazy, but I had a little electronic safe in the back of the cube. I drilled two holes in the back of the safe and looped a steel cable under the back seat and back into the safe. It surely made me feel better when using valet parking, leaving the car with the dealer or car wash.

Crappy cell phone picture...

That is what I was thinking. However, the heat never has hurt my dash cameras. Cops have had dash cameras forever too.
