There is someone selling one of these locally for 525 dollars. it gets good reviews and normally sells for 1200 dollars. Any input about this lens? it seems like a killer deal to me.

Here are a few pics that the seller sent me.

Do used prices elsewhere line up with what you're seeing locally? If it's a steal grab it.. Even if you don't like it resell it for a profit.

I have an older version of that lens (it's the one with the crinkle finish), and I find it to be very sharp. I'm always impressed when I review images from it. IS would be nice though.

It's such a fundamental focal length that if it's at all ok, jump on it.

I have the previous non-OS version and it is still selling used for about $600. At $525 for the OS version, i'd be a little concerned with something. Definitely check it out and put it through its paces before buying.

Im going to meet the guy at the end of the month and check out the lens. What should I check for? What on the spot tests can I run it through?

Check the glass elements for any mold/oil spots, make sure the AF works, check the AF/MF clutch, overall cleanliness of lens, zoom in/out.

I'd also take a few photos at 70, 120, 160, 200 and see if the focus is spot on (not like it can't be micro-adjusted). If you focus on something and it is off quite a bit, that can be a sign of a problem. Make sure the OS works as intended too.

Not sure what you have there, but you should also try looking up the serial to make sure it isn't stolen.

Picked it up today and also got a 1.4x extender from the guy for $620 total. Everything looked and works great.

I've rented the Nikon equivalent twice. I've yet to find a more "me" lens (well, except for big wildlife where it isn't long enough), but I just can't justify the cash hit yet.

You would be really, really excited to save up another $600 and get the Nikon VR1. It's a beautiful lens that's built awesome and there's nothing to be disappointed by in it.

Just kidding you got the Sigma yayyyyy
