Most interested in something that can fool me into thinking I'm in a race? Smartphone integration? Screencast to a monitor? On my left, bro?

I'm noticing I'm not getting anywhere near the road miles in I'd like to (long term average last couple years is 50/week), I think the only way to improve given my daylight free time is a trainer sadly.

A power meter would be nice, too

So just do intervals with RAD on a bigscreen in front of you? How does it set the resistance?

Check craigslist, there's always plenty of people selling magnetic trainers & occasionally rollers in my area for 1/2 retail price barely used.

I brought it up in the cycle racing thread, but http://www.zwift.com/ is kinda fun. Requires an ant+ USB stick in your computer, a compatible trainer, and a cadence/speed sensor on your bike though. If you've got all that it's kinda neat to play around with, and is more distracting/interesting to me than watching tv or something random.

I've used mag trainers and the old clutch style one up, neither compare to the kurt kinetic.

Kurt kinetic + trainerroad.com is in my opinion the best way to do indoor training. Thousands of scalable workouts, power meter, integrates with all the popular training videos like carmichael, sufferfest, spinervals, etc.

https://www.trainerroad.com/career/robbbby

I find I get a better workout on the trainer than outdoors. Outdoors i'll coast a lot more or not push since I have nothing telling me "5 more seconds". With trainerroad everything is on screen and you never want to pussy out before the interval ends. Best $90 a year IMO.

kurt kinetic + sufferfest + trainer road is even better. Just sufferfest alone you have nothing to gauge effort other than how much you hurt. Trainerroad at least gives you visual power goals you have to maintain through the video.

edit - the music in the sufferfest videos sucks absolute balls though

haha i wouldn't mind the music so much if it synced with the cadence they wanted.

you can power train with sufferfest but they may only discuss that in the training programs. the 7/10 8/10 stuff actually has numerical meaning there.

What do you do on rain days? It rained here pretty much all day fri/sat/sun/today, no way am I riding in the rain but there's also no way i'm going a whole 4 days without riding. Trainer is perfect for that in the summer.

I'm guessing you just ride through thunderstorms since you're crazy like that.

btw thanks for the many fine responses guys, I'm just trying to decide whether or not I *really* want to buy a trainer (leaning yes)

arguments for:

daylight hours I'm in my cube or if it's a weekend I'd rather be at the beach 10/10 times--this isn't going to change.

I bike commute--yay. But it's not a great workout more like for overall fitness. Watching some peers develop/surpass my bike fitness has me wondering what else I can do to keep up.. also am bike commuting only 2-3 days/week avg with updated job commitments [yes I have an on-site shower]

running is my biggest weakness and I don't mind going out for a jog in the dark in the eves but I do mind going for a bike ride in the dark--I only do it bike commuting in the winter coming home really. My long term average is ~20 miles/week and I plan on pushing this to around ~30/week as I prepare for my first marathon this year. This is squeezing out daylight bike time big time.

so most of those lead me to a trainer being a useful 1-2/day a week thing maybe doing 30-mins of intervals or related to stealthily (sp?) catch-up on the bike leg with my peers

I'm also going to get a power meter hub for my bike I guess at the same time mostly because I like data. I know I'm not fast but I like looking at #'s. What that 125 watts do?

In for later as all of this interests me.

Reason #1 for considering a trainer (and god forbid a treadmill)
Parent, means being a way from house for more than 30 minutes can be a challenge.
Not that I'd be happy about interruptions at home, but they're managable.

Also sub hour rides/runs don't really take me anywhere interesting. Like if I want to enjoy my routine I'm facing a 30 minute drive each way. rather than complete the 800th loop of the neighborhood(which I also walk) I might as well just rock teh garage.

no real reason not to get one, man. it's a great way to complement all of your other training and they're not expensive. i had/have a similar situation to dirty. sometimes i just don't want to drive/ride 30 extra minutes each way to get to the good riding area, fight cagers for lane usage, put on sunscreen, etc... if you have a ton of awesome riding in your 'hood that doesn't require any of the headache, then yeah...ymmv. the after dark riding is always a factor, tho.

it's nice to just be able to load the bike in and get an hr of good work in and be done. sometimes i don't get on the trainer until 11pm during the week...you don't have to plan your whole afternoon/evening around a 2hr weekday bike ride.

Why bother spending the cash on a power meter hub? All the options here give you virtual power which has proven to be accurate within 1-2%, at least it is with the KK trainer. As long as the power readings are repeatable and don't vary from workout to workout you're just wasting money for what you do. Spend the money you would spend on a hub + lacing and buy your trainer, ant+ gear and a subscription to one of the training services and you will still have money left over.

I like to analyze races post-race for data like this, also on a long-real training ride. Did I mention I like data?

At some point I can probably target a power/HR threshold and figure out how hard I can get away with hammering the bike leg to still have a legit [for me] run after and all that.

I hear what you're saying tho. In truth I'm just looking at another toy basically. I'm ok with there being cheaper/easier ways to get the same result [more or less--like stravas power estimates] while spending less.

I figure on a trainer I'd always be on the power hub wheel also. I'm only looking at spending 5-600 on a used powertap SL+ wireless wheel on CL

This is just to complement a trainer

example:
$500 if you just want the rear wheel [duh]
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/5045097848.html

further up the price chain..

Ah, I misunderstood, I thought you wanted power readings to make the trainer more desirable. Ignore my comments if it's for outdoor use as well, I can totally get with that and would also love something for outdoors as well. For me though, i'm not rebuilding a wheel when I already have a real nice wheelset and not ditching my perfectly good carbon crankset just for the sake of power readings. Garmin vector pedals seem to be the easiest option, but they only make them in a road pedal and $1500 lol.

my zipp 404/188 hub wheel is definitely my fastest wheel and I dont want to be in the position of trying to race on a wheel that is slower just for power readings [although I guess if I disc cover them both very little fucking difference assuming the hub is working correctly]

How do the options you are considering work with regards to data output? Do they display it in real time on some sort of HUD or does it just capture the data and you need to pull it off after. IMO power readings are useless for training if you can't see them in real time.

yea my suunto ambit 2s watch is mounted to an aerobar and I stare at it like 6" from my face the whole time for realtime stats--or I flip it around and leave it on my wrist. Right now I'm leaning towards leaving it on my wrist since this watch is new I'll leave the backup GPS watch on the bike maybe just leave it on mph/distance data and try to have power/HR on the watch or something.

right now I only see mph and HR data and distance travelled/ET/etc. It was cool last time targeting an uber-slow/zone 3 HR with a rough mph goal [21-22 on flats, 18-ish on hills, not a hilly course]

I always fuck something up in transition tho eg, trying to swim with the HR strap on leads to comedy w/o a wetsuit, comedy w/a wetsuit, etc

the fuckin thing never seems to sync in moments of great urgency so I'm a solid 5 miles down the road before it starts tracking me it seems..

hopefully that will change with this watch which would be tracking from the swim start instead of sitting in sleep mode on my bike

Update: found a local CL seller with a powertap g3 in a flo-30 rear for $500

I figure that and some mag trainer and I'm good. Look out 175 watts and 20.0 mph \:D

Hopefully this will be my race wheel with a disc cover for a while, hoping it rolls as good as the zipp 188 hub I've got which is ridiculous
