danke, the official usually posts a spreadsheet with our lap times/avg speeds

was pretty happy to just be in the top 5 of the entire class too (we do 19-29/30-39/40-49/50-59/60+

now to the next one

some extremely technical, lots of climbing, exposed hell hole.

2/1s do the part you see (which is the shitty hard part) and we do the loop that is just before Mt Scott in the background.

it.. will.. hurt

well, got to ride the race loop this weekend..
the first 4 miles

suddenly the Enduro seems like a great choice in bike - basically a 4 mile rock garden with some drops that scare you shitless, slick rock, more rocks and climbing

horrible day - hardest fucking thing I've done in a long time. Ate shit pretty good in a descending rock garden at pretty decent speed. Nice laceration across chest and a stick about went through the throat, trashed jersey, keep thinking I was seeing the guy ahead of me (3rd/4th person) but they were just the fn course marshals in the exact same color shirts

oh also trashed my 30/32 chain rings and had to use a 34t - FUCKING SUCKED SO MUCH ASS IN TECHNICAL CLIMBING HOLY FUCK

great for a fun ride - horriBAD for a race

https://www.strava.com/activities/284402816

ended up 5th - the wreck cost me 3min or a lot more since I did the last 8 only 1:50min behind 1st.... who finished 7mins ahead of second... derp.....Don't know how much ground I made up, but I was emptying the tank the last 8mi (nothing remotely as tech as first 4.5) and it took me a while to recoup from spill because DNF started sounding like a great idea.

More MTB-related misery for you.

It seems like suffering is a great motivator for you. Maybe you should start training for next year's Paris-Roubaix.

when I OTB'd a branch pierced jersey around bottom of right ribcage - exited jersey around left collarbone and snagged my neck a little on the way

needless to say it took a little while to get myself going again

ah retribution for last week's slaughterfest

first podium as a Cat2 - 2nd. Actually our entire team swept the podium so.. GREAT day. Had another buddy get his first win in 3's. We were wondering if we should text his girlfriend to go get some Aleve for herself, because she is going to be sore in the AM

Nice, grats.

Race this weekend ended with a short hill (.5mi) followed by the descent into an uphill finish. Pack stayed together thanks to a dumbass team that pushed the field the whole race and had nothing left at the end. Why? Anyway. I tried to make a move at the bottom of that hill, got some separation. It pays to be a tiny rider sometimes. Got caught by the chase on the uphill coming into the finish. My biggest gear is a 50x12... not enough to keep distance on the descent. I spun out, set a new max HR... but couldnt make enough speed. Oh well.

Teammate got 3rd after I strung out the field. Had a few teammates podium in their brackets at battenkill so thats good.

nice work shamrok!
also nice job as well volty!

had my first expert xc race of the year this weekend at Patapsco State Park in MD. Last year it was my first expert race and i got 14th so this year my goal was top 10. I wasnt agressive enough last year on the start which is about .25 mile road to the trail straight into a cat4 climb. this year i was aggressive at the start was sitting second wheel on the road let a few guys by going into the trail since i dont really like to be at the very front. climb was actually pretty controlled i thought and i crested the hill in 7th only 5 seconds behind the leader. I tailed them for a bit but slowly lost ground on the climbs due to not much mtb seat time. so i kinda bled some spots on lap 2 but was still riding well and not making mistakes. I ended up coming in 12th in a pretty stacked field. spots 1-6 were all previous winners of the race and 3rd was a legit pro rider turned coach, so im pretty pleased with how it went for the first race effort of the year.lap times were pretty good too, got 7th on strava for the race lap. race time was 2hours 2min, 22.3 miles, 3100ft climb, 183avg hr/197max

raced the first race of the mid atlantic super series today. did pro open class with 30 some starters...had a weak start but clawed back some positions, felt pretty good the whole race, came down to a sprint at the end which i lost by .001 seconds for 8th, ended up 9th in a stacked field. only 5 min back from winner after 22 miles of racing. was a fast course. 22.6 miles, 2200ft climb 1:39.559, 13.7mph avg, 181hr avg/193 max

Do you always race with a camelbak?

I'd think between not fumbling with a bottle and not having the bottle nozzle get covered in muck, the Camelbak would make a lot of sense.

I don't agree with the fumbling bit. Guys who ride and race a lot can pull the bottle in and out of the cage without even thinking about it or slowing their cadence. A camelbak is uncomfortable, extra weight on your back, the hose hangs down flopping around which is annoying, it's sweaty and just feels awful overall. This is of course my opinion, I personally could never wear one and even hate wearing one on long recreational trail rides.
The only reason I asked anyways is because nato posts a lot of pictures of him racing and this was the first time I ever noticed.

yeah i always race with one. i have a 40oz one that i use for xc. Its super small, dont feel the weight, theres a clip that holds the hose in place and it rides high on your back so it doesnt really cause you to sweat more. Its nice to be able to grab a drink during a long rocky climb or descent instead of waiting for a smooth part of the trail. plus with the way the ellsworth frame is made and the shock locaton, you cant get a bottle on the inside of the frame. Id have to put it on the underside of the downtube.

for my uci races im either going to use the cage on the downtube, a rear TT holder on the seat post or grab a bottle in the feed zone, sip, toss, and repeat every lap since laps are only 4ish miles

actually i lied, you can fit a 16oz bottle on the inside of the frame if you use a side mount cage...but its irrelevant for me as there are no bosses to mount a cage on the inside of the frame anyways, they are on the bottom of the downtube and i have a downtube protector over them

I always say I'd use a pack again for XC, but having it move around throws me off when the slow/rocky stuff starts up. Now for marathon stuff, yeah I'm using a camelbak - already did the bottle in frame and bottle in back pocket, twas hell.

Although, I will probably regret no camelbak this weekend - 3 laps of rock and hell.

I never raced, but I've done enough bouts in the woods over the past 20+ years to have the preference for the Camelbak. The extra heft doesn't bother me and it gets lighter as I get more tired, so it works for me.

why try to be good at just one thing haha. Better to fail spectacularly/be mediocre at everything imo

Two races this past weekend. 1st was a crit. 30 mins. Lots of sketchy riders. I hate the 5s. Nobody can turn for shit. Squealing brakes until a couple of break attempts sped the field enough to drop some people. Breaks came back, decent position, top 6 finish. I'll take it.

Next day was a road race, hilly but not crazy. 3 loops, 14mi course (Bear Mtn in ny). First lap felt great. Legs took a while to warm from the race the day before, but I had no problem hanging with the leaders. First lap dropped 2/3 of the field. 2nd lap, front derailleur decided it didnt want to shift to the small ring, I got dropped by the field while trying to shift. Hammered up the main climb, caught the 2nd group on the road after the front group exploded. 12-13 at the front, then 10 of us chasing. We never managed to reel them in, I started cramping with 1-2 miles left, and said fuck it and dropped my efforts. Frustrating when mechanicals happen. Wouldnt have won (not with the cramps) but should've had a better result.

nice job in the crit though! had a dissapointing weekend myself. 2nd pro open race in the MASS Series... had another good ride going in 10th place for 2.5 laps and suddenly i hit a wall and made some dumb mistakes, got a wheel twisted twice and twisted my bars, then i flatted a tubeless tire 1/4 mile from the finish and somehow my rotor got bent/warped and it was rubbing most of the race, bad enough that if you spun the wheel it would spin about 3 times before stopping. still ended up 17th/26 but pissed i lost 7 spots in half a lap. course was super rocky which isnt my thing anyways. at least i got some cool pics \:D

onto national qualifer this weekend

another bad race. mechanical issues right from the start. chain keeps sliding off the bottom pulley on rear derailleur and getting wedged in between the pulley and the hanger cage thing. can still ride it but between the drag and the noise its not really feasible. so my race was over 200 yds in. I trudged my way around slowly and kept stopping to put my chain back on the pulley and finished all 4 laps in 2hr 15 min, dead last. but due to 6 DNF's and a DQ, i was 10th in the class and won 65 bucks. thats why you always finish!
