Need some feedback on tires.

Currently have stock tires since purchasing my car almost 5yrs ago. They're not totally bald but I'd say there's about 1/16" to 1/8" of rubber before it meets the wear bars. Also the outside shoulder is a bit rough looking. Is it time to get new tires?

The size currently is 235/45zr18 94w.

Got a quote from Simply Tire for the following:
215-45-18
Nexen CP672 93H $520.00
Hankook Ventus V2 Concept2 93H $600.00
Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport 93W XL $640.00
General G-Max AS-03 93W XL $640.00
Kumho Ecsta 4X KU22 93W XL $640.00
Falken ZE950 93W $650.00
Falken FK453 93Y $660.00
Yokohama Avid Envigor 89W $680.00
Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 93V $700.00
Continental Extreme Contact DWS 93Y XL $740.00
Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 93Y $760.00
Pirelli P-Zero All Season Plus 93W XL $780.00
Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 93Y XL $800

Wondering why he would offer a size narrower? Does it make a difference in terms of performance, etc.?

What tire would you choose?

tia

First things first, why is he offering you a tire that is narrower? There is a difference of -2.8% dropping down to a 215 width. I would stick with the 235 and get prices on those.

I assume by the size it is a relatively sporty car?

As for those tires listed:

The Nexen is a very popular tire on Korean cars. Our Velosters come with them factory. Not a bad tire, but I would only get it if I were on a very tight budget. Not a horrible tire, just not great.

Both Hankooks are great tires, the V12 being more of a sportier tire.

The Generals are a great tire for the money as well. They are owned by Continental and their quality has increased a lot over the last few years.

Stay away from the Bridgestones. I've experienced nothing but issues with them, much better tires for the money out there.

The Yokos are a nice tire as well. Installed 2 sets of them today.

Can never go wrong with Pilots.

The Kumhos are a good tire as well. I had them on my Civic and loved them.

The Falkens are a good tire from what I've read. I was told that they tend to wear a little quickly though. Thinking of getting a set of the 453s possibly.

I would get pricing on the proper size tires, don't go with the 215s, they're too narrow.

also call tires23 for a price, probably cheaper and stick with the 235 size
Are you looking for a summer tire or all season?
Check tirerack.com read the reviews and take your pick. I had the V12 EVOs and they where pretty good for the price. Had Continental DW and they where really good (different than the DWS though)
Also had these on the wifes car and where excellent

LOL @ narrower tires.

but I think the RE760's are the best bang for buck.

Not sure why he quoted that tire size. I just gave him car make model year so he probably just did a quick google and found that size

Not sure if you consider a mazda 6 gt sporty but that's what came on the car.

Summer or all season. Doesn't matter since I have dedicated winters but would like to get the best bang for the buck without going bankrupt.

With the info I described in the first post, do you guys think I need new rubber or can I get away with it for another season? If not, I think I'm leaning towards the General AS-03's or the Hancook Ventura v2 concept 2.

The SPT's were ok, but got real loud as they wore down. I have PS2 and PSS now, great tire for the money for overall performance. They are quiet and ride comfortably since the sidewalls are 'soft'.

This.
RE760s are solid performers, and can even be track worthy.
They are a very consistent tire with good on center feel for a tire in that price range. It's probably the tire with the firmest sidewall in your entire list.

I would also consider Sumitomo HTRZ3's if on a budget for summers. Sumitomo is a division of Yokohama, and the HTRZ3 has won many comparison tests for a UHP.

Oh and yes, you should replace your tires.

nexen - dont bother
hankooks - decent tire for the money, they've come a long way, impressed.
bridgestone - always a fav but like mentioned above some of their 'mid-tier' tires have not been as good lately, still great tires tho (usually they're higher end summer stuff tho)
general - not bad again for the money but not a first choice (i forget who makes these behind the scenes?)
kumho - see hankook, same deal
falken, not bad tires...found them to be not so great in wet
yoko - always good middle of the road tire, cant go wrong
michelin ps as3 - very nice tire, pricey but you get what you pay for, excellent in wet
conti - also great tire but even more money ugh.
pirelli - dont even bother

overall for the coin if you can swing the contis go for it, but honestly you can just get the michelins and you'll be pleased
second choice imo woul dbe the bridgestone
then yoko
then korean makes.

as for thinner tire, he prob didn't have your exact size maybe?
but if anything you wanna look at overall diameter when choosing, ensure it's close to your OEM size.

General makes pretty good tires now.
Run these on my wife's Outback
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?...=2.5i%20Premium

And they are really good, espeically in the wet and snow

Also ran their winter tires and they are superb. Better than Michleins and Bridgestone

I'd go with the pilot sport for the money. The super sports are excellent but way expensive. The normal all season sport will be good.

Forgot to mention that the quote includes install, balance, new stems, etc.

What's the average price for that service so I can try and compare apples to apples with just tires from different stores.

You guys are making it quite obvious you like the 760s \:\)

How's the tread life on it? From reading some reviews it seems like it doesn't last more than 2 seasons.

Does the performance decline greatly when the outside temp is below 5°c since I change my tires late in the fall.

Yes, any summer tire is going to be crap around 5c temps.
If you intend to drive the car that way, go for an all season.

760s are tires with very nice characteristics for performance driving. It's like a more responsive PSS (but less grippy). As for tread life, I don't know. I change tires annually because track XD All tires last me 6 months \:\(

OP if you looking for long tread life, forget any performance summer tires. You should go with High Performance All Season tires for better tread life.

I think most summer performance tires has tread wear like 200 or something. My STi stock tires were 180 tread wear

Nah, u will find UHP summer tires in the 300+ tread wear category.
The PSS is an example of this. Summers can last a long time, but per OP's use case (driving down to near 0 temps), the a/s suggestion is warranted. A high performance a/s sounds right to me.

Thanks guys. I do like the specs/reviews/recommendations for the 760 but I can't be changing tires all the time.

As a suggested alternative an a/s might be better for my style.

Now Jeff mentioned the PS. Would this be it?

If so, and I'm not sure how much weight I'd put in to the comments in the vid but it seems like a good performer.

Unless you are driving like Mario Andretti on the streets, who cares? Honestly, even the most basic shit tire will do fine for 90% of the people...just look at the tires that come on econo cars like hyundai/kia. Basically every tire on the list outperforms OEM shit...

You'll be good with either - picking the cheaper one between the 2 will probably get you the same experience but save you some money in your pocket.

If the guys here say the 760 is the one I would trust it.

Rate my tire choice... it's narrowed down to 4. (List compiled based on Screamin's brand feedback above, and TireRack survey results, which are all similar to the BFGs)

185/65/R15... I have separate Michelin Xi3 winters...

1) BFG Advantage T/A @ $115/tire, $590 tax+install - $50 MIR
2) Yoko Avid Ascend 86T @ $112.5/tire, $580 tax+install - $50 MIR?
3) Falken ZE950 AS 88H @ $87.5/tire, $460 tax+install, no MIR
4) Kumho Solus KR21 @ ??/tire. - $32 MIR for the set. ** Guessing the cheapest of all 4. (TireRack is $60/tire, compared to BFG's $72 Yoko $80)

Currently rocking the BFGs... They seem fine They slip from a start if it's wet outside, but pretty much all 4 tires listed have decent treadlife, and have similar survey results from TireRack.com ...

Price is a factor as the EL's nearing end of life...

Leaning towards the Yokos or Kumhos ... BFG's I've already tried...

If you email Allen @ Simply Tire his prices are usually cheaper than what's advertised on his site.

I'm still waiting for the Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3 tires as it seems they're sold out everywhere \:\( Could go with the Conti Extreme DWS but that's a little too much $$.
