There are so many factors that impact weight; sub-200 is a good starting point IMHO. Once you're there you'll know whether you want to be under 189 or if you're happy at that range.
IMO it's more about BP, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.

I am roughly your age (a couple of years older) and 5'11". I was 185 at my heaviest/unhealthiest and I'm 175 when fit and actively working out / eating right.
my breakfast before was either nothing --- or a bacon egg and cheese from dunkins... or an egg mcmuffin and hash brown from mcdonalds.
coffee with cream.
or a bagel with cream cheese.
NOW: cereal with some 1% milk - (wheaties or special K) or a crunchy granola bar.
seems to be working --- hunger isnt a real issue.
I have been counting my calories for a week now -- and have been doing good with 1650 calories per day. Havent gone over yet - (this # was set to me by the app"my fitness tracker") -
I am currently at 211.8 lbs - down from 215 a week ago.
It honestly hasnt been that hard -- I still feel like i eat enough - and not hungry. Just got rid of all the junk food - and extra beers during the week.
I still drank 3 beers on saturday and sunday though --- at 150 calories each.
Its only been a week -- but have to start somewhere. I know I need to now start stepping up the exercise part of this plan.... to see more results.
I know I have a long way to go! 3 lbs gone but another 20-25 to go.
Nice job. It's good to have long-term goals but maybe more important are the small, short-term ones that add up to that big goal. Can't lose 25 without first losing 1, then 3,...... Keep it up!
I agree his intake is a little low for the weight. But if he's feeling full I think he's OK. Especially since he hasn't really worked in a rigorous exercise program yet.
That said, don't give it up all at once lol. Maybe allow for a few of the foods you love.

I think beer is simultaneously the easiest [and hardest] item to give up in order to cut weight. Such a dilemma. Giving it up entirely could possibly accidentally the whole thing/de-railment

my concern is once you hit a weight plateau you'll be cutting off of 1650...
i'd say add a few hundred cals to your diet now, and you'll still be able to drop fat... then later you won't be looking down the barrel of 1300 calories...

noted.
I think once i actually get my fat ass in gear -- such as tonight - playing racquetball for an hour or 40 min etc... it will be easier to eat a little more - and still feel good about it.
I have that elliptical downstairs that I haven't really taken advantage of yet.
needed/need to lose 15-ish right now for mtb'ing 6'2" 210
I gave up alcohol completely recently, but then my sweet tooth went into absolute batshit insane mode.
I think I am just going back to booze, I rarely drank anyway unless special occasion..
