Since we have a 2015 goal thread I thought we should have a 2014 recap thread. I can't find a 2014 goal thread to revive, so making a new one.

I ended the year setting new PR's in:
5K 27:43 - 21:09
Half-Marathon 1:50:04 - 1:40:01
Marathon 4:49:36 - 4:20:40

I ran a total of 13 races consisting of 2 5k's, 1 4miler, 1 8k, 1 15k, 1 10miler, 6 13.1, 1 26.2.

I ran a total of 1409.28 miles, my highest ever. I ran over 200 miles in November alone, again my highest amount. I also biked 916.73 miles (actually did some biking without my Garmin, so did more).

Comparing to my original 2014 goals I wanted to run 800 miles (hit 1400) and set a new PR in the 5k, HM and Marathon, which I accomplished. I wanted to buy a bike and start riding with doing 250 miles, almost did 4 times that amount. I never tried swimming and doing a Tri, so I might do that this year. Really happy with how my year turned out and looking forward to this year!

I should add that one of my 2015 goals will be to get better at tracking. Miles, efforts, calories, measurements, etc.

2014:
-Joined a gym and started lifting for the first time ever.
-Lost only 9lbs, but gained muscle, lost body fat and inches.
-Shaved over an hour off of my Almanzo 100 time from 2013. (~108 miles/8000' gravel bike race)
-Did the Seattle to Portland bike ride, 204 miles/2 days. 2nd day was my fastest century ever.
-Improved quite a bit on the mountain bike. Confidence and speed.
-Improved mental health.
-Finally have a good diet plan (started early December) that I feel I can stick with.

Feeling really good to start off 2015, ready to continue busting my ass to make some serious improvements to my health and fitness.

Nice job guys!! My year was pretty epic.

Total run mileage: 2,363
Total vertical: 240,000+ feet

I ran:
One marathon (Boston qualifier 3:08)
Three 50k's
Two 50 milers (one of which was also my first at the distance)
One 100 miler (my first)

I managed to train smart and and never had a bad race. I stayed 100% healthy all the while training harder than I ever have in my life. I even had a 320 mile month!

That's my season in a nutshell. Managed to run a 25 miler in April and a 50 miler in June before falling off a cliff. High hopes for 2015 though.

I first got bitten by the bug to run a 100 mile trail race back in January 2011 and now four years later I've signed up for three and only made it to the start line healthy for one. My big goal in 2015 is to show up in September healthy and ready to give it a solid effort. Even if I blow up and wind up puking in the woods and not finishing it's gotta be sitting around watching another race start without me.

EDIT: and lest you think my season was a total waste:

infinite% increase over previous years. not bad.

I finally figured out a program that strikes the right balance of volume and frequency that doesn't interfere with me playing soccer so much.

So, that was awesome.

I did alright, started out 2014 at 206 lbs and was 187 lbs this morning, so down 19 lbs. According to the Withings scale, my muscle mass stayed at 152lbs and fat mass dropped by that 19 lbs.

Intermediate All Pro version 1. The way it's written is super shitty. The first three big lifts are

1st of the week: 25% of 5RM x 10 reps, 50% x 10, 100% x 5, 75% x 10
2nd of the week: 25% x 10, 50% x 10, 100% x 5 x 3

Accessory lifts:

1st of week: 100% x 8, 50% x 20
2nd of week: 100% x 12, 50% x 20

So, I do big three of Front Squat, Bench and Weighted Pull-Ups. Accessory is Overhead Press, Wide Grip Cable Row, Incline Bench, Bulgarian Split Squat, DB Curls.

I just lift twice a week. If I decide to go crazy and do a third non-soccer workout, I'll start off with some plyo stuff, like Box Jumps (5 sets of 6), cable crunches, Landmines, and Weighted Side lunges. But my soccer performance has vastly improved since I stopped lifting before I play. Shocker. But it's working out better for strength gains and soccer endurance by not doing too much in one day. It was just overkill. Soccer was blunting strength gains, and the lifting was blunting soccer endurance (when the activities were done consecutively).

interesting turn, 184lbs was the lowest I was all year. Could've kept it rolling but I knew I'd get diminishing returns in the strength department. I'm not going to say 2015 is going to be a comeback year by any means. When I can bench 3 plates for 3 sets of 10, I'll cut otherwise I'll be sitting at 205-220 for however long I need to.

Began training for my second marathon and was doing alright until the long runs got up over 15 miles. It just doesn't agree with my knees and the joint soreness from those runs would stick around long enough to interfere with the next training run. Then I left my job to start my own business and my training went further down the tubes. So the late year training for my marathon (which takes place in nine days) was pretty crappy but I'll survive.

I did learn that I enjoy speed work and have the capacity to improve my half-marathon and shorter distances with the right training. I'm going to work on those next year. Otherwise, killing half a Saturday or Sunday running for three hours plus until everything hurts just isn't my cup of tea.

2014 was pretty epic for me.

- First and second marathon ever, 8 weeks apart; 4:38xx and 4:10:xx respectively.
- First triathlon. Although participating with a severely bruised rib cage, I managed not to finish last. \:D
- Two half marathons; 1:52:20 and 1:52:40.
- Numerous shorter races, including four 10 milers, with the most recent being a PR of 80:44.

Finished a bunch of sprint tris and started sneaking into the top third of my age group
Still fat but got a little leaner

Cross post from the cycling thread:

3404 was on the bike, the rest was running.

I got myself down to 178 over the summer--a weight I haven't been since the mid-90's. Gained 10 lbs since Halloween from all of the sugar/white flour that comes with that season. Now I'll get back on track.

Lifting heavy shouldn't, but lifting at all should.

Ran just under 400 miles, mostly because injury kept me down.
Sucked at weights
I was round about a PR on 5k, and a 10km.

and I completely fell off the wagon by year end.

Here's hoping '15 goes better.

if you ain't making progression in your lifts, you ain't growing...

if you're cool with that, that's fine, but some people actually want to get stronger...

Bone density maintenance, muscle mass maintenance, general mobility reasons . . . all things that help you as you age.

but doesn't there come a point of diminishing gains?

benching 400 lbs will help you live a healthier longer life than someone that can bench 300?

not necessarily but the 400lb bencher will likely be stronger and have better bone denisty / musculature than the 300lb bencher over the long haul, so it stands to reason it might prolong life...?

everything else being equal (diet, no alcholol or drug abuse)...? possibly...

point is you atrophy over time, if you start at a better condition it stands to reason you'll carry more muscle mass longer...

I see old people who can barely fucking walk, probably lived life to the fullest even though now they look like a human question mark.

And then I see this.

dual hip replacement, worlds strongest pound for pound powerlifter and in his mid fifties.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lGSuoIJOiY

squatting shy of 700lbs in knee sleeves. that add like 0 support to that particular joint.

The thing is, I have two grandparents that lived to be 100 and 101 year old in the mountains in jamaica, they were active into their old age. They weren't rocking back and forth in a chair or bed ridden for months, they were out walking around and still mentally fit until they passed away.

Now I know for a fact they never lifted weights, drank protein or probably ever even heard of a gym before. So now do you correlate bodybuilding to exceptional health?

genetics play a large roll in the length of time you will live...

So you're going to make your argument off of 2 people...? I'm not going to argue with you that resistance training will lead to a longer more productive life... there are so many health markers that improve from doing so...

If you don't want to be a weight trainer, who gives a fuck... I ain't mad at ya...

Well we're in the fitness forum talking about a recap of 2014 and not the Caribbean forum in the how to live with logentivity past 2015 thread.

So with that said I'm not sure what your point is anymore other than to create a discussion that has nothing to do with this topic or forum any longer other than to entertain you at work.

So good day!

Why do you think there are people in here running 100 miles?

Most of us get into a niche because we enjoy it; and continue with it to make incremental improvements. Whether or not there's a diminishing benefit is irrelevant; the motivation to improve will always outweigh the inherent "need" to be active.
