The day is here, who do you think will take it? Will they just skirt by with the majority or will it be by a big margin?

Yep, Ford/Chow have no chance.

So... Because DoFo is running for mayor, does that mean that if he loses, he will *NOT* have a seat anywhere with council? (i.e. you can't run for a ward + mayoral seat at the same time) As would Tory and Chow?

Tory should take it. Chow I don't think has a chance at all. Apart from the downtown core, she has little support from the suburbs. Doug is going to need some luck to win it but i don't think it's completely impossible.

However, it's a nice day, old people probably don't mind getting off their rocking chair to mark a ballot for a wealthy, clean-cut, smooth-talking, middle-of-the-road while male.

I heard on the radio DoFo is spending $500k of his OWN MONEY, which brings his overall campaign donations to $850k...

That's fucking intense. I thought there were caps on how much money a single individual/group can donate for political reasons?

The $850k is nowhere near what the others raised... Chow did $1.7M total.

 Quote:
The average donor contributed $256.95, the Chow campaign said. Under Ontario election finance law, the maximum donation to a mayoral campaign is $2,500.

Chow: http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/20..._donations.html

Tory: http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/to..._big_names.html

DoFo: http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/to...sed_300000.html

Ah, here we go...

 Quote:
Mayoral campaigns are allowed to spend approximately $1.3 million before election day. A candidate and his or her spouse could conceivably cover the entire amount, though family members would be limited to contributing no more than $2,500 each.

If you want exotic, go to Peter Munk's house, he had us fly in cobblestone from England worth more than all of our lives.

tasteless or not, she is the least qualified mayoral candidate that we've seen in a while and this woman would've NEVER even had a shot at this if it wasn't for her husband...and that pisses me off because someone more worthy could've taken her spot which wouldn't parrot around bullshit. She absolutely clueless, nice lady and all, but that's not mayoral material.

Chink in the armour? OPEN YOUR EYES CHOW...

Chow is ... Great at being a local councillor... Not so much major material. I commend her fight, but not sure why she went for it. It's not her fight, at all. And she's been through some real tough shit personally, all without bitching about it in public.

Here we go, Mr Monday morning quarterback incoming.

I don't have time to deep dive into a full out debate over this, I am also hurt that scumbag steve called me a racist and bounced

What does Chow bring to the table? I mean seriously, you want to be an advocate for the poor and talk about social welfare reform, go right ahead...that's not what a potential mayor of TORONTO should be basing their platforms on for starters.

Also Ford, crackhead or not, I honestly believe he actually has passion/care for the city and wants the best for it (Rob). He is definitely not the guy for the job for obvious reasons, but I'd rather have someone who will stir the pot than some little overshadowed troll sitting in a corner yammering about the poor and affordable housing and a slew of issues she will never be able to change for the better.

Regardless, glad Tory took it. I am on board with his campaign, even though he isn't my first choice...which brings me back to the original point...I wish Chow was never in the race so we had a better selection.

despite ford being a bumbling idiot on tv(usually when hes lying). He fucking nails speaking to his constituents. like flat out you cant find many people better. He clearly resonates with a lot of people. If Rob ran I think he wouldve taken it.

they clearly pointed out that they will be back in 4 yrs.. Rob, Doug or one of dougs mail order daughters. So I don't think its the last we have seen from them.

Chow despite coattailing a little still has a lot of experience. IMO shes just a typical cold asian person/dats wassis. She lacks a certain depth when speaking and comes off a bit phoney to me. Albeit shes super nice person and if it wasnt for her the entertainment scene in toronto wouldve been shit long ago. Her and Jack were often seen out late at night on the weekend enjoying themselves.

sorry, didn't mean to call you a full blown racist, but your views on the comic strip was racist and i stand by it.

Chow wasn't 1 of 3, if you voted in Toronto, you would've seen that the ballot had literally over 50 names for mayor.

at the end of the day, it's a job, let's pick the person most suited!

Tory - career politican (failed at many attempts) but he never gave up. had a great career in the private sector. well connected

D Ford - wanted to leave municpal politics, but figured might as well run folks, since folks, his brother now has cancer folks, and he can't run for mayor anymore folks. and now he's considering running folks at the provincial level folks!

Chow - 20+ years in politics in various levels. While her platform may not be the strongest, she's definitely more comptent than MANY names that are on the ballot.

I am very interested to know what makes my views racist?

The fact that I agree with the picture that she is riding her late husbands's coattails? That's the only thing I was commenting on and that's the only thing I agreed with. Just because I agree with the general premise of the cartoon how am I racist? THe first time I glanced at the pic (mind you while in a meeting and on my iphone) I didn't pick up on the communist attire...is that what makes me racist? Because i agreed with a piece of the message of the pic, in particular one that was NOT racially inspired?

Chow - 20+ years in politics in various levels. While her platform may not be the strongest, she's definitely more comptent than MANY names that are on the ballot.

I am very well aware we don't only have 3 mayoral candidates lel, come on man who do you take me for. At the end of the day the only 2-3 that have a chance are the ones that get the media exposure. You are telling me if the spotlight switched from Chow to someone else, she wouldn't lose votes?

Exactly the reason someone like her has no business being mayor, stick to the arts and all the soft issues that have no quantifiable impact on the city as a whole. She is passionate and an advocate for issues that are not a priority....she has no business running a world class city, she is just fine over in hipsterville.

world class? lel

thats only 1 aspect mane..of many. Though Im curious how entertainment and arts has no quantifiable impact on a city...especially one that touts the "world class" bs.

Without those two things you have no city.

People dont visit toronto(or other cities) to see how nicely decked out their trading floors are.

Not being quantifiable in the sense that tourism is not even a blip on the radar when it comes to the different revenue streams this city has to handle/rationalize before we even get to arts. Simple 80/20 rule, focus your efforts on our largest income streams: income tax, HST, provincial/federal funding and our biggest expenses: Gridlock/TTC/Police/etc.... streaminline that shit before you talk to me about entertainment and arts (income stream = irrelevant) in the city. If Toronto's mayor was spending his time focusing on arts and entertainment then I'd rather have Ford back in doing coke and ketamine off Mammoliti's ass crack.

Arts and entertainment impact is also overblown because it's what media reports on. TIFF/Nuit Blanche/insert whatever here makes a much bigger media splash in terms of coverage than savings/cuts at city hall, one has 100x the financial impact than the other, yet people throw arounds arts and entertainment as if it's relevant.

Yes it's relevant, just not to the mayor. They should support and it help those who push for it, but that shouldn't be on their agenda, outsource that shit to the Chows of Toronto.

you are missing the forest for the trees.

Without entertainment and arts we would have no city. No gridlock, no ttc issues etc because no one would want to live here. There is however an overall net benefit to the city(and income stream) from these events and activities even if you dont partake and think its not relevant to the mayor.

No one is saying those other aspects(of which there are many) are not or of less importance. Like it or not arts and entertainment are intrinsic to a world class city. To cast them a side and say they dont matter or are not important because(they MAY) not have the highest numbers on a spreadsheet is asinine.

And besides I only brought it up because she helped out in a big way along the way as a councillor. I dont think it was ever her main focus.

Despite coattails chow has been around the block a few times too. She may have trouble getting her point across and lack some originality/personability but I think she deserved to be there just as much as the other two did.

In fact Id say Doug had less "right" to be there and is coattaling more on Robs back than Olivia is on Jacks.

Who knew that arts and entertainment was at the forefront of Toronto’s dynamic sociodemographic issues?

Never disputed the *fact* that there is a benefit to the city, why is this relevant to this convo?
I partake and contribute in multiple capacities (more so than majority of Toronto’s population) to Toronto’s art and entertainment scene, so again another irrelevant comment on your end. Celebration of Yorkville/Bloor in the summers and Nuit Blanche being the biggest ones. I also attend many other events throughout the year, so while I may come off as someone that doesn’t put Art/Entertainment high on my list of "Toronto's issues that need immediate addressing", I value and appreciate it.

Maybe next year I will hit up digital dreams or wahtever thing you go to and hide out in the partapotty during a rain storm, i suppose in your eyes that would make me an equal to you and your indepth experience with TOronto's art/ent scene lel \:\|

You are putting words in my mouth, I said they are not important RELATIVE to the issues the city has. Of course Art/Ent are important, just not something that needs much focus in relation to everything else that needs addressing. That also doesn’t mean to ignore this area or to stop funding, it means continue doing what you are doing, let someone else be a cheerleader for it, as a mayor support it, but don’t deep dive trying to make it as a critical issue that needs addressing, spend that time on dealing with cop unions and how to cut red tape at city hall.

RE: your spreadsheet comment is another con for Arts/Entertainment, quantifying the net benefit to the city is impossible, and I am sure when doing a basic ROI it would fall flat on its face because everyone always talks about numbers overly inflated tourism numbers, dollars spent, etc. The value of AE is intrinsic to the people of the city and those who visit, someone can build a much better case for additional investment based on than just numbers, IMO.

Main focus or not, her platform sure played it off as one of her bigger accomplishments. On its own it’s great what she has done! How relevant is that to me as a quality in city hall? not very relevant, but it does make me feel warm and fuzzy inside doe.

I agree with this, but Doug’s situation was completely different, driven from emotion, keeping a legacy going, spur of the moment, etc. Chow was coattailing from the get go.

as an artist, i just saw it as a really poor depiction of olivia. there's no way i would've guessed it was her if not for layton's jacket. really, i'm more offended as an artist that THAT guy gets his work published in the paper.

personally, i see the drawing as mildly racist. i probably would've drawn her with a nicer face and the suit dresses that she wears, and a bike instead of a skateboard (what's with the fucking skateboard?). i do like the riding of the coat tails tho. that was on point.

i'm curious c_snapper, you call Tory a career politician. by your definition, I think all three would be. and if you ask me, the only one who makes politics their career is Chow. Both Ford and Tory have had plenty of success in the private sector.

and the other thing with Chow that has me suspicious is that she's been here 40 years and her English seems more and more accented every year. part of me thinks she's playing the crowd. i wouldn't expect her to be completely free of her accent, but it's pretty bad that she kept saying "Duck Ford".
