The OG washer dryer that came with the house a good 18 years ago is pretty much given up the ghost so we need to start looking for a replacement. So whats a good brand for the combo? Front or top loading? Go for the steam option or dont bother? Any key features to look out for?

We have an LG. Front loads.

Wife wanted front loads as they use less water, detergent, energy and less wear on the clothes (no blade in the washer tub to turn the clothes).

Maybe it's just newer (replacement of 15 y.o. Units that came with the house), but it's also quieter.

We do have the steam feature, it's nice to have if you got a shirt that's not really dirty but just want to freshen it up and wear again. We've only used it 3-4 times in 3 years of ownership.

Extra care is required for front load washers. Keep door open to air dry, wipe down gasket as water does get trapped and yield a moldy smell. And once in a while run a light bleach cycle to clean the tub.

LG ones are good.
Still made in Korea.
Don't get Samsung appliances. They out source too much and break easily.

I think me and hyper have the same LG set. Although I don't have any odor issues and we have only used the steam function a couple of times. The current top leads don't have the agitator anymore so they should just be as gentle on clothes as the FL. Both have their trade-offs. The TL requires you to reach in and the FL you will need to bend down, unless you get the pedestal.

One more thing about FLs - esp. when getting the clothes out of the dryer.

Always put the laundry basket under the door - there'll always be a towel / sock that falls out. The last thing you need is to get a freshly piece of clothing dirty again (esp. if your washer / dryer is in the same place as your garage entrance).

I got Samsung models with pedestal ... You can either DIY pedestals (being careful that it's sturdy and 'water resistant') or buy them and pay arm and leg.

Trade-off with pedestal vs none... Save your back + more cupboard space vs loss of a 'folding area' i.e. top of the units)

I opted to save my back and use my bed as folding area.

Steam function ... used it ... once.

We originally ordered pedestals but then cancelled them. The laundry is on the second floor and the washer/dryer sit inside a 'tub' so we wouldn't have been able to make use of the storage.

At $200 a pop, I would probably skip the pedestals and get a better combo unit. May go top load and get something with the most capacity, will need it with 5 of us. A big thing will be warranty and customer service as these things don't seem to hold up like they used to.

Yeah, was just going to ask how many people are in the household. GF and I picked up a 5 cu ft washer and a 7.4 cu. ft. dryer - both Maytag. We do a load of whites one week and a load of coloured the next week and it's never a full load.

The Maytags have been great but we've only had them for a couple of months.

FWIW, I bought everything Samsung wrt kitchen appliances + W/D. (TV ended up being an LG for the 'smart remote') ...

The POS french door fridge LCD display has 2 stuck 'pixels' on it after ... 8 mths use... POS.

W/D are fine, but they're not sexy blue LCD - they're red, but working fine.

Ended up getting the one I linked above, got 15% off the sale price online so hopefully it works with no issues and delivery is painless.

Tip: there are a couple ways to make the W/D slide/move easier on tiles...

a) tilt it up onto 2 'feet', and do the penguin waddle with it
b) if sliding the bitch across the floor, wet the floor with a mop and it should slide easier.

Also make sure the W & D doors open 'away' from each other, so you can' open both, and easily move all the clothes from one to another ... Only the W or the D can swap the door hinge...
