I have a bottom loading freezer in my fridge.
Every month or so, the floor of the freezer has a 1cm slab of ice covering the entire area of the floor. I pop it out and throw it outside but if I don't do this routinely, water starts to drip out on to the floor.

Any thoughts one what this could be?
There is no ice/water dispenser in the door.

Yes. Your drain line is clogged or frozen.

Hmm and here I was trying to convince da wife to get a bottom freezer setup -- would this mean more maintenance than a top freezer set up?

Yeah, I've never noticed this with any top freezer fridges. But in all fairness, this only happened with mine after a 3 or 4 day power out. I was told that when the power went out, the plug filled with water but didn't drain. Once the power came back on, the water there froze. It's a quick fix though, pull everything out, pour some hot water in and done.

That was with the fridge in the condo we were renting. Now that we're in a new place, we've gone with another bottom freezer fridge. IMO, it's easier to get things in/out with this setup.

I have had 2 fridges with freezers on the bottom and never had issues with either.

my 10 year old bottom freezer fridge also does not exhibit this issue. i don't think that it's a common issue. thaw out the freezer and start over.

If yours is anything like mine, you do thaw it out, but you replace it with an uprated drain so the problem doesn't happen again, then start over.

Had the same problem with my KENmore, I called and got it fixed under warranty, and never again. \:\)
