I started at the gym in the second week of august 2012 for the first time in my life. Started at 6'6'' 225, and nearly a 35'' waist.

I am now down to a consistent 190, and I fit comfortably into a 32'' waist jean.

I really should be in the gym more if I want to gain mass, but I love volleyball too much to give it up in lieu of the gym.

IMO A Sport you like that is active and physical shouldn't cut into your gym time. Just need to balance it and I'd say you are doing it right with the larger portion going to volleyball.

If you were consistent in the gym doing a good beginners program you could have been packing on lean muscle and dropping fat like crazy...

You are being unrealistic.. he dropped 40+ pounds in less than a year and probably doubled most of his lifts in that time. This is all good progress ... get Fucking real Diezel.

It's not unrealistic... A noob lifter can actually build muscle mass AND lose fat at an extreme rate in the first year if you're consistent and make progressions...

Considering I lost 62 and actually put on noticeable size as an experienced lifter...? Yeah I'd say he was a little behind where he could be... And I did that in 7-8 months...

And you know I'm not into those fad diets...

You also have to remember that sports play a big role in limiting gains. I'm sure he COULD have been bigger if he didn't play volleyball so much, but where's the fun in that?

Same with me. I could be a lot bigger if I didn't play soccer every day. Fuck that noise.

I was an avid volleyball player 7-10 years ago when I was 210 pounds and muscular...

Don't get me wrong, I know not everyone is looking for huge ass muscles bulging everywhere, lol...

I think it just depends on how hard you're playing. Lots of cardio will do it, no matter the actual sport.

For the record, I am not butthurt at all. I took Cory's comments constructively, and it's all motivation.

I will say, DEFINITIVELY that I Could ABSOLUTELY have lost more excess weight, and gained more muscle, with both more dedication to the gym, and more discipline on my diet.

However, I will also say that I am very happy with my body currently. My on again off again 22 year old gf LOVES it, and I think for a 6'6'' guy I pull off "decently fit but not too damned skinny" quite well.

I have mostly left flat bench out, and have been alternating incline and decline. I go high(er) rep to failure, though I've been considering switching to a high weight/low rep program to build more chest mass.

Currently I go for three sets of 10 reps, and if I achieve that, next time in the gym I step the weight up. My goal is to be failing on the third set around 7-10 reps.

Some nights is a bit easier than others.

Recently I've been playing thursdays for 3 hours with the college crowd (at my age of 29), and on Fridays I play 3 hours with the University of Hartford Club team (omgmakesmewannadie).

I play another two nights a week, but bother are a bit more relaxed.


















I wish I took a side silhouette photo. The difference is astounding.

Also, despite how it appears, my chest/arms are a lot bigger now vs then, thankfully.
