I hate you. <3

I got out for 20 yesterday. Rode the first half of the loop chatting with a 50-something dude who was super cool. Smoked for 30 years, quit, lost 65 lbs and got on a bike. He had a nice flat black Cannondale--didn't catch the model. I pulled him along for 10 miles. He appreciated the wheel, as he hadn't done much for training over the winter. Did 3 centuries last year, so he was pretty hardcore.

I felt good. The intervals on the trainer showed up bigtime in terms of strength. I might actually gain fitness over the winter for a change.

Between (mostly) the improved aero of my new fitted shell and (partially) the 50mm wheels on my bike, I was going a decent amount faster than I did on my steelie while wearing the looser fleece.

I hope to get out on Friday before the weather pushes me back indoors next week.

That's some serious saddle time!

It's nuts to think what a pro must train like if you two (nato & shamrock) are hitting it this hard as amateurs.

Lot more quality vs quantity there. Having a coach makes a big difference, as does fine tooth combing every calorie you take in.

And right now I'm just 'trying' to be prepared for endurance events that happen relatively early in year. Once the Ouachita Challenge is done, I'll be doing more xc oriented work

i just signed up for a 13 hr solo mtb race april 2. leesburg bakers dozen. 500 field limit, sold out in a hour and a half. last year the winner did 21 laps of a 8 mile course...yes thats right. its two weeks out from the cohutta 100 with 16.5K of climb so i figure it will be a good last ride to dial in nutrition/hydration and from there i will taper off until cohutta.

nothing shitty enters the body - watch that BTB I linked, "i'm going to reward myself for winning the national cx race with half a donut and a small piece of pie"

I win something like that, I'd be doing a keg stand and killing an entire thin crust pizza

12 hours until it starts.

I'm going to give it a shot but it's going to be hard as hell doing that many rides in a row with the workouts scaled to my FTP. I have a feeling after a few days i'll have to scale the workouts down to 90% or 85% of my regular workout FTP.

Ride 1 done
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/657559-Sufferfest-Rubber-Glove

Pushed a bit hard than I wanted to but the ride also happens to be a FTP test so I wanted to see how much i've improved.
Ended up doing better than I expected and had a calculated FTP of 298. Definitely not switching to that number until after I complete all the rides this week. Tomorrows ride is going to be hell

Ride 2 done relatively pain free
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/660299-Sufferfest-ISLAGIATT

Set personal best averages of 280W for 60 minutes and 276W for 90 minutes. That is actually pretty close to my recently calculated FTP of 298, would have been nice to actually ride that for an hour but I gotta save my legs and sort of follow the ups and downs of the workouts.

Edit - Day 3 complete
Absolute hell, I think i'm going to puke

No analysis, but I RAPED my trainer on Saturday.

23 minute spin to warm up, watching a /DRIVE rally vid and then did a 53 minute crit vid (also on youtube) of intervals that had me gasping for breath.

I can't get over how much stronger I am vs. last year. I'm VERY curious to see how I'm riding in the warmer months. I swear that Saturday workout was as intense as my time trial is--which is fucking awesome. If I can do that a couple of times a week for the next couple of months, I'll be in a very good place come Spring.

It also looks like I might be picking up a hot chick training partner (through some networking through friends) for the Spring. Good thing I'm married and faithful.

looks fun shamrok!

had first cat1 race on sat and of course it had to snow 6inches on wednesday. no one rode the trails so it was a friggin mess. it was semi packed thanks to the cat3 and 2 race before us but the turns were all washed out. got fucked on the start trying to fight with everyone for about 8" of packed trail and people falling all over the place. so i lost touch with the leaders like 15 minutes in thanks to people falling in front of me and me sliding out a lot. i should had new tires as mine are pretty bald from last year. ran most of the climbs first lap. i just battled the whole race to keep the bike up in turns. fitness wise i was good as i dropped over a minute each lap. was prob running to high of psi too at 20. shoulda put like 15psi in the tires. but oh well, it was a good training race. i got 17th out of 34 but i was only 3 minutes behind the 10th place guy, so it def wasnt a fitness issue, just a matter of who could stay upright and smooth the best. i mean the guys who won were def good as they finished 13 min ahead of me but oh well. heres a few pics.

Bike + snow? Fuuuuck that. My toes are freezing just looking at those pictures.

I finished Day 4 of the ToS - Hell hath no fury

My legs are definitely starting to feel it. Tomorrow is two rides, should be interesting.

Pimp wheelset on the 29er, nato!

However, fuck that shit. I wouldn't know where to begin with that. I'd probably start with studded tires, tho.

Gnarly.

Day 5 and thankfully past the half way point

Day 6 - Legs are running out of steam. They're giving up before I can even get my HR up
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/685786-A-Very-Dark-Place-pre-June-2013-

Two 1 hour rides tomorrow, I can taste the blood already.

Stage 7 complete
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/688708-sufferfest-the-hunted
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/691297-sufferfest-angels

My legs are toast, I can barely maintain much power above 300W for longer than a minute. Think I may take advantage of the 50 hour window for each stage and take tomorrow off to rest a bit and wrap it up saturday and sunday.

Stage 8!

Legs felt great today, lets see how they hold up to violator.

Last but not least, and probably the most hellish stage
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/701004-sufferfest-violator

Ended up completing 9 stages in 9 days and for the most part was able to hit above and beyond all my power marks.

In 9 days I did 11 rides totaling 12 hours and 2 minutes.
11120 calories burned, though I probably just ate that many calories in gyros.
Average normalized power of 275W over the 9 days.

Also hit a ton of personal bests.

Think i'm going to take a couple days off, do a FTP reassessment since i'm putting out much higher than my current FTP and just fall into an intermediate plan that can give me about 5 hours a week of riding.

Time for a beer.
