The new speed limit — the highest anywhere in Canada — goes into effect immediately on Hwy. 5 (the Coquihalla) from Hope to Kamloops; Hwy. 97C from Aspen Grove to the Drought Hill Interchange in Peachland; and Hwy. 19 (the Island Highway) from Parksville to south of Willis Rd. in Campbell River. Speed limits are also going up by 10 km/h on more than 30 other stretches of highway where limits currently range between 80 km/h and 100 km/h. These are the maximum speeds for "ideal conditions," Transportation Minister Todd Stone said. Drivers are still urged to reduce their speed accordingly in bad weather. "The speed limit increases are supported by an engineering assessment of each section and are approved by the ministry's chief engineer," Stone said. The changes come after a province-wide review and are aimed at improving "safety and mobility."
