you guys better not be using chamois anymore....and if you still are i'll be doing a order from e-shine soon so I can grab some more waffle weave towels if anyone wants/needs one.

my car, altho it doesn't have any scratches or dents, it was probably never waxed:

after

clayed and polished:

sealed and wheels/tires dressed and windows cleaned. still need to throw the rims on, polish the exhaust and de-badge it.

oh and btw; I needed a new clay bar, went into crappy tire thinking all clays are made alike

never ever buy the simonize clay bar. it's such a POS. it's not even like clay, it's more like a brick of bubble gum that you can't even kneed over and starts to just come apart after two panels. lucky I had a new meguires one that I found at home but I find that its not aggressive enough. after using them all the yellow mothers bar works the best.

sick tsx work. yeah eshine.ca just had a pretty good sale but another will come up soon. there's something about a good white paint that just comes thru SO well after a proper detail!

yeah clay bars have quite the difference. i used a good brand from eshine was back on teh s2k (forget the name), then used mothers on the STI and it was just ok. much harder (similar to what you described) than the other higher end stuff. not sure if meguires has a claybar but i wonder how their quality is?

waffle weave towels FTW. shit'll soak up more water than vas's tears, crying after missing out on a 18yr old washer/dryer set on the side of the road for garabage day.

Meguiars does have a claybar. I used it on the M. I don't think my car was EVER waxed either lol. My bar turned brown...holy shit!

Just went to town with a 3000 grit sand paper to get rid of scratches. I was going to order 105/205 from eshine last year but they were out of stock. Found meguairs over the shelf Ultimate Compound to be just aggressive enough to get rid of swirls.

Chamois take forever because they fill with water so fast, so you have to keep wringing them out, that and they leave a butt ton of swirl marks behind. Not to mention they stink and are expensive. $20 or whatever and you'll never look back and it'll last you forever.

Thanks fellas, I started out with the clay, then 205 on a orange lake country pad. Normally I would use a white polishing pad but the car had some decent swirling (hard to see on a white car) but I knew it was a good amount because the pearl wasn't showing like it should. So tested the more aggressive pad with the 205 and it worked great.

After sealed with the Blackfire wet diamond on a blue finishing pad.

Bill bring over that 205/105 and we Will knock it out quick!

You are going to see those rust spots every spring no matter what if you own a white car.

Use Iron-X to remove.

Anyone use a foam gun/cannon? There are two types, one for pressure washers and one for reg hoses.

Are these worth it? Do they help or is it just a novelty item?

Is it rust? I've been told it's tree sap, rail dust, road tar, whatever. My sister in law has it all over her white crv so I'll have to polish that out too.....shit.

It's from the plows scraping up the roads in the winter, it's gotta be iron or some sort of metal dust from the plows/road surface... So it is rust but it's not rust from your car \:\) My parents car has it all over the front fenders, you can pick it off with your fingernail.

Got this one and it's worth it for those quick washes where you don't need to drag out buckets

^i bought one but it came busted in shipping

That detail took me about 6hrs, but the majority of the time was spent cussing at the pos simonize clay bar, I actually used both friggin bars. Also took my time getting every damn rust spot deposit off the car.

Be careful with M105. Although it does make very quick work of removing scratches, on most paints it is removing way more clear coat than you need to be. Its basically liquid sandpaper and I see it being used way too much.

So would you suggest 205 for getting rid of swirls? I've been using ultimate compound with good results.

Doing my detail as we speak, have you tried menzerna products? Bmws have pretty hard clear coats, this stuff plus orange pad does wonders. Even my 17 year old paint comes out pretty good, I don't go too hard doe as I am trying to preserve the oem clear as much as I can.

You're right, I've used it once and it dusted and was a super pain in the ass to take off. If I actually used it, it would have to be on a car that was really screwed, otherwise the 205 pretty much gets out everything.

No idea how the hell you did a detail in 6 hours.

I spent 6 hours today just removing swirl marks...had to go through two orange pads, basically two phases of the same shit 3-4 minutes for every 2'x2'. Fuck i hate detailing cars, I might be over doing it compared to most but I don't want to do it for a few years.

Nice results risky! I bet it took you long because you spent a lot of time masking. I just mask quick and I guess I've been doing it long enough that I can keep it away from the edges but it useto take me a good 10-12hrs.

Also sealing can be done QuickTime, the Blackfire on blue pad goes on like butter, and doesn't haze fast, so I can do hood/fender/door/rear door and quarter panel before stopping to wipe it all off.

Also a pc takes a bit more time compared to an orbital. Just the nature of the tool being used. So it's understandable.

nice results but how did you burn through 2 pads? I burned through a pad the first time using my PC. I emailed them and they said the main reason is too much pressure applied. The pads should last a long time.

I spent 6 hours today just removing swirl marks...had to go through two orange pads, basically two phases of the same shit 3-4 minutes for every 2'x2'. Fuck i hate detailing cars, I might be over doing it compared to most but I don't want to do it for a few years.

It has to be the pressure and in the pad's defense they are still usable, but i just found them to be way too soft and it was taking longer and longer to remove swirls. Once I switched to a new pad and went over the same spot it was basically half the effort.

I personally wouldn't use an old/used pad on a new detail, but that's just me.

you just have to take care of them, I've never replaced pads. just have to wash them out with a bit of dish soap and let them air dry. instead of putting more pressure I would turn up speed and use 1/2 of the pressure, or a more aggressive pad. what color pad were you using risky? even still new pads are always nice. or actually, are you using the little ones?

anyways, part two today. de-badged, polished the muffler tips, high heat painted the muffler cans as they were flaking and looked ugly, and just re-dressed the interior. oh and tossed in those baller bright white plate bulbs.

after:

and I was going to put on the DC5R wheels but decided against it, I don't have the TPMS sensors so i'll have to dismount, install and re-mount the tires with them in it. do they make cheaper aftermarket sensors?

You can use foil to polish the tips... Almost free and most importantly it's cheap!!!

I just barfed a little...

Screamin, wtf is up with using a SOS pad to clean the tips? Told you guys already to use tinfoil. SOS pads are abrasive and you end up adding scratches to the finish.

dude tip was bad enough to need SOS pad. i had it super soaked though so was ok, and no scratches (the small mark at top was already there long ago). plus i dont care as it looks decent enough given how old/mashup it is already lol.

225/40/18's on the civic, i was surprised how big. (that's what she said). weird getting used to the new DA audio system, no knobs at all...just like using your phone......

still trying to get used to that front F360 style bumper too lol.

yeah not a fan of these double styled rims all companies are doing, meh. and where did the vtec go \:\( barely any changeover noise.

6spd shifter is mint though. as are all the little features like full keyless entry (leave fob in pocket), rear view cam, passenger side signal cam, heated seats, revised tuning, etc.

Mine could use a major detail, I could probably just paint it faster than try making it look good again. Yeah, I'll just do that.

Props to some of the work you guys are doing though, I wish I knew how!!

I'd still rock those if they were forged. I love polished lip on any rim!

That exhaust would look mint if you used metal polish & 2000 grit sandpaper. Minimal work

^ pretty cool

Washed it for the first time on the weekend but I'll need to wax it soon.

-Painted the calipers silver
-Put on the red vinyl to get rid of the ugly yellow signals today (looks way better)
-Light smoke vinyl on the lower reflectors to better blend in with taillights
-Put in Philips Ultinon bulbs in headlights
-Wheel spacers on the way
-Pick up Tanabe springs Saturday
-Rear ghetto tint comes off and new 50% tint comes on Wednesday

Looks better with no perceivable difference in light output (even though technically it may be slightly less). It's the little details that make a car look better than a stock one while still looking close to OEM.

This spray paint that I always use and lots of masking and patience. It holds up pretty well and every spring I just lightly hit it again. I can check into what kind it is but it's not a specialty paint it's a metallic silver that's very durable.

^i do that too, I really need to do the tsx's rear calipers. I sand the rust off and spray the spray paint into a cup and use one of those sponge brushes and dab it on. Sticks nicely and no mess.

I wanted pre cut for the rear signals (they're a funny shape) so there is one place on eBay that has it but lamin-x red is good. Just depends on the car but honestly it matches right on. I had it on my is350 the entire time I owned it and it was perfect. Looks like how it should have from the factory and lights up fine too.

Looks great! Why's the wife still on winters?

I can't find the mitt anywhere locally and don't want to risk paying $100 for it by the time I get it from the US So I tried the clay again and it did what it needed to... it'll do.

Washed, waxed, cleaned carpets and treated the leather.

Installed springs, subframe collars, intake and shifter bushings.

Whatever I can't find the origional thread searching on my phone I'll just post it here. If you guys remember I tried that 3M spray clear bra thing back in fall. I took it off, it was like Saran wrap, but it did do something because the headlights came out Really clean. It was cold and rainy when I took it off so it came off pretty easily.

Headlights yellow due to the UV coating wearing out, so unless this spray on stuff has UV protection it isn't going to do jack for yellowing.

-Put in Philips Ultinon bulbs in headlights
-Wheel spacers on the way
-Pick up Tanabe springs Saturday
-Rear ghetto tint comes off and new 50% tint comes on Wednesday

Wow my car is way lower now lol

New coilovers on last week and new rims come in next week (avant garde m580 in 20's). I look forward to being able to wax the car in the next few weeks - I feel I'm getting old.

Not hard to do once you have the proper tools. I wax the M regularly (once a month) and won't need to clay again lol. When I first picked up the M it took me a week to clay it. Had to do it twice.

Will need to detail wife's volt once it warms up and see how bad it is (waxed it in the fall).

Would you guys rather deal with the cold or more snow? We got lucky and didnt get hammered with snow like the midwest and the east coast did over the weekend.

Made the call today that I dont believe it's going to really snow again.

New suspension in, tweaked the ride height. Rear camber arms in, alignment and summer wheels on. I'll save a full detail for another weekend. These wheels go to the new owner in a few weeks and my new ones come in next week most likely.

Same shot in front of the same location lol

The chrome around the windows helps a sedan have a coupe look on higher end cars. I thought about vinyl for it but I think it will look worse.

I agree with this 100%
ESP with the challenged, higher beltline modern cars, the chrome helps.
PLUS, if the sihouette shape of the window profile looks good, there's nothing wrong with accenting it with chrome. Black just makes it looks like any other car.

I can see BMW guys wanting black, bc the bmw chrome trim shape/thickness is nasty, as is the window profile--especially towards the C pillar.

The nice thing about the Lexus window bezels (Jeff's car) is that it looks 1 piece, and is smoothed out nicely. vs the bmw one, u can see all the breaks in the chrome for the door jams and such. Plus, it doesn't help that the chrome bezel on the top of the window is different in width from the sides of the window...and different once again for the bottom of the window. YUCK.

Gross. Thx for posting more chrome nastiness 4age. I completely disagree how any chrome looks good on anything that is suppose to be sporty looking.

Jaguar, Maserati, Aston Martin, Rolls etc all use it in their designs. I agree it looks out of place on some cars but it is a standard auto design characteristic

Just the grille surround. I used plastidip - if done right looks decent and is amazingly durable to be on a front end that gets hit with rocks, sand and bad weather.

I didn't say I liked Chrome or I didn't like Chrome. For the grille I didn't like the shape so blacking it out makes it blend in more.

The lexus badge is still Chrome. Because I don't have super dark tint and the colour of the car I don't know if black window trim will be enough contrast. I like the coupe like window profile.

Thanks - not really many pics - I just took a couple of phone pics as I parked. I park on the road there to check my ride height after I adjust coilovers.

That looks sharp, this guy telling us he will go back to a Ford Fusion GTFO

Love the wheels and the chrome trim suits the car really well. I agree in a lot of cases it doesn't look good, but on this car + colour with the wheels it's a nice accent imo.

Agreed. It's also the front lip that Jeff added that makes the awkward front bumper look proper.

This is what a stock one looks like:

Thats a non F Sport bumper.

But you are right, there is a lip on Jeff's car.

Thats the stock. That lip is a very nice additional.

what wheels are those on the x5? not sure if it's the wheel or the angle of the photo, but makes it looked jacked up.

looks nice though, the wheels must be a bitch to clean.

I love the wet paint look that you can get out of a dark coloured car.

Yup those are arc-8's, they are quite a bit lighter compared to the stock 18's even with larger rubber.

Hyper, that camry is beige not silver ok!!!

Nice family car Hator.

Temp wise, it looks like it will be good for a good weekend for clay and wax.

Looks better in person. The wheels are concaved and looks sexy. I agree that these do look a bit too classic for the gen. But still works and isn't flashy which is what I wanted.

Still haven't washed since last summer.
Haven't vacuumed in about 2 years.

Even forgot about the summer rims until I saw the hub centric rings in the garage drawer today.

Lol

Ferrari is ready. May3rd is the first cars and coffe at engineered automotive. Would like to go check that place out.
Rs2 needs a couple things. I've been spending so much lately (wife's new car, daughters new room, and other house stuff) I don't really have enough to go around to all the cars lol. Kinda regret getting another right now, especially with baby #2 on the way. If I waited 1 more month I would not have bought a second toy

Yup by hand, little little drop of soap and squish everything out.

On the subject of foam pads, It kinda feels like they don't have the cutting power they did when new, is that possible or Just me lol

Did my wax cheat over the weekend ....

- hand wash with soap and sponge, manually cleaned out the rear wheel wells
- RainX on the windows
- ghetto waxing with Turtle wax + cordless hand buffer of metal portions of the car; skipped the bumpers \:\|
- Touchup paint all over the fucking place ... \:\|
- DIY toothpaste haze removal on headlights; didn't work out that great

Too lazy to clay bar it... I may have to get some super duper liquid/shiny-looking wax and do it again ...

Just washed my car for the time this year.
Then couldn't pass up detailing the car after seeing all those rust dots on the paint.

When I started to apply the Klass All-in-one, I realized this stuff is like 10 years old and I wasn't sure if it's worth using it anymore.

So tried this Silverwax Fast Wax sample I got from the autoshow in Jan.
Just spray, wait a minute, then buff. Super easy, but learned that it only last s like a couple of months.

I looked into this stuff a little further. I think it's based on Quebec and can't really find reviews on them.

They also have this nano (ceramic?) stuff for about $60. Bargain compare to other leading brands'. They say it's good up to 3 cars.

Interesting video I watched today.

Turtle Wax Ice liquid wax lasted surprisingly long. ( wtf? Hard to find).
All the ceramics over lasted it but the cost difference is very high.

Maybe I'll try Silverwax sealant? Probably good for about a year.

^so that spray wax will last like...a month max. what those are ment to do is give the car that fresh waxed look (if it's been clayed, polished and sealed properly beforehand), you wash the car and spray that on it and it brings back that gloss. otherwise, it won't last a shit and barely add shine to a car without a good wax if it's not there.

that nano ceramic stuff seems like a gimmick to me. haven't used it so i can't comment on it but it can't be anything more spectacular than a sealant. it's not a coating, so i would call it smoke and mirrors. a $50 bottle of blackfire would probably be better and can do up to 40 cars.

Though the guy who tested in the video, all the ceramic coated lasted over a year unde the sun.
Everything else (wax, sealant) failed.

He also has another video going right now with 34? Different products on the hood.

I detail it once a year anyway. Too rich for me.
What do you use ?

personally i don't pay attention to youtube product vids, i like to try the product out for myself and then make a decision. i stick to the clay/polish/seal routine that will last about 6-8 months and may re-seal which doesn't take long about every two months because i'm extra like that. if i were looking for something more long term i would consider doing a coating and a specific quick spray wax that keeps the coating looking fresh.

I've been looking for some kind of DIY ceramic (nano?) coating shit, but the ones I looked at you need a heat lamp to cure it ...

Still looking... Too poor to get CSI pros to do my detailing.

I use to be into detailing my cars... had all the products, clays, polish... this was more than 10 years ago now so all the product I still have are shit, and very out dated... someone school me on the basics? I have a waterless spray wash/wax that I've been using for quick cleans.. and two buckets and some ol' fashion soap for a good wash... but I want that shine back. Is waxing THAT outdated? All I keep reading about is ceramic coating and fancy shit that's new to me.

Did a decent wash yesterday in the driveway and pressure washed the salt/junk coated front mats. I'm sure it will rain any day now.

nope. a good clay bar, polish and wax will go a long, long way. basics: wash with meguries gold class (crappy tire $14), clay ($20 crappy if you want to go through claying, use wash soap), polish (meguires M205, amazon smallest size, use machine dual action polisher), seal w/whatever sealant you like, i like blackfire. tire shine clean rims and bling out.

I've got tons. Do the clay mitts do anything with those or am I better off using a bar? Does IronX help?

clay mitt or bar, it's the same thing. a bar is better for getting into the tight spaces tho so i always have both on hand.

IronX does help, quite a bit however, i don't use it. it's pretty much the same thing as sonax wheel cleaner; a cleaner based detergent that reacts with iron (the fallout), turns purple and dissolves it. personally i don't like it because what about the parts that don't have iron on it? it's strong enough that it doesn't leave clear coat alone so i'd rather be on the safe side and go at it with a clay bar and some elbow grease and save the clear coat. plus, it stinks. bad. so bad that i would consider wearing a respirator if using it.

Sonax for rims is the absolute BOMB ...

I used to just spray on, let it sit, then wash off, no drying, and a few days later I'd get this disgusting grey build-up of dirt... Finally grabbed a rag to rub it off, and those rims are damn shiny, and stay shiny...

Yeah but expensive. My wheels stay clean till I drive and I’ll it’s over. Brake dust is so bad that I can see brake dust streaks on the side of the car LOL

sonax is great and all but it's expensive, and not needed. before you slap your summer wheels on give them a nice inside and out clean with the sonax. then grab your sealant or any wax for that matter and slap a coat of wax on them, takes 10 mins.

then you'll be able to wipe brake dust right off, or at most some quick detailer or car wash soap while you're washing the car. it'll save the wheels from the clear coat peeling.
