anybody use backup software to backup their pc's?
I have my media pc backing up to a dlink nas. I'm using a small app by MS called SyncToy but I find that sometimes it misses files randomly...not sure why tho.
I use the stock win7 to back up my pc's to the server then I use synctoy to backup the server to the nas.
I'm not too concerned about my movies and such so much, but my docs and my music I would hate to lose. My music has been (like most here) a collection since mp3's started so it would really suck to lose all that.

Anything avail that does incremental backup thats reliable? All my pc's are on win7 if that makes a difference. I don't want anything that uses proprietory compression or stores everything into a single iso or something type of file. I prefer it copy things 1:1 to the nas. This way i can browse the nas whenever I want and see whats there or copy a file back that was accidentally deleted from the server etc. THe nas stroage matches that of the server hence the 1:1 ratio

I use Windows Home Server. If yours is just a Win7 box, maybe consider installing WHS. All your PCs can backup to it easily.

For my pc to pc internal I do it manually currently which sucks. For my external, it does it automatically whenever I connect it.

I don't keep any files on the macbook, everything gets saved on the external.

I have to say my network is pretty decent. I've had network pc's since back in the days of coax cable networking so its been a while.
I have a simple d-link NAS just for backup purposes. I've tried ones of those higher end Synology and Qnap nas's but I prefer my dedicated server pc over those. The D-Link is by no means fast but for incremental backups its more than adequate. I do it manually so I'll start it when I head off to bed and its always done by morning time so its a non issue. As i said originally, I have the pc's backup to the Server, and then the Server backs up to the NAS.

I guess I'll just stick to using my current application.

Why not just use the built in Win 7 backup instead of manually? You can set timed intervals no?

when I say manually, I mean I don't have the pcs on a set schedule (daily/weekly/monthly) mainly because everything is stored on the server. My documents folder is a short cut to a folder on the server pc. So really the only thing that i'm backing up from the pc's are stored browers settings and maybe some favourties that change from time to time. Other than that, litterally everything is on the server. Which is the main reason why I'd like different backup solution for the server.

Having only onsite backup is kinda silly, offsite it to Crashplan for DR.

if my house burns down or floods I think I'll have bigger problems than restoring my music collection. Its not THAT important

Before I had enterprise level (VMware, RAID, SAN, Veeam) stuff in my home I used to use good old xcopy. It would, on schedule, copy over only new or changed files from specified directories. Simple, foolproof, no configuration, exact copies, fast (after the first time) no need for restore. It's kind of like synctoy, but actually works and I still use it in business environments for a few things today, never misses a beat.
