Though I still choose cx bike XD Put some fenders on it and you have an all weather warrior!
Put some fenders on the mountain bike and you have an all weather warrior! Only elitist pricks and singlespeed riders are drawn to CX bikes XDXDXDXDXDXD more harder more better. call me crazy, but i much prefer a road bike position to a mountain one. And I value having the drops available in a big big way. a mtb wont deliver in that regard (unless you're john tomac) ^ in which case if i had to have a mtb, i'd build up something retro and set it up just like that You wouldn't build up a retro bike like that after seeing what those parts cost. A beat up to shit 1st & 2nd gen answer manitou fork like that probably goes for $500. I've seen mint condition ones go for like $900. I have one in my basement
bullshit, i demand pics. what other old shit you got?

ok fiiiine i will upload pics later. I also had a proflex 656 (girvin linkage fork and all!) with refreshed elastomers. Since sold.
I was a big bike nerd in the hey day of mountain biking early/mid 90s. Collected a lot of mountain bike action and cut pictures out of them to put in my binders XD I still have a few of those mags. The Tinker juarez, Shawn paler, John tomac, Cadel evans, Missy Giove days. Ok a lot of timeline overlap there but whatever XD

You are going to be cycling on a fawking sidewalk in Mississauga 3 times a month, IT DOESN'T MATTER. A CCM Excel will suit you just as well as some high end CF bike for 10k.

folks in OT are telling me to get a scotts bike?
man there's so many brand out there and I dont even know what to get anymore.
The thing I found with my 960 is that for the components you get, you aren't going to find a better deal. It's a $1500 bike for $1000.. If you stack it up against a regularly priced $1000 bike, it will always come out on top. I've figured out bikes depreciate as bad as cars do. I was looking at a Kona as well, and it's components are 2 levels below the 960 for the same price.. Also, like it was mentioned, if it's not comfortable, it doesn't matter what bike you're on..

^on that note, get a singlespeed. moar harder moar better Or get a geared bike and leave it in a tougher gear? No. Chainsuck,
Learn how to tune a bike and this will never happen.
In cross country? so rare. Learn some bike handling skills to maneuver over obstacles.
lol why is this something anybody should care about??
again, why is this something anybody should be concerned about???????????????
only one I will give you!
They are so useless if you ride varied terrain. There is a reason at races that SS has it's own category, because they are fucking slower than everybody else. Geared = faster AND harder, SS = harder, hike a bike, knees destroyed by 40!
I own a SS and it's fun to ride but it's more of a toy for somebody who already has proper bikes, IMO of course
I must also throw in some XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD so you know i'm not taking this seriously and just busting your tiny balls. XD

I agree 100% Same page, dude.
However, if >I< were to get a mtb, it's just for shits and giggles. And for me, my chosen path would be SS. Not because more harder more better. Just because more basic more fun. I don't know wtf I'm doing on a mtb anyways.
Now in a road context, I also agree. However, a fixed drivetrain is much more efficient at early season training in getting those legs back. Nothing else will spike power outputs in the same manner--you are forced to stand and mash up hills, and then you are forced yet again to spin like a crazed person going down hills. Working on both cadence and power output simultanously, and ensuring that any distance you cover was with 100% pedalling has it's advantages. Not arguable. Just awesome. Truly is more harder more better.
That being said, I have a race bike. For racing. It has gears, it goes fast. And when you ride something like that after 3 months of riding a fixed POS, you feel like you're doping. So for road, the relevance is there. On mountain--I agree. Not really relevant. But for perhaps 90% of the people out there who swing their leg over a mountain bike, they are only doing it for the fun or for the fitness. In my perspective, an SS rig is absolutely fun. Just like the days of being a kid and riding a bmx. You don't worry about anything but the ride itself.
