Someone put out some money already XD
My money is on type r making a return.
That motor is already slated to be a global engine. They look to be spending a lot of time developing it (at least, marketing propaganda suggests that). It would be silly to dump so budget on something which will only see limited markets. Not like Honda is big in Japan...

maybe they release the next 'Si' with this motor. a type-r is meant to imply a stripped down near race car, minimal creature comforts for the sake of performance. they'd probably sell more cars if it had the power, but also heated leather, sound deadening, Navi, A/C, etc. something heavily track tuned would either sell low numbers or be produced in limited numbers, and might not be worth the cost involved in getting it approved for NA roads.
i think there would be the appetite for a type-R in NA, but i'm just not sure that i would make economic sense.

Unfortunately, the latest Civic Type R, like its predecessor, won’t be offered in the U.S. as it is based on the Civic platform designed for the rest of the world. The good news is that we may see some of the car's hardware in the next-generation CR-Z.

I still don't doubt as much as others regarding this car's future in North America. Historically sure, Honda hasn't sent something like this here in a long time. But if Ford is sending Mustang to EMEA and APAC, and Fiat sent the Abarth here, and a market for fun cars long past is emerging (FRS), then why not bring this here. Even Mercedes brought the CLA here (AMG variant included!)--despite failures with past attempts at a cheapy benz.
And ok fine, Type R was lost money for every unit sold in the past. But it served a different purpose. That same purpose is needed once again with Honda's unexciting lineup. Just like what the FRS is/has done for Toyota.
