Well I can certainly outdo the average person jumping into it but not someone that's doing it regularly.
Edit but yes it is a different kind of work

Best way to get faster:
1) step outside with your bike, determine the wind direction. Ride into it.
2) If no wind, find the hills nearest you and ride them!
3) When on a hill, STOP FACKING DOWNSHIFTING. Ride a reasonable gear (maybe 53x18) and attempt it. You'll be shocked what your body can do if you force yourself. When it gets difficult, stand and mash it out. Consider this a strength work out.
4) On some days, stay in the 39 and spin. Target 90rpm minimum, and make it a goal to maintain a whatever target pace (mine used to be 34kph when I did this).
I found #3 and #4 above helped me the most. YMMV. These days, I ride a ghetto bike with zero equipment assistance. Want to go faster? Pedal harder!!! <3 It's all about the pain man! Embrace the pain! Makes you feel alive!

I agree that taking some time off to let the soreness heal is the right thing to do. MEC has something called a cycling liner which is almost like cycling shorts, but not as padded.
The bibs I got a winners were the Sugoi RS series. At 40 bucks I think its a steal. I paid 90 for some biemme bibs and the padding is just as good or even better.
I'm gonna check out the winners by my work to see what they have. I'll relay what kind of stock they have (or not)

FYI, coming as a previous winners head office employee--not every store will have the same stock (but we all knew this). Especially, special items like cycling gear are sent out to stores with known sales volume for that type of stuff. So wherever you saw it, that's likely a good athletic apparel store.
For that sort of stuff, off the top of my head I recall Leaside and College park being good stores for that.

I am down to get/wear shorts, but I want to find a decent deal. Either MEC or maybe that winners in Oakville. Everything else is $100+
I want to wait and get proper gear over the winter, just need something to hold me over now.

A singlespeed and hills is awesome for strength training. I got lazy with mine over the past couple of months and stuck with the geared bikes, though.
