Jesus. You guys are kicking ass. Between a head cold and the fact that my favorite bike path just got 10"+ of snow on it on Thurs-Friday, I'm stillborn.
Spring break (from teaching) is in a week. Hoping that some serious melting takes place by then because I want to do 100-150 miles that week.
shamrok--45 miles on a SS MTB is CRAY.

That's a GNARLY race.
Fuck riding it on a fixed gear. WTF are the people with 2 bottles doing on an unsupported ride? I'd have as much water as humanly possible for that race. Even then, 8000' of climbing seems out of my abilities at the moment.
50-75 miles and I'd try it. It would give me an excuse to buy a cross bike--or I'd see about squeezing 700x28 on my main roadie.

Still sounds rough. For 100 miles, I'd want drop bars for the extra hand positions.
If flats were an issue, I'd deal with the extra 100g and run tire liners--I run them on my "training tire" setups already.
As for riding here, winter won't let go. It's topping out at 40 for most of the next week, which is still enough to keep me inside on the trainer because I don't have great cold weather gear. I might try to get out there this afternoon if it gets into the lower 40's. I'm pissed that my school spring break is going to be cold. It was a 70 degree week this time last year.

Holy fucking carnage.
I'm still stuck on the trainer as it's been abnormally cold--still. I'm hoping to get out on Saturday--supposed to be sunny and 41 (it was 70 at this time last year ). I just need to get some fucking miles in on something other than a trainer.
I figure I'll be getting back into the woods in the near future, too. Easier to do that in the cold, anyway.

I'm so far behind
There's a small craft advisory for tomorrow, which means it's gonna be windy as fuck. Sunny, though. I have delusions of 40 miles but I'll see how much the wind kicks my ass.

Fast average for just getting back on the bike. Holy shit. Sure the TT setup is faster, but whatever--that's fast.
Saturday was 20mph sustained winds w/ 35mph gusts and 37 degree temps. Thus, I was on the trainer. Did family shit today. If I can get my school shit done and the weather is 50 and sunny like it's supposed to be, I'll get out there on Tuesday and Friday.
Props to those who kicked ass over the weekend.

I had the first bike race of the year over the weekend. It was a great race, put on extremely well and the after party was great.
http://barry-roubaix.com/
My race was a different story, I did the 35mi race. It's labeled as a gravel road race, but with the cold there was very little gravel and mud just alot of ice and frozen mud. The forecast called for 40's and sun but ended up being a high of 29 and overcast. Around mile 8 I bit it pretty hard, bruised hand, skinned knee, cut shin, bent shifter/bars, rubbing rear brake and horribly bruised pride. There were people crashing all over.
I managed to finish the race in an embarrassing 2:40. But even after the bad experience I'm signing up for next year as a redemption race.
On a side note no matter how cold you are don't jump into a hot shower with embro cream on. LOL

Crashing in that kind of cold has to be miserable.
I slugged out a windy, 43 degree, 34 miles today. About 15 miles of it was pure headwind--thankfully on the way out and not on the way back. Struggling to hold 14mph--yay. The tailwind was religious after the turnaround.
I've got a lot of work to do before TT season starts up. I felt every one of my 190 lbs today. Stamina was decent, but nowhere near what it was last summer. Thankfully, I should be able to get it back quickly. Still want to be back at 185 ASAP.
BTW--the 700x25 Kenda Karvs that I mounted up to my old R500 wheels were fantastic for this loop. The roads are bumpy and covered in sand from the snow. The bit of extra width and the tread pattern were perfect. Hopefully this my lighter wheel/tire combo will feel faster...

Good LORD. Organized ride or out on your own?
41 miles yesterday. Had a run-in with a dude in a black Explorer. Loud words exchanged. I didn't die.
Doing 35-40 today unless I end up on the MTB. I have a loop now that combines my hilly singlespeed loop with a flat bike path. What sucks is, the slow avg speed of that hill loop is VERY hard to dig out of on the bike path. Looks like 15mph avg will be admirable and 16 will be blazing. We'll see how it progresses over the season...

had the day off work so me and a buddy went out to set a personal best for distance. had a nice headwind for the first 55 miles so that made it fun. it was real flat for the first 104 miles, then we started climbing and that pretty much toasted me. i was living on snickers bars for the last 20 miles lol heading out on the mtb here in a few hours. see how the legs feel lol

Man. I don't know how you go that fast in a headwind. 18 of today's 40 was in a headwind and I was struggling to even hit 15mph. I was thinking about your ride on my ride today and thinking "that dude needs to consider going pro" but then I figured the pros are on an even crazier level.
So do you wear a camelbak on a ride like that or are there plenty of places to restock food/water? Nice thing about the cooler weather is that there's 50% of the hydration requirement.

Took the singlespeed out for a quickie this afternoon on the regular 17-mile loop.
What started as a sunny 58 degree ride degraded to a 45 degree thunderstorm at the absolute furthest point out--in a half hour. The wind was so bad at one point, it almost blew me off of the road.
Got home after a LOT of swearing. The cotton windbreaker I had on weighed about 8lbs at that point and much of me was numb. Yay New England.

26 mile solo ride on Saturday, 30 mile group ride (MS25, which turned into 30) yesterday. Got up @ 6AM, drove an hour south, shoved off @ 9AM. Nice ride.

Your average speeds are madness.
On the Sunday ride, I was standing in my bathroom at 6AM, looking at the hourly weather on my phone, debating whether or not I was gonna go back to bed. It was 45 and sunny by 9AM and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Chatted with a dude who happened to be from my town and he's thinking of organizing a local group ride.
I have time tomorrow to bomb through my regular 17.5 mile loop. I'll see how fast I can get my average speed.

Amazing how much more aerodynamic a jersey is compared to a fleece shell. I had a bitch of a headwind on the way out and I was moving a lot faster. The way back was nice and speedy. I parked nearby (maybe .3 miles away). Measured from the path parking lot round trip, it was 58:35.
The mapmyride time is from that shopping plaza lot round trip to the path lot. Decent time, considering I struggled to break the 1 hour barrier for a long time last year. I watched the Paris Roubaix on my DVR, so I had more stoke. I also had nato's beast-ness in my head.

nice job man!!
had 3rd mtb race today. 17 miles. hurt today. had a 1 mile, 8% grade cat4 climb about 1.5miles from the start. had to do 3 laps of a 5.5ish mile lap. i raced men cat2 age19-29. was 30 starters. had to work for it today. the hill was a BITCH but i hung within the top 10 on the first lap, making my way up. i held 3rd for a while until the last lap when 2 guys passed me on the climb, i caught them on the downhill where we had a nice 3/4 mile sprint to the finish. hit 197bpm on the sprint. got the one guy and finished 4th. the winner was 2 minutes ahead, 2-5 was spread by 12 seconds and 3-5 was spread by 5, so it was a awesome finish. the rest of my team got a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 18th and 22nd, so we had a awesome day. heres a podium shot of me. i look like a fat kid next to all the beanpoles lol

Rock and roll. Maybe one day I'll get faster.
I've got a new attitude with my singlespeed--really charge the hills and sprint up them. Hoping that will increase my overall speed after awhile.
MS150 is right around the corner and I have delusions of being better than mid-pack this year. Likely won't TT 'til early July because of a night class getting in the way.
