Yep. It worked well last year. I'm hoping to ramp it up this year (as it's 45 and rainy out today ). I'd like to get used to hammering the hills on my SS.

Those MTB pics are fantastic. Great photographer.

had another race today at Fairhill in elkton, md. 2nd stop in the MASS series. fast race course, good for roadies. last year this was my first CAT2 race and i got my ass kicked and got 26th. distance 15 miles. 2 laps of a 7.5 mile course. finished 2nd but boy was i smoked. time was 1 hr 1 minute,, avg speed 13.57 mph average heart rate was 185bpm!!!! with a max of 196. i could see first the whole time but couldnt close the gap, lost by 40 seconds. awesome awesome race. heres some shots from my friends wife phone. professsional photos to follow. this puts me at #1 in the MASS series standings for CAT2 men 19-29 year olds woot! this also lets me put in a optional upgrade to CAT1 then the next step is Pro.

podium! yolo!

hurting pretty bad, climbed this long hill at 191 bpm

somewhere...

Pfft--I'm at 193 at the moment. I inadvertently put on 7 lbs of muscle weight in the past 3 months during that fitness study I did (more on this in a later post). My TT weight was 185 last summer, so the extra weight won't help me in the climbs. Hoping to ditch more of the belly. I'm still trying to lower carb intake while having enough fuel in the tank to ride.

Did 32 on Friday, 40 on Saturday, hoping to get out for a quick 18 tomorrow.

The weather was finally nice enough to get outside and get a decent ride in this weekend.

I took this picture while taking a break...

extra weight wont help, but the extra power might even it out! and it will help with TT speed! i ran 4.3 miles last night and now my legs are so sore i wont have a productive ride today now lol

Power seems to be good, but I definitely want to drop 5-7 lbs.

I rode one of my loops (the one I posted here a little while back) at a decent clip. Did 17.5 miles in 57:45. If I'm doing this at the beginning of the season, things might bode well. We shall see.

I got 281 miles in for April.

Respectable run on a partially amended version of my hill loop. 14.91 miles in 58:32. I was charging the climbs and felt decent doing so. Happy about that.

Harassment of the day came in the form of a car full of high school kids at the top of a climb. Dude in the passenger side says "nice ass, man" (which is baffling--mind you, I wasn't kitted up--I was in a t-shirt and MTB shorts) and didn't anticipate the stop sign that they were about to hit. Knee jerk, all I thought to say was "wow--that was REALLY gay" as he was astonished that his car had stopped. I thought of a million other comebacks after the fact, but he looked like a douche to his backseat chick co-occupants, so I guess it's a small victory.

WTF is it with animosity toward bikes???

I've made the "I hope they get stuck at the light" sprint a couple of times, but I'm usually too far away.

I've experienced a LOT more animosity this season than I have in years past--and it's only May.

Hard earned 3rd today at Iron Hill. 16 mile race. shot myself in the foot on the start and went into the single track in about 12th place, worked like hell to pass as many people as i could on the first lap. i must have worked my way to 1st becuase i was caught by 2 guys at about 1.25 laps in and us 3 hung together until about 2.5 laps out of 3 until i started sliding off the back on the middle climb. then we hit lappers and apparently "passing on left" means that the person being passed should move left. got held up a bit and couldnt catch back on. finished 1 minute behind first, and 40 seconds behind 2nd. solid day. ill take it. 16 miles, 1 hour 30 min, 181 avg hr, 10.7 mph avg. 4 races, 4 podiums so far this year

thanks man! base miles really paid off. last year i didnt start riding until april and this year, i had 120 hrs in already. im trying to win the Mid-Atlantic Super Series title for cat2 19-29 year olds. so far i had a 4th, 2nd and now the 3rd so im consistent. im leading the points as of now. next race is going to be another tough one, lots of rocky climbs. id say im an above avg climber, but i just lack a little on the real skinny guys. i was 163 this morning and the guys that are beating me on climbs are twigs. if i could get to 155 id be golden

My "climbing weight" last summer was 185 Dragging 191 up the hills at the moment.

Thus my slowness compared to these 150-170lb riders. That said, I'm a decent climber, IMHO. I crushed a few climbs on Saturday's 35-miler. \:\)

1/4 mile from finishing today's 30 miler, punctured my 3-ride-old $65 rear Bontrager R3. FFFFFFFUUUUUU

Small puncture and a big cut that didn't puncture through yet. I've been doing most of my miles on my old wheels with the Kenda Karvs on them, so I've barely used my Ultegra wheels with the R3's.

I know the bike snob elite frowns upon patching tire cases, but this one is too new to ditch.

rough race today.real rocky course today. was leading about 2 miles in, pedal struck a rock and went over the bars, landing on rocks on my hip, that i broke back in sept, and my knee. got up only losing like 3 spots and started pedaling. leg was completely numb. couldnt clip in with my left foot. looked down, carbon pedal snapped in half. FUCK. cant feel right leg. FUCK. well i kept riding and finished the race, somehow got 11 out of 13 while riding 14 miles with 1 foot clipped in lol now im back to not being able to walk. hooray!

Yesterday I finished the Almanzo 100. Took me 10 hours. 6300 feet of climbing. 105 miles of gravel roads, on my 40 pound Surly Troll. When the pain in my hands and legs subsides, I'll likely say it was the most fun I've had on my bike. But today there is no doubt in my mind that the Almanzo race was the single hardest physical event I've ever put my body though.

That is NUTS. So cool. Why on a 40lb bike, though? Seems like that would beat the shit out of you even more. I'll have to google that race. 10 hours is a crusade.

No racing, but I did a flat 44 on Friday and a hilly 39 on Saturday. Felt pretty strong climbing on Saturday. This might be a good omen. \:\)
