Full report, lol dael with it.
Novice group, field of 17. about 9 members on one team, 3 on another, about 4-5 unaffiliated riders. One other NOOB like me. Most others seemed like they'd been doing most the season (weekly series). Nerves high.
Dead flat course, high 70s, low wind, glare was an issue due to late evening. 1.8m road race corse, back third had chicanes.
General vibe: Way scarier than CX. The speed, the closeness, the movements, the jockeying. I thought I'd be unflinchable, as for some reason I ride close all the time. Like I'm just agro I guess. I'd also say it was slightly easier in total, maybe due to short duration (6 laps,11.8mi for novice)
For first 1-2 laps I was towards upper 3rd, slowly got forced back by team dynamics. However by lap 4 the movements got increasingly erratic as people got tired and more aggressive. The large team was mostly functioning as a team, except for their weaker third. Despite still feeling mostly good I was slowly dropping back as I kept getting out of aero advantage. However I felt good and we were still a single pack. Last lap (6) on 1.9mi course and I didn't like my position so I worked myself up 2-3 spots before sharp corners. On corners the group started to split to 2 On sharp corners I did a couple inside passess to get to lead of rear group. Taking wind to face, but saw open field/no traffic through last corner. That set me up for a lot of speed on back .5mi sprint.
Luckily I make some power, despite having shitty aero(28mm tires on stock set-up gravel grinder, discs brakes, etc). Passing I mentally heard "grab a wheel" shouted by the team's coach. I'm thinking, give it a try...lol with about 150m to go I'm running out of steam. Deep onto hooks (back flat, maybe), powering still in saddle(Should I have risen?), I can hold speed but i"m not gaining much, can see there's no way I'll close last 10m on next guy so I let myself enjoy my pace.
Finished 3rd out of field. Like I said, last 1/2 lap I went from tail to that position. I should have made a move a little sooner. While my cornering is solid enough to made the moves I did I spend excess energy as the pack spread out in the corners and I was moving positions. I'm lucky I'm more powerful than this group. That said, my strategy for laps 1-4 was solid. A little better strategy at end and I could have move to vying for first.
Next year maybe cat 5?
sounds like a successful first step into racing, nice job! i take it this wasnt a USAC sanctioned race though if you were in novice? cat5 usac race will def be faster...idk what your avg was but all my cat5 races were around 21ish avg. sounds like your rode fairly well tactically overall too. at your level its definitely scary since everyones bike handling usually sucks! lol
also, yes, sprint in the drops and not sitting and cat 5 this year

USAC? not sure, it was OBRA sanctioned.
Strava reports 23.1mph average with max of 30mph(not bad on a gravel grinder on 28mm rubber) Sounds like I should have gotten my ass up for more power. I think I'm about to run out of gearing(I hate RPMS while standing)

I've been reading some of those articles, one thing I think they're not picking up is the transmission of power. large volume tires act as a shock in all directions. Imagine a wrinklwall. Not saying we're literally doing that, but that's why smaller tires FEEL so quick. They transmit power more directly. But the trade off is they transmit road noise back as interference.
Most those studies focus only on rolling resistance I feel like.
I stand while accelerating most the time, but when I'm already at 23 in the drops, I don't stand to accelerate more. But 0-20 I tend to stand. SOunds like I need to practie standing in the drops more. Not sure my gearing, I'll go check. Between "gravel grinder", and since it came with 30mm tires I think they went shorter gearing since taller tires.
Yeah, not sure as I understand OBRA has reciprocation with USAC, but I guess maybe only for classes they share?

nothing wrong with 28's! i race on 25mm gatorskin hardshells lol been reading articles lately where the science says higher volume road tires at lower pressures are faster than low volume tires at high pressure anyways. nice job!
Neat stuff here about rolling resistance of different brands/setups: http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/

Thanks for the link, so I flipped through that.
Regardless, it's good knowing that my Conti 4-seasons are one of the best rolling tires with such high puncture resistance. That backs up the anecdotes and is why I got them (for century, commuting, casual rides and last racing).
I could be wrong, but it sounds like tests all widths on 1 rim width. That seems like that could cause considerable variances too. I get that in one sense it's single variable, but it ignores the confounds.
All in all, great info for a data geek like me. Realistically it sounds like type of tire(Race vs touring) is the biggest factor, followed by quality(contis are never bad) within type, followed by size & pressure.

I'm in steamboat springs this weekend doing a stage race. Yesterday was a 13mile TT. Steamboat is at 6600ft FYI. I avg. 25mph on my road bike with just zipp 404s and sworks evade aero road helmet coming in 35/42. My time would have put me 7th as a cat 5.. And I'm a cat3... Our winner would have been 12th pro.. Today was a 77 mile road race. Here's my FB post about how it went.
Today's mantra for the road race was " I don't quit when I'm tired, I quit when I'm done" Today was one of the top 3 hardest races I've done. Got popped off on first climb 8 miles, solo chased for 20 miles into a headwind in open fields before being caught by a 3 man chase group of 2 teammates and another. From there we rode together, me and the other guy not doing jack shit, for about 19 miles until we hit 3 categorized climbs in a row at around mile 50,where I rode away from my chase group and was solo from about 53 miles to the finish, picking off two more guys along the way. I also got rained on twice, sliced my finger on a safety pin, dodged cows in the road, saw a rattlesnake, got a sick tan, stopped on a climb due to cramps and super tucked a lot. 77miles, 6500climb, 4hrs 12min, 18.2mph avg. WHEW!

a lot of the roads we raced on sat for the road race were part of the usa pro challege. if you watch from 5:30 through the next 20-25 min, you can see the back to back to back 1-1.5mi climbs we had to do 50mi in

i did 190 for 33 min at mtb nationals back in '14, my teeth ached afterwards. same result for the TT lol i need to get a power meter for the new bike, no way did i do 248 watts in the tt I'm noticing that Strava is very generous at higher speeds, and has no settings for aero. I was noticing that people with the same speeds with a power meter record much lower watts than those without.
