Nothing crazy, I just want to start running again when the weather is nice outside.
Today was my first attempt in 2013, after minute number 6 or 7, my left knee started to hurt. I had to slow down to walk it off for a minute \:\(

I was wearing a jumper knee strap that I used for basketball. I didn't run too far, probably ran 3 miles this morning.

What should I do if the knee consistently giving me pain?

Well, I'd say 3 miles is WAY too far to go after a 1 year break. Should have started with maybe a mile and some walking.

Otherwise, I'm bad to ask, since I shelved running after my knee started bothering me too consistently. I'd love to try it again, but maybe after the MS150.

Den't run through a sharp pain, esp in knee. SOmething's up.

Striking funny? shoe problems?

My general advice is small, lighter strides. Take more of them with lighter footfalls.

But take it easy, if you've hurting, like actual pain(not subtle aches/soreness) after 1 mile, going 3 is dumb.

I didn't run through the entire 3 miles, when i felt pain i stopped running and walked till the pain went away.

I will try the lighter strides next time I run (tomorrow). I am a pairs of 3 years old Brooks running shoes, I have a pair of brand new Nike Free Run waiting on deck.

I'm all for listening to your body but there are going to be aches and pains sometimes, especially when coming back from such a long break.
I would maybe try to hit a track or something, somewhere with a softer surface and do a couple miles of run a lap then walk a lap.

This. some aches are ok, but pain is not ok. Knee pain aint nothin to fuck with. Take some time, ice/ibuprofen or aleve, and dont rush back in.

I swear by the 10% rule. dont increase by more than 10% on a given run or week from your longest. All my injuries are from overtraining, getting eager, jumping in too fast.

Thanks for the advices everybody!

For running shoes, is there a life span when I should thrown the shoes away after X years?

Shoes are more about mileage than years. Have they seen a lot of use?

I use the current running shoes at the gym to workout.
but in terms of actual running mileage, probably 50-75 miles or so.

Most shoes are good for 3-400 miles, you should be fine, I had a pair of brooks pure flows that I put 620 miles on.
The only thing I would be concerned about is if they are the right shoe for how you run.

werd. get a new pair every 3-400 miles.

i recently developed some soreness around my knees. saw a chiro and turns out it was some sort of tendonitis as a resulting from having tight quads. stretch it out and you should be back no prob.

if you're flat footed like most asian, nike Frees are horrible for you to run in. i bought a pair to wear casually and my chiro told me i should NEVER exercise/run in them because of my foot, and if i want to join the barefoot/minimal movement, he'll put me on a program to learn how to run properly.

I went out for another run today for roughly 22 minutes total, pain/aches didn't come back *knock on wood*

As for flat footed, yes I am pretty sure I have flat foot. I guess the Nike Free Run will be my new going out/casual shoes.

I am hoping I can train my stamina and I can sign up for a future 5K event. I did one back 2-3 years ago and I think it took me a little under 30 minutes to complete.

Heres a tip...dont train with the intent of signing up.
Sign up and then train, you will be committed and will have more motivation.

from what i understand, you're fairly active. you don't need to train for a 5k.
in the words of Nike, just do it.

Knee pain may be from poor form caused by weak hips. I got some knee pain halfway into my marathon training last year. I started doing some side planks, leg lifts and other hip exercises and the pain went away. This may or may not be your problem, but it wont hurt to try.

Appreciated the suggestion, I will definitely try that.
I know I don't have the strongest hips and legs for sure
