I trained with straps on the other day, I immediately noticed soreness in my back but I think that probably also had to do with the stomach flu I contracted. Just something as small as straps can change what you're using/incorporating into the lift. And while his back is rounding it's ass off they are straight legged deadlifts, so as long as there is equal roundness it's not a huge deal. It'd be almost impossible to keep his back straight on sldl with a heavy load.
I only use straps for shrugs. Alternate grip for deads seems to work good for over 400 lbs, though as reps go up, I do tend to think about it too much.
Standard grip seems to go away in the 300+ range, depending on the number of reps, of course, I don't drop the weight and reset, I lightly touch the floor and go back up.
I never used an over under grip... While its not likely to result in a bicep injury the risks are far greater vs double over...
I'm not planning on entering any raw PL comps anytime in the future so grip strength is not paramount to me... Plus I get plenty of grip work on my "lighter" sets...

yeah totally bro! I know what you mean about the bicep thing. I've never ever felt any pain in my left arm from the under grip but I never grip and rip my deadlifts either, that's normally the leading cause... too much back weight shifts forward into the arms, too much hamstrings may cause you not to fully lock out. Always striving to just hit a nice moot point when watching/reviewing my lifts.

Double over for me. I've not needed straps since I did a HUGE reset a long time ago. My grip just came along with the DL, whereas before, I needed the straps because my grip was so far behind.
After this competition my plan is to go on a year long strength / bulk and add as much muscle as I can... I honestly think I could add a good 5lbs over that year...

The HCL didnt tear me up as bad as people say. I also did ease into it and turned it up over the course of a week and half. As a disclaimer i dont think i was low enough body fat wise to see the big gains that people have seen.
