I try to mix it up. Especially lately. Just updated my portfolio last week as a matter of fact.

I only like to take pictures of paintball. /not very diverse.
I do take pics of other things, but not really. I do like taking landscape photos, but besides that and paintball, I give no fucks really.
My GF on the other hand, she's good at taking pics of stuff. She's always just walking around taking pics of things and they come out good. Shit she cooks stuff just to take pictures of it. Me, I cook things to eat.

It depends on what your goal is. Do you want people to hire you to shoot? Then your portfolio needs to represent what you want to shoot, in your style. That's what personal projects are really important for. So I'm told. I have a wheeled things portfolio, cycling and motorcycle and car stuff, a still life-style (still life's but try to focus around lifestyle situations), and lifestyle. I need to work on creating more of those images, but they're good. Real situations sort of stuff, but not grab shots planned shots that look like grab shots of people having awesome times!
The guy that does p52 suggests you have 1-3 different categories, max of about 30 images in each, no images from the same shoot in the portfolio, different stuff, use seperate "story" portfolios for things like when I shot the cyclocross worlds, i created a special one for that that told the story of the event. I created another one for the series of strangers with bikes in street studios.
I obviously don't know how it's going to turn out, but what the guy says sounds legit

Do cat pics count?
Landscapes / Architecture / Birding / Weather & Astronomy
I like doing candid / portrait / street photography, but moved to the middle of nowhere last fall. Been meaning to try sports. There is a rodeo this weekend a block down the road but the weather sucks.

I dunno, I have an obvious emphasis on automotive, the personal section is where I put everything else. I like to think I have a good variety but I don't want to spread myself too thin.
I'm toying with the idea of adding another category, but I don't know what to call it. I've got a good amount of new portrait/fashion/beauty work and I kinda want that separated from my street photography and landscape etc... What would you guys call that new section, assuming I want to keep the "Personal" section labeled as such?

About 3 years ago, incredibly diverse. Now? Well, I need to rebranch since i've pretty much taken my personal photography to a photo booth business and nothing really makes sense anymore.
Once my hosting expires, I need to re-up to a plan that allows multiple domains and work on my branding for personal work vs. photo booth vs. etc.

I have trains mostly, as I accompany my friend on his trips to make Railfan DVDs. The steam trains are cool. I could take or leave the diesels, I dont know enough about them to tell what makes one different from the other, so I try to capture the area they're moving through rather than just the trains themselves.
I have a lot of birds. There's a dam by my house with a large bald eagle and heron population, so on my days off I go and photograph them.
The flowers in my gardens make nice subjects and have the added benefit of being right there for me to shoot on a few minutes notice.
I'd love to branch out some more. I am looking to do some coastal landscapes and lighthouses soon, and an Orioles game or two to put my 100-400 through its paces, but its hard to free up decent chunks of time to go out and shoot.
