So I went into this race with zero expectations after having a shitty training run the weekend before and the DNF at my previous 50k three weeks earlier. I decided to not really taper to much and ended up putting in about 32 miles the week before the race, all super easy though and felt really good. This was definitely the largest trail race I had been a part of, about 120 people doing the 50k and 80 doing the 50mile. Race start was 6am which I was super pumped about since we would be done before it got to hot hopefully and I was used to running at that hour for my training runs. I took my place towards the middle of the pack and headed out super easy, there was a pretty good hill at about .75 miles, I had run this part alot and dont have a problem running the entire thing but decided before the race I was going to walk a couple sections. I ended up running the beginning to get past some big groups that had slowed down and then I power hiked a few of the steeper sections. Felt great. The next 8 or so miles were awesome rolling single track, shady and super runnable... I settled in with a couple of other guys and just cruised. 10-16 or so was pretty consistent uphill, I felt great and my legs felt strong so I powered thru and ran the whole section without any problems. Had some nice flat and downhill after that till 22. 22-25 you have about a 1300 foot climb, I was expecting to do some walking but chugged thru the whole thing, still feeling great. I had one 20oz handheld with me and was filling it every aid station, alternating water and electrolyte drink, I think it was a good balance. I was also doing about 2 gu's an hour plus various snacks at most aid stations. It was starting to get really hot at this point and we were on some very exposed fire roads. I hit the last aid station at 27 and for the first time could really feel my legs barking at me. Filled my bottle super quick, sponge of ice water on my head and bounced. I started down the hill and the trail makes a hard right turn with another trail branching off to the right just before this turn, I had run this section many times but for some reason saw that first right hand turn and took it. I go about a tenth of a mile before I realize I am on single track and should still be on fire road, I slow a bit but keep moving. I finally stopped to wait for any other runners...no one! Fuck!! I chug back up the trail and get back on the trail...furious with myself. I know this trail, how could I have done this! I ended up running an extra .4 miles. I think though it gave me some boost because I blasted down the rest of the hill. The last 2 miles had some short but very steep hills, it was brutal to say the least, plus it was blazing hot at this point. I was passing this one guy with about a mile left and he was walking this hill and looked completely done so I slowed to check on him. He had been running with no bottle. I let him take a big swig from my bottle and bounced. Powered thru the finish to end up just under 4:50. This race definitely gave me a new respect for the 50 mile distance, I am going to try and do 3 or 4 more 50k's this summer and get more comfortable with it and see how low I can get my time before I move onto anything else. To me it seems like th perfect distance, hard enough that you hate life at the end but I was really able to enjoy myself for most of it. I ended up 6th overall out of 120 and 1st in 30-39 age group, completely unexpected. I think alot of the strong runners my age were doing the 50 miler, but hey...I'll take it.
