Ok so IS makes a lens more hand-holdable, allowing sharp pictures at slower shutter speeds. BUT bigger apertures allow faster shutter speeds which helps stop motion both at the photographer end and the subject end. So assuming you're not worried about DOF, a wider aperture (2.8 vs 4, or 4 vs 5.6, etc) is more valuable than IS. .... Or maybe just wider aperture is better indoors and for sports photography, since stuff like landscapes where you WANT a high DOF you'll be shooting at wider apertures anyway but you'll want the hand-hold-ability?

?

I'm probably not buying a lens for a while and don't necessarily have any specific lenses in mind, just something I've been mulling over lately.

IS doesn't help when your subject is moving. Shutter speed does. This is why high-ISO-capable bodies are so highly sought after too.

There's a time and place for both a wider aperture and IS, but I'll take wider aperture over IS most times.

Lenses with a wider aperture also tend to perform better when stopped down. They also work better with teleconverters if you ever need the distance.

IS is more of a convenience / enhancement for hand-holding shots.

Speaking of high ISO. Canon is screwing around with a sensor 7.5 times more powerful then the one in the 1DX right now.

I wouldn't expect to see it in consumer cameras anytime soon, but crazy to know what is down the pipe.

IS/VR is a great feature, but I don't look for it when buying a lens. I'd rather have a wider aperture first and IS/VR as a supplemental benefit.

That said, I have VR on my 24-85 and have grown to love it.

i went from 35/1.4 to a 35/2 IS because of video. i'm jealous that Sony's have built in IS in the camera body

It is nice not having to pay extra for it in the lenses. But as I have read, there is a trade-off. At longer focal lengths, the in body stabilization hits its limits and isn't as effective as it is in the lens.

how much longer are we talking before it begins to diminish?

I was basing that from what I read here...

http://photographylife.com/lens-stabilization-vs-in-camera-stabilization

It is a decent article. Then I just read this in the comments...

Hi Nasim
I would like to point out a few things
The Sensor stabilization can very well stabilize long focal lengths. It was calculated by Michael Hohner that for a 600 mm the movement would be ~ 1mm on the sensor under extreme conditions.
Some old Minolta documents state that the system cam move 11mm on diagonal or ~4mm on each axis, so more than needed. Some claim that the system is not as good as lens IS because the camera should know the focal length of the lens. But all Minolta lens report their focal length even the first auto focus ones, one simple test for this is to look in the picture extif.
The same goes for focusing distance that is important for macro lens.
So the argument that Sensor IS is not capable of stabilizing long focal lengths is a myth.
I would also point out a deficiency of the Sensor IS that was not mentioned.
Sony has bought types of stabilization Sensor IS for the Alpha SLR and Lens IS for the NEX.
The reason for this is that the Sensor IS can not be used very effectively for movies. It is technically possible as you can see in A33; A55 and others but it heats up quite quickly. This is the reason the A77 uses software stabilization for the movie mode at the expense of a slightly increased crop factor.
The bottom line is that I don’t think there is a big difference if at all, for photography between the two systems as some suggest.
But for movies the lens IS is better.

lol if what he says is true then that should not be such a large issue.

How's this working out for you? The writeup at the digital picture (and everywhere else) seems to give the 35 f2 IS an incredibly favorable review, and the price is a lot more reasonable from what I can tell.
