Should I be sending them the edits + the RAWs? I'm having a few photos published in Outdoor Canada in their spring issue, and don't know if I should do either or both. The edits look WAY better, but is that something I should leave up to the editors themselves?

Send what you want shown, and don't give up the raw files

And congratulations! That's awesome!

Thanks man, it's nothing crazy like cover but a few shots for a spring article. I'm pretty pumped.

Wow! That is cool! Congrats! Can you give us a preview of the pics?
And how does one get their pic published? Do you just send samples based on the genre of the publication?

I won't know until it's published which pics they've chosen, they are all from my Sutton River trip last year however.

For this article, I actually met the senior hunting editor who was writing the article ON my trip (We had the same flyout date). He took a look at my pics, and asked if he could use them in his article Really nice guy who has put me in touch with the right people.

As far as other magazines, I've submitted a bunch of DVDs for them to use at stock photography.

Depends on the publication. The one I shot for Nate required TIFF files, edited or not (was up to me).

Just received an update from the magazine, they require both (edited and RAW files). I guess I got my answer.

huh. that's interesting. i wouldn't be comfortable with that, because they're not going to present the file the way you want, which is how you edit it.

Well it's really up to them on which one they choose, but the edits are way way better then the RAWs.. I'd be extremely surprised if any un-edited RAWs made it into print.

PS: usually people will ask for RAW files if they plan to use the images in multiple ways, so make sure you get paid properly according to how they will use the images over time. Sometimes they just want RAW files because their boss told them to ask for them, or if this is the first time they've worked with you.

Also, it's worth noting that lots of jobs on a higher level are done by just handing over drives with RAWs to the client at the time of shooting, unless you are being contracted to do the post production as well as the shooting.

this makes sense...

any sort of contract granting them specific usage rights?

I have a question along these same lines:

Some wedding pics I took are being published in a bride book next month. I really want some cut sheets for my portfolio. How do I go about requesting those? Is that something they'll give me if I just ask. This is not paid work (I know, I know!), so I don't know how much leeway I have to ask for anything.

It would be wise to have one, but you should just ask them about it in am email first before sending a contract over. That tends to freak people out.

Getting a tear sheet is easy, email the art director or photo editor. Or editor in chief if you can't find the contact for the other people. There's no reason why they won't hook you up unless they are complete lazy assholes.
