Love 80's GTI's, hate all other VW's. Honestly, I love the car when it isn't broke. I hate working on it though, it's all so fucking dinky and half-assed. And a friend sent me this pic on fb: And instead of thinking "Hey, an exploded pile of shit", I thought "Damn, I wish we got the four door Mk II GTI in the US". I think I've been thoroughly infected.
that was my desktop wallpaper for a long time years back
i ran a fair amount of toe-out on my mk2. turn in was super quick but it chewed up tires even quicker.

I really enjoy driving the little pos, but I can't help think that I'd have my Alfa on the road with all the money I've put into it. Somebody left a note on the VW yesterday asking if I wanted to sell it and it dawned on me that I'd have to get $2k for this rusty, beat up 8v GTI to feel ok walking away from it and nobody in their right mind would pay that much up front. I guess we're stuck with each other.
I really think that depends.
I got $750 for a MK1 Jetta GLI last year. It needed work, the windshield leaked like crazy, it had a few rust holes, and some other odds and ends that needed fixed. 2k for a MK2 with a lot of stuff fixed seems reasonable, at least on the East Coast.

Just rattle can the bumpers flat black. They'll look great.

Ok, I think I can admit that that was a fail. Sure the can easily flowed enough for a 1.8 8v, but it gets tiresome and because of the size of the can and the shape of the underbody, it was set far enough forward that fumes were coming into the car. So fail all around then.
Spent 2 months trying to track down one of the last POS Walker stock replacements with no luck (which was good luck really) and instead found a cheap, nos Bosal stock 16v muffler. I'll put it on this weekend. Might even replace the sunroof seal if the exhaust goes easily enough.
