we have a pm feature you know ... And my inbox is stuffed with messages from your mom so this thread: love it or leave it PS: Ampsman, you don't have him listed but Miguel Heras is running too. And I know Anna Frost is back in the US, so maybe team Salomon will just show up and surprise everyone tomorrow
ya...I know they have been in the bay area on some promotional tour, I dint see her name on there though. Isnt adam campbell on team solomon?

Yep, so that's two at least. And while we're swapping info, is Killian running anything this year? or is he exclusively peak bagging for his Summits project?

They just posted his schedule somewhere...ill try to find it. It was pretty much all euro stuff...maybe one Us stop. It seemed like he was maybe done because he kinda has the mentality of moving on after he conquers something...but I guess he will do some more races.

Oh, Dean. I have a lot of mixed feelings and opinions about him, but I'm glad you got to meet your hero (nohomo) And congrats to Sage Canaday on crushing an über competitive field this year. He made up ~13 minutes on 2nd place Cameron Clayton in the last 19 miles! Yeah yeah, I know all the "purists" out there think he's grandstanding or not keeping ultrarunning underground enough, but who fucking cares. The guy is inspiring and motivating more people than some dirtbag from Boulder ever will.
I'm glad he's out there inspiring people, but a course cutting cheater is not the sort of ambassador for the sport I'd choose if it were up to me. I'm glad guys like Kilian Jornet and Scott Jurek are starting to get some recognition. It takes some of the sting out of Dean Karnazes drowning in sponsorship money and recognition for his stunts around the globe.
I think Krupicka said it best when he said:
But back to Dean, if I were going to be completely candid, I’d have to say that he doesn’t even do the same kind of sport I do.
but yeah, glad you got to meet him

In the end it doesn't really matter to me. I love all the characters in this sport, but he's the guy that helped me change mine for the better.
And this is where I've sort of landed on the issue myself. We can sit here all day and trade opinions on how he approaches the sport, markets himself, etc but in the end he's out there inspiring people to get outside and get active and that's awesome.
With that said, I'm still going to share the backstory to my cheater comment because I think it's entertaining and I don't throw around accusations like that lightly.
Last September I ran the North Face Endurance Challenge - Madison 50 miler. Dean was there signing autographs, presenting awards, etc and he was the one with the microphone counting us down to the start. I head out in the front 25 runners or so while Dean's still on the microphone. The course includes a huge out and back section, so huge that everyone on the course passes each other. The DFL runner is going to be on this section before the leader clears it going the other way so everyone sees everyone else out there. The course also has two timing mats at miles 9.7 and 40.2.
I get to the aid station at 40.2 and while I'm grabbing some food I see Dean sitting behind the table with a hat on and his head sort of hung low. He's a pretty easy guy to spot though so I know it's him and I say "oh hey Dean! What's up?" thinking he's just hanging out at the aid stations to encourage runners or something and he says "hey man, you're looking strong and having a great race! Keep it up!" and I say "thanks dude, see ya" and that's it. The timing mat is a few yards outside the aid station as you run back towards the finish.
It was the only time I saw Dean on the course and the thought that he was running the race never crossed my mind. I continue to have a fantastic race and finish 14th, never seeing him again out there. Afterwards I just hung out enjoying the day with some friends, including the 3rd place female. Now she ran all the TNF EC races last year as a fundraiser for MS research so she was on a panel with Dean the night before, knew him from other events, etc. She also saw him after the race when she went up on stage to collect her 3rd place award. After she collected the award she mentioned something about Dean having a great race today, considering the circumstances. This was a surprise to me so I asked her what she was talking about. She said that Dean told her he was feeling under the weather but wanted to run the 50 to get a Western States qualifier done this year. When she collected her medal she asked how his run went and he said "great! Finished in 8:12 and got my qualifier done". I told her there must be some mistake because we never saw him on the course and if he finished in 8:12 we would've seen him near the turnaround (I finished in 7:47, her in 7:57 so in theory Dean wouldn't have been too far behind us at mile 28, but the out in back is so long we should've seen him somewhere).
So I go to the results tent and pull up the live results and sure enough, Dean is listed as finishing in 8:12, good for 23rd place. One of my friends who was crewing all day then said some aid station volunteers were talking about him out there and saying "WTF happened? He came in with one group and then jumped a ton of people before coming back through".
A couple days later his 23rd place became a DNF on the online results. His splits are still listed on the results page and they paint a very telling story as well. He came through 9.7 miles in 1:50, which is around 110th place, then he comes through 40.2 in 6:28. His split to go from 1:50 to 6:28 was as fast as the guys in the top 10, and then his time between 40.2 and the finish was down around average for 50th place runners. So what happened? He goes out super easy and his 9.7 mile split shows this. Waits for the top guys to pass him going the other way and then turns around and just follows them (I was running around 18th at that point and I never saw him, so he turned around somewhere before I passed him going the other way). When he gets back to the aid station he sits down before the mat because he knows he has to wait awhile to avoid having an impossible split time. Even after sitting there a while (he left 7 minutes after I did) his split is stupid fast. Then he jogs the last 10 miles to the finish at a mid pack pace again. It's almost funny how out of whack his splits are: he "finished" in 23rd place and the people who legitimately finished around him went through 40.2 10-15 minutes after him. So he was running slow enough to lose 10-15 minutes in 10 miles to those finishing near him on the list.
I guess you could give him the benefit of the doubt and say he cut the course, ran across the finish line, told people he finished and had a good race before quietly telling the RD that he actually DNF'd some time later but that doesn't really add up in my book. And even if that were the case, you don't DNF from a race by running the course with your number attached and cross the finish line. Because it happened that way the true age group winner, who finished 4 minutes after Dean, was (presumably) awarded 2nd place on race day and the rightful 3rd place finisher just missed the podium. That sucks
So while I'm glad that he's out in the world inspiring people (and I do believe he's a positive force in this world) that whole experience really left me soured on the guy.
