okay so this has been the topic of discussion for a while and i said i would post pics of some of the shit i do at work, so here you guys go.
I actually borrowed the company owners camera and they emailed the pics to me heh.

All welds were done in position and by procedure using Hobart Fabco XL-71 0.045 fluxcore wire.

2 pass uphand connecting a 1" plate to a 3/4" plate

2 pass uphand connecting a 2+1/8" SCH160 pipe to 1" plate

another 2 pass uphand connecting a 3/8" wall 8x6 square tubing to a 1/2" plate. also shows a circle i freehand cut with a torch (1+1/2" tip oxy acetalyne)

one of the 2+1/8" sch160 pipes welded over another weld, on the left you can see where i didn't chip the flux off the one weld. all are uphand 2 pass welds.

the blue helmet is my flip lid helmet, on the right is my auto darkening helmet, the pole sticking up out of the center of the deck is where my suitcase wirefeeder hangs from. in the background is a truck that is nearly complete.

another angle of the deck i'm working on right now, in the absolute foreground on the left is my ugly homemade tool (it's a tack bar, hammer, pry bar, and chisel all in one, and yes i know it's fucking ugly but it works!!! haha) behind that you see a bessey clamp, and the blue thing behind that is our 500 ton press/brake.
above the deck you can see 2 of the 3 winches that are going on my truck (the one in the background only has 1 winch, so as you can imagine my truck is a fuck of a lot bigger haha)

in this fuzzy ass pic you can see a winch tractor being stripped for its new bed which is being built on the side of the shop that is not shown in the pics. you can see my toolbox, my work bench, and one of the welders behind the truck.

hope you enjoyed the pics. i'll try to get more as we progress on to the more showy stuff like the tig welds on the toolboxes and shit.

i guess i'll open the floodgates to any questions or comments or if other fabricators want to post pics or tips they are welcome to as well.

Doesn't seem mine turn out quite as nice....alot of splatter and little holes...when using mild steel (exhuast/ic pipe)

Btw, thanks for the pics.....!!!

fabco XL-71 doesn't act the same as the fluxcore wire you use with your 110v hobby welder, it needs about 350amps and 28 volts to run properly, it also needs shielding gas. once you have that it acts just like ER7018 stick rods, except that it fills up a little faster. as you proceed upwards in the weave you fill one side, move across and fill the other side, then move up the width of the wire (yeah up 0.045") then over again before the puddle solidifies.

do you care if I take some pics from my work and post them?
I do welding and fabrication of hot rods and race cars as well as industrial. I'd say 85% of the welding I do is TIG the rest mig. We weld titanium, aluminum, stainless, chrom-moly, ect.

Oh, ok, that explains alot...I was looking @ the pics and was thinking to myself it looked shielded.....lol...

I really need to get a gas tank as I already have the adapters and such....

I would like to see someone put out a DIY topmount kit. I have seen log style manifolds released this way.

Includes the collector/flanges and precut pieces, just needs welded.

I would be highly interested in that.

adam: for what it's worth, vibrant makes collectors and flanges and piping, you could buy a collector, flanges, and piping and voila a DIY kit.

lol

That would help, however I would like to be lazy in the fact it would already be cut and ready to roll...

none of the DIY kits are pre-cut and ready to weld. you still have to cut shit down to fit.

fitup = 99% of welding/fabrication

Ok, I did not know that. I was under the assumption they were ready to go, like watercolors...1,2,3.....

It would be interesting for a company to put out a DIY manifold kit, and have it precut/filed/beveled and numbered w/instructions on what to weld first, second and so on..

B/c the welding/time is a good chunk of the labor charge...someone like full-race that can do all that w/machines..

Just an idea for those of us w/o a nice bandsaw

welding itself takes very little time actually, it's the prep and fitup that takes the most time. as i've said before fitup = 99% of welding/fabrication. if your fitup is good your welding will be easy and take very little time.

If anyone is in need and is a GB regular...

I would be happy to weld (mig) little pieces if they would of course cover s&h...

May not be worth while, but I thought I would offer.

here are some pics I just took. Kinda modifying my computer. took my stock Dell XPS 600, pulled it all apart cut windows out the side bottom and top than painted it with a metallic textured black paint. I than made 1/16" 304 stainless steel case for it. I punched holes in the one side with greenlee punches and flared them out and hemmed the edges. Also finished the top and back side piece today at work. It's one piece with a break in it and all the edges hemmed for a clean look. Need to cut a hole in the top for a 120mm fan and order some other goodies to get it closer to being finished. I'm going to be fabricating the fan holders and some duct work forthe case as well. Still need to make the front out of stainless and copper.

Stock Dell XPS 600 case

inside

chopped & painted with 2 led light strips and a black light in PSU

one side of the stainless case punched and flared

lights out

6" sch40 45deg weld elbow on to a 6" 150# flange (this is all we did today. the rest of the day was spent holding the table down)

tig root, 7018 fill & cap. roll welded.

backwelded tig root.

here's another thing that got built while we were waiting for jobs to come up. it's a stainless steel gate to go on a fence around a memorial on this guys homestead. just another fuckaround project, heh.

me putting a fill & cap on a piece of practice pipe. it's Alloy 20 pipe, 4" sch40 is worth $1000/ft. about $600 material in these pics. also the filler rod is $1000/tube for 3/32".

fill.

cap.

cap.

i burned the shit out of it with that cap, sugared to shit on the inside and it's dark as fuck on top. heh. getting paid to practice and fuck up expensive metals! w00t.

just a random tig bead i laid showing my dad my technique.

Over the winter I got myself gas for the mig.

Did a few pieces, mostly exhaust work.

I am going to build myself a catch can here in a few weeks, I'll post up the outcome..lol.
