Nice work Robby! We're pretty even aside from elevation.

Signed up for the leadville 100 lottery last night and kicked off 2017 with a bang!

That's awesome, off to a good start.

I took yesterday and today as a little downtime to relax and rest the legs up. Starting with one of the training plans tomorrow and a 20minute ftp test so I want to be fresh.

Worst ftp test of my life, my lungs are still hurting an hour later. Trainerroad calculated a 356W ftp from a 20minute test with a kurt kinetic. Really, really wish i had a real power meter to see how accurate the KK was.
Regardless training has begun, hoping to shoot for ~10hrs. per week.

damn dude thats strong, mine was 335 (353watts for 20min x.95) last year before my uci races. im scared to see what it is now, prob around 300. not sure if its the elevation or what... the speed is there and i can hang with our elite guys on climbs for a bit but my power is down. i have to do one here soon \:\( 10hrs is my goal too

nice job!

I averaged 375W for the 20 minutes. I think I could have done slightly better, the first 10 minutes I was pushing a cadence above 100 and doing a little too much anaerobic work. Dropped a gear at the midpoint and was able to slow the spin and my HR and push a bit more. I still don't trust the accuracy of the KK though, I don't think i'm actually that strong. As long as the numbers are precise from workout to workout that's all I care about though.

And i'm sure elevation plays a HUGE roll in your power output. I'd probably die if I tried to ride where you are lol

Week one in the bag, managed to reach my goal

THIS WEEK
344.7 km

10h 32m
0 m

Trainer rides greater than 2 hours are a real struggle for me. Motivation starts dropping off very quickly. Training plan i'm doing has a 2:45 and 3 hour ride scheduled for sundays, don't think those will happen.

I figured I'd come back from the dead just to check in. Nato has followed my exploits, but here's the nutshell and some pics.

I just missed putting in 2500 miles this year--I did 2428. Short cross races account for a lot of that total drop, tho. I rode my fastest century on 9/11 at 6:22 over 100.6 miles. 15.8 mph average. I've accepted that I'm not going to be all that fast over the course of a century.

Did a fair amount of MTB group rides over the summer.

Raced 7 cross races and a season of weekly Wed night practice cross races. I never expected to do that much cross, but a friend dragged me into it and I had a blast. I never came in last--usually top of the bottom quarter/third of the field (a single third-from-last when I had to reg Cat 3 tho) Just built a singlespeed to train on next season, in hopes of getting faster.

Pics:

So yeah, that was 2016. We'll see what 2017 brings. Good to see everyone hitting it hard.

yay gamby

looks like I ended up at 2279 miles biked, w/53k vert
not horrible I guess for what is ~33% of my total activities

I dont know if I got any faster. Possibly not, some empirical data on same-course races I've done suggest any conclusion I might want to entertain [faster/slower/no change] as different bike/different day things with being a less slow runner allowed me to either ease up or work harder on the bike legs depending on how I saw fit on that day or any particular race. Eg tough to compare a PR from one year of a bike leg where I blew up a bit on the run vs one where I did not.

I have a strava account but I don't use it. I'm still a mapmyride guy, because all of my stats are with them. I might start running them both tho. A bud that I ride with does that.

Good to see you did a century. \:\)

Week 2 complete with 12hr 20min. Not bad considering I got stuck working out of town 2 days this week.

Also found a 100mile mtb race in Michigan I was going to sign up for but it sold out the day before I found it \:\( It's tough finding long races that aren't more than a 4-5hr drive.

You got into leadville? Thats awesome. Its definitely a legendary race but from what i've read it's pretty much a 100 mile gravel grinder.

Thanks for pointing out the mohican, I think i'm going to sign up. I've been looking just in Michgan, didn't think there would be much in terms of mountain biking in Ohio.

thats nuts that you got into the front corral. They still break it down from there though right? I thought for leadville just a uci license doesn't get you to the front, you need to have raced it before and have decent times. regardless thats awesome.

I looked at the mohican a bit, looks like a good race but 750 riders is A LOT. If you don't start at the front, forget it. I watched some video from the 2016 and there is a singletrack stream crossing near the beginning and it's just a gong show. I don't like the type of races where slow people create huge bottlenecks for the fast people and completely screw the times up.

The race starts on road and you have a 200ft climb 1/4 mile in, the race will blow apart on that right away. After the hill it's a few miles of road. When I did it a peloton of 30 or so formed that I was in. Just get to the start early enough that you are close to the front and you'll be perfectly fine. You're fast enough you'll never have traffic problems.

186? What year did you do it? They cap it at 750 riders. Or was 186 the open male category, though that seems low.

Sweet. Doesn't look like this race sells out like some of the other popular 100 milers so I'm going to hang tight a bit before registering. I want to start my outdoor riding and make sure I have no injuries like I did late last season, especially since at $180US it is quite an expensive race lol $250CAN, don't want to have to back out and lose that cash.

Just added you on strava

Very nice! I'm jealous.

I ran into troubles this week, started getting really bad knee pain in my leg that I broke when I was younger. Tried powering through a couple rides this week but it was sharp pain, not the kind of dull pain you can usually power through. Leg has always given me problems because of the femur injuries in the past but this felt different. I've made an appointment at a sports physician out of town to get it checked out. This week has definitely had me feeling depressed, I feel like I've been working so hard for nothing. Going to try riding tomorrow and see how it feels but there is obviously some underlying issue that shows up when I start putting in more hours and power.
