My heart hurts after reading the car threads in Out There.

What have you driven lately? I test drove a 2004 M3 last Friday (not for me, rotary 4 life/50,000 miles) with the SMG transmission and I'm pretty sure I found my next car, whenever that time comes. That ITB I6 sounds wicked from the drivers seat and it's fun to rip off lightning quick shifts. I'll still get a manual because I think that the novelty wears off quickly with them fancy new trannies and I'll bet most people just leave it in auto mode most of the time.

What a drive. It hides the weight well, and there is power everywhere with a rush to redline that speaks to my boner. Not too much to find fault with, and on top of it all it had the best paint color of any BMW:

Bonus: this video is funny.

My mom is thinking about moving into a smaller house, which means no more 4 car garage, which means my Alfa project may finally die on the vine.

I haven't driven a fun car in 4 years and even then it was only a Nissan Maxima.

If I didn't have two motorcycles I'd kill myself

Well, at least she's only thinking about it for the time being. If it comes to that, your GTi isn't too shabby and is deserving of your enthusiast energy.

If I have to sell it, I'm throwing the proceeds at the VW - if I part it out I ought to be able to scrounge enough for a 1.8T.

I recently removed the CAI and Cobb AP from my Mazdaspeed3. It's amazing the difference $700 in mods makes to those things. Going backwards sucks, but compromises must be made if I want to keep the GSX from partout territory. I will be buying another Cobb AP when I have more money, it's literally night and day with how much faster and smoother it is with one in the car.

I like having a backseat and a trunk too much, otherwise I would probably still be in a Miata. There's no reason to get rid of my car, but that test drive brought out the new car hunger pangs. BMW knows what's up.

I don't really think I've driven a fast car before

I'll stick to high trq, low hp diesels.

Although my oldmans Duramax (500hp/900ftlbs) gets up and goes if the tires stick \:\) I like passing people with the 5th wheel and the boat attached.

Plus, even as a Z owner, I'm not afraid to say that the e46 m3 puts the HR Z to shame except for performance. m3s are just sweet cars. Every one I've driven has always given me goose bumps, and that includes the e36 back in the day...

I have those concerns and I would only consider the more solid '03+ cars. I DD a rotary, how bad could a BMW be? ;\)

LNXGUY - That's one way to never miss driving a fast car \:D

cliff - Definitely. I like 370s and HR 350s, but the M3 just does it for me in a way those cars don't. It's so good at everything.

I had convinced myself that I was happy with mid horsepower cars...that was until I drove my truck with the new 408. 500+ NA hp is a hell of a drug...

I finally had a chance to drag the GN outta hiding for one last pre-winter blast. Filled up the meth tank and spent a couple of hours leaving nice matching sets of black marks on almost every on-ramp within 10 miles of my house. Then I decided to give it a good wash, which went great until the battery decided to die. Ah well, I just jogged the mile or so to my house and got my jumper pack. Don't know yet if its battery or alternator, might not be till spring till I get it figured out.

But anyway, I love those outings in the GN because it reminds me how much fun the M3 is. The Buick's great for getting that hit of speed, but the bimmer's so much more fun to drive in every other possible situation. Except for trying to get laid, I suppose.

Mom just got a '10 C300 sport AWD. I've only sat in it and admired the interior, since it's unregistered, but I'm sure I'll get to play with it this weekend.
She actually found a nice one; It's arctic white with grey interior and has most options added. The only thing I'm not a fan of, is the center console. It's pretty blah, compared to the rest of the car. it's just this black rubbery crap, with little detail, and the display is about a foot away from the actual radio/Bluetooth.

Anyways, I'm excited to drive it, but I'm a little sad there's going to be one less Swede in the family pretty shortly.

too bad the e46 has always been so boring looking to me. great heart in it though.(but shitty sounding exhaust ) and obviously nice cars overall.

manual>smg

part prices for the e46 arent bad and really the only "extras" that are possibly expensive is the oil for that engine(10w60) and valve adjustments. the rest of it is fine. i wouldnt let out of warranty scare you if you can turn a wrench...not that it will necessarily need a lot. just keep in mind those cars are hard on bushings etc in that you cant leave them for 15 yrs like a honda and its still kinda ok.

if you do consider one just make sure you get it checked out(ppi) by a place that knows the cars. it could save you from buying something that needs everything replaced if it was neglected.

one that was cared for will be nice. plenty of examples of s54 going well north of 200k miles with no issues.

I thought this was just a general talk about cars, not E46 M3's specifically \:\) With that said, I have always, and probably will always want one. They are understated but so gorgeous in my eyes \:\)

AP already sold?

Yea, the AP sold in literally 10 minutes from the time I posted it, for $50 less than what I paid several months ago. I will get another, it's just such a smoother power delivery with that thing in place. I haven't sold the CAI and may not, they don't get much on the used market so it's really not worth me selling it.

I applaud BMW for using the I6, I feel they're under appreciated / under utilized. (at least in the U.S.A.)

My current fun vehicles /projects include:

71 Maverick Grabber - Looking to do a budget 351W build for now. 16 year project and counting.

99 Neon - current build: turblow, coilovers, kitchen sink. 12 year project and counting.

03 Honda 919 - Mainly just riding it while I work on the cars.

I'm sitting on the fence of whether to finish the Miata. $4-5K on FI seems like it might be good money after bad since it's probably only worth about that on a good day. Toying with buying an NB, swapping all the good bits over (hardtop, suspension) and selling it, but that'd put me another $4K into the project, though I do think I'd like an NB over an NA. Oh well, in garage it sits for now.

Tyler, just keep what you need to to convert it back to N/A if you ever sell it, and then sell the car and the kit separately to get back more of your money than selling them both together. Gotta pay to play, unfortunately \:\(

finished my civic, drove it for 1 week, then parked it for the winter, lol. puts a smile on my face when i drive it though. 480whp is completely useless in the cold. should be better in the warmer weather.

When thinking about amount sunk into a car vs. amount you could sell the car for, if you're any kind of car guy at all, you also have to figure in the value of the fun and joy that having a modded car brings to you prior to selling.

Non-car guys are very vocal about "depreciating assets", but they're idiots who miss out on the point of having an enthusiast car in the first place. It's not about making money or limiting the amount you lose, it's about getting the most out of what you love.

Yup, I got a guy. After doing some research it sounds like these cars aren't nearly the maintenance nightmare the internet portrays them as. Just like my car ;\)

You have to be selective with aftermarket exhausts, but bone stock they sound glorious from the driver's seat. The ITB induction noise mixed in with a raspy 8200 rpm I6 exhaust: HNNNNNNNGGGGGG

Boost your NA then. The benefits of the NB are most apparent in a daily driver.

I doubt you'll regret it. What kind of setup are you thinking about?

Last fun cars I drove were the C63 AMG coupe and the CLS 63 AMG. And a few others when Motor Trend was out for Car of the Year testing. That CLS 63 AMG took me to 180mph. Fastest I've ever been.

Still on the fence, but I'm kinda thinking of doing an E85 FFS coldside in the 230 whp range. The throttle response seems like it'd be sweet. I need to drive some turbo Miata's (only driven a stock MSM and an M45 NA thus far) to see if the turbo response is "good enough". The power is certainly easier and cheaper with a turbo.

I've been out of the buttsex game for awhile and this is the first I've heard of the FFS. It sounds like a killer option and I was just on Autotrader looking at NBs for the last 15 minutes There was a nice BRG '99 with 63k, but the guy was asking 7 grand and that's $1000 over KBB value. What was I saying before about 2 seaters?

Are most people running E85 with that setup? They are advertising ~190whp with their kit sans E85.
