Maybe move down to a 36T small ring? Ain't no aero gonna help you in the climbs...

At my weekly TT, I'm always amazed at what a difference weight makes in climbing speed--as I get rolled by 140lb flyweights.

I think I'll be fine with my 54/39 up front. I did the climb a few months ago with that and the 11-23 and while I was able to do it, it was a grind in that steep section. That 28 should be more than enough to let me spin up it.
I'm attempting to keep my diet in check over the next 4 weeks before the race. I'll be really happy if I can drop a solid 5 pounds and start the race at 150.

Oh, and the aero will be in full effect for the 85ish miles that are flat or downhill. \:D

likewise. some of my teammates always razz me because i dont big ring it enough at our mtb races. they usually do the whole race in the big ring, while i rarely if ever use it. but considering they havent beat me all season id say what im doing is working so im going to stick with it. im just a spinner at heart i guess.

The only time I mash is on my singlespeed and even that's geared more for spinning. I'm like s b-series Hinds engine--revvy.

Meh, I missed it.

Crossed the 100 mile mark for the week, though. Haven't done that in awhile. \:\)

This is the fastest I've ever been. Very satisfying that the training actually pays off.

nice job! and you still have more days left to ride! i have 103 miles after my 24 miles tonight. i should have 230 by sunday. 90 tomorrow and 40 sunday

feels good when that training pays off! i was happy when i actually did base training last winter and saw the payoff from that

Toasted my rear 80mm carbon clincher yesterday while training up at Tahoe. There is a long steep descent after climbing the summit, and after almost dying due to speed wobbles last time I was up there, I was gunshy and rode the brakes too much (despite trying hard not to) and now there's a bulge in the brake track where the carbon started to delam from the heat.

Oh well, just reserved a HED 6/9 (with aluminum brake track!) combo for the race so Im good there.

I don't have much occasion to ride the brakes like that but what happened to you is exactly why I wouldn't do carbon clinchers. The online bike world seems to hate all but the highest ends ones.

Aluminum track for me if I get deep V wheels because luddite

Well, they've been fine for the last several years so I have no complaints about them. This was all on me. I shouldn't have even tried riding them up there because I knew I'd be taking that hill super slow. The problem is that its just relentlessly steep for 3 miles and you pick up speed so fast that you pretty much have to ride the brakes.

No biggie, they'll still be fine on the trainer...and I dont plan on doing much riding at all in the next year anyways.

Starting to skim this post. I'm thinking I want to get more serious into cycling now. I'm doing 50-60 a week, but just in 5-6mile blocks commuting.

The problem is what kind of biking?

Depends on what you have time for and what will hold your interest. You guys have great trail riding pretty close right? The long rainy season might keep you from doing lots of miles on a road bike, so a MTB could be good bang for your buck.

The trails can get pretty sloppy though. I used to love mtn biking, even prefer trail running to road running. I love the forests.

my road biking interest isn't huge. I mean I'd like to do a couple big events(century, RAMROD(120miles and 20k of vert around MT Rainier), maybe cycle oregon). But generally it doesn't thrill me as much.

But I feel like mtn biking becomes a weekend only kind of thing. Like it'll sit in the garage a lot. Plus my weekends always seem busy as it is. At least with road cycling I could manage a lot of weekly practice.

Yep, first time since I've been riding on this course that we've had cooler calm conditions. My time improved 4min and 0.7mph over 30 miles than my last personal best. Gonna be tough to top that one.

A decent cyclocross bike can do double duty as a fast roadie and a capable off-road (moreso gravel road) bike. Get 2 sets of wheels--one set with skinny slicks and one set with fat knobbies. \:\)

if you arent interested in road too much, you are going to have a hell of a time pulling off a ride like that without some serious miles. that would murder me and i ride 8-10 hours a week and have 4000 miles in this year.... sounds like a awesome challenge though!!

pretty much what gamby said, if you are just getting your miles in by commuting a hybrid bike would work too

I'm obsessed with Rainier, any chance I get to acquaint myself with that mountain more I'll take. It's a lottery event, so I plan to enter, but I don't anticipate being drawn. I tend to train when I have a reason. And I'm always doing some sort of exercise, so it's just about focusing my training and dropping the things that won't help for an event.

Now I'm wondering if I should just put a drop bar on my mtn bike and some new components. A couple LBS say it's a pretty solidly built bike. It's from the early 90s, before mtn bikes were such specialized beasts. It's not light, but not heavy(for what it is).

One thing for sure, it needs some new gears. I'm starting to max out even on my up-hill ride.

I guess you could do it on a budget via ebay, but even then, the prices will escalate quickly.

A used cross bike that can accommodate wider tires might not be that much more expensive than a conversion. A lot of the early-90's stuff will be rather obsolete, too (that might not matter much, though).

How far in advance of the actual event does the selection take place?

I'm obsessed with Rainier, any chance I get to acquaint myself with that mountain more I'll take. It's a lottery event, so I plan to enter, but I don't anticipate being drawn. Go crush some dreams. \:D

Ironman Lake Tahoe is just about 2 weeks out now. Went down a tooth on my small ring because Im scared to death of the climb on the second loop.

I know I can do it no problem, but Im really really hoping I can have a good solid run this time around (somewhere in the 4 hour range) and if I can not blow my legs all to hell, I think I can do it.

I know one thing for a fact... It's going to be full on carnage out there.
