Sup 'yall? I wanted to start a thread where you can post up cool websites, flickrs, individual photos, etc... Stuff that inspires you, stuff that makes you think "yes, photography is good." We all have moments when we want to throw in he towel, so take a minute to share what inspires YOU.

Please refrain from posting dozens of images at a time, use links for huge groups of shots, etc, just be cool. \:D

To start it off, my favorite car photographers right now:

http://www.piepenburg.de/
http://www.matscordt.com/
http://romerphotography.eu/
http://www.duribeiro.com.br/
http://www.jeffludes.com/

How many of that 30 are HDR? Some look too fake to my eyes, others are just plain awesome.

I didn't see any that looked particularly cartoonish. FWIW, I've played with the HDR function on CS5 a little bit and while I haven't made any changes worth saving, it's not hard at all to avoid the cartoon halo look.

I caught most of it live. (caught about 5-6 hours on friday, and all 9 hours on sunday)

Really good stuff. A lot of it was review for me, this would have been amazingly helpful and saved me a ton of headaches if i could have had this a year ago when i was just starting, lol.

I'm really into surf photography, that would be my dream job (besides being a pro surfer). These guys inspire me, even though I haven't been able to get to the beach much lately.

Aaron Chang
http://www.aaronchanggallery.com

Jeff Divine
http://www.jeffdivinesurf.com

Tom Servais
http://www.tomservais.com

Sean Davey
http://www.seandavey.com

Drew Brophy (he's more of an artist. he does some unreal shit)
http://www.drewbrophy.com

And I can't forget....you guys inspire me, honestly. You all have a unique style which is awesome and helps me to want to get out there and become a better photographer.

Since I'm an art school fag, I probably draw more from mid 20th century film photographers than current digital shooters. But I think these guys are all worth knowing:

Joel Meyerowitz
http://www.joelmeyerowitz.com/photography/index.html

William Klein
http://www.masters-of-photography.com/K/klein/klein3.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V_F_MDfB2g

Robert Frank
http://www.metmuseum.org/special/robert_frank/images.asp

Oh, and I heartily recommend following Magnum Photos on facebook
http://www.facebook.com/MagnumPhotos

I read a bunch of modern blogs, but usually for technical or philosophical nourishment rather than graphic inspiration. Maybe we could do a thread on that too (or add them to this one?).

cheers,
scott

this must seem cliche at this point, but after being shown Richard Avedon's work, I fell in love with it.
http://www.richardavedon.com/

I really need to play with people more. His work, while not pretty, never seemed ugly. It was just disarming.

Chase Jarvis is great because he is willing to dissect his work for us. I'm not a huge fan of the results, but seeing the process makes the whole thing more....accessible or approachable.

+1 on the Nate love. There's an awesome Jedermann quality to seeing him/you post here and then see this killer stuff posted too. rock on, dude.

If any of you are interested in learning more about off-camera lighting or are afraid of how to begin with it, get the OneLight DVD from this guy:
http://www.zackarias.com

I watched this yesterday and now everything makes so much sense. I'm horribly inspired now to get out and try to do some of what he did.

14mm, it was filmed in 2005/06, so the 14-24 wasn't out yet. He's switched over to digital now, but he was still shooting film on an F5 at the time of the filming.

I would strongly think about the 14mm or the new 16-35 over the 14-24, if I keep my D80 for a while.

Some great great links in here!

14-24 is drool worthy for sure, with having to get the Nik to EOS adapter. I just hate how there is no good way to install filters aside from the new solution I saw from Lee filters. Of course you need all new filters now ;).

One of my most inspiring links is a friend I went to school with, Lisa Wiltse. She knew what she wanted do and has made it her life. She makes some fantastic images.

Any one of you guys who knows the difference between their elbow and their ass could get those exact same results... There is nothing about what he has done there that is mysterious, or even difficult lol... It's a simple case of balancing strobe and ambient, with the right color temp. Pretty much, that's Lighting 101. Just sayin'

Nate, it is not just the result it is also the ease in which he accomplishes the result. It seems like just second nature to him.

I might be able to get those results but I will have to shoot, chimp, shoot, chimp, shoot, chimp, curse, shoot, curse, curse, curse...and we are out of light...FUUUU...

Ummmm, did you not see him looking at his histogram and adjusting? Watch closer. It's not like he showed up and nailed the exposure with the first frame. The video is only showing the final portion of the shoot... That term is fucking retarded by the way, everyone chimps.

I did see that and in other videos he does the same thing but he gets where he wants to be pretty quickly.

My point was that it would take me too long and I would miss the light. The sun seems to set so quickly when you are taking pictures at sunset.

Which is why you pre-light. Wanna know how many cars I've shot at "magic hour" aka "magic 5 minutes?" ;\)

BTW I'm not saying the man doesn't have some sort of skills. The look is nice, simple and effective. I just think 'yall niggas is nutriding a bit too hard, considering what he is doing is not actually very difficult, nor is it beyond the realm of what 75% of CSI:P&P is capable of creating.

Neither is Ansel Adams's work. Just get to Yosemite and wait for the light. But somehow he did it and we don't.

Well Nate, maybe if your webpage/blog had tutorials or videos of your pre-lighting for the magic 5 minute shoots we could swing from your nuts too. Most of your blog seems focused on the post prossing and not the lighting setup. For more nut swingage you should write some books on the subject of lighting.

Who said I want nutswingers I'm just saying... There are a lot of interesting people shooters out there, McNalley is not one of them no me.

And Scoot... I know you didn't just put Ansel Adams on the same level as J.M.

No, Ansel's images are iconic and McNally's just aren't. But McNally understands light at least as well and does a good job of trying to share that knowledge.

Been listening to The Candid Frame podcasts all day long and finally got around to David Hobby's.

http://thecandidframe.blogspot.com/2010/08/candid-frame-98-david-strobist-hobby.html

An outstanding interview, and not at all about technical lighting stuff but philosophical stuff about surviving outside the traditional newspaper/magazine world that's dying off.

He takes some wicked pics, the one on the front page of his site is sick. Such a nice shot of a steelhead in action. I think I need a new body and some wider glass to take pics like that, lol.

Yea there is a lot of shitty post and I hate the way he generally places the ring light. The way it makes that unmistakable shadow just doesn't work for me, IMO it looks better to have some fill to alleviate those but what do I know.

I think he has his camera set to "vivid" and the sharpening set to high, and so doesn't do any post, BUT the shots themselves...

One of my favorite photographers is Dieter Appelt.

A lot of his shots are self portraits.

I bought a book about him about 15 years ago and have never seen it in print since.
Found a picture of it on ebay.

Here are some of his images. Warning, there may be man bits.

More here, possible warning

If anyone remembers Nine Inch Nail's video for Closer, you may recognize Appelt's work. He didn't have anything to do with the video, but it was inspired by his work decades before (Appelt was born in 1935).

There's some really good photography on this site, although interestingly enough, the site is that of a re-toucher.

Again, a site of a re-toucher. There is some really great stuff in there for portrait and lifestyle photographers though, lots of fantastic ideas worth stealing lol. \:D

There isn't much to it, honestly. You need plenty of light, clear water, and a great waterproof case (depending on what type of camera you're using). And good timing. I bet a lot of the blue was brought back in PP and then contrast was added since the water is probably somewhat murky.

I'm a fan of Jered Gruber
http://www.flickr.com/photos/smashred/sets/72157627484288690/
Love his style. Dramatic lighting, sharp contrast. When the images are color they're generally very striking but not overly saturated.

He sold everything and moved to Austria to be with his girl, then married her. Spent last year traveling Europe with the pro cycling tour and shooting for Castelli clothing. He made a shot for them that they then loaned to the Giro D'Italia for whatever reason, and the Giro used it for a poster. At the route announcement for this years race he was there to shoot for, I dunno, Castelli I guess. All of a sudden he sees his image on screen. And then sees that it's being passed out as posters! The girls giving them out wouldn't give him one because he didn't have appropriate credentials but he finally managed to get a poster, of his own shot. Now he's come back, had to sell his bikes to have money, and finally figuring out what mistakes he made and how to rectify that. Someone even jacked one of his images from flickr and entered it into a contest somewhere and won with it. Rough lessons for sure.

edit-for the copyright lawyers, there was something going on where the Giro didn't necessarily have the rights to the image, Castelli gave them the image without understand what it was to be used for, I don't think they have full rights (to pass on the image) either, but I don't remember the whole story. I learned, as did Jered, to be sure to look after your rights if you pass around images or get hired etc etc. Nobody is getting sued, there's some sort of compensation being worked out, but I think it's more of a "we'll hire you to shoot whatever you want in this years race"

edit 2- also Kristoff Ramon. For similar reasons http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristoframon/sets/72157628475312363/

edit 3-fuckin a look at this, this is the shot that another guy poached and entered into a contest and won with http://in-the-saddle.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Cancellara.jpg

edit 4- http://gruberimages.zenfolio.com/p699890271/h9dcbe7c#h3ba2a73d jered's print sales site. did some more reading and found out he's only been shooting since xmas 08. he got a d40x, and has progressed from there to a d90, d300, d700 and now a d3s. and he's 28.

edit 5 - kristoff ramón knocks my socks off http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristoframon/3651387969/in/set-72157616349828254/

That is REALLY awesome in every way except for the lens distortion... How that slipped through every round of approval is mind blowing actually.

Here's a really aggravating website, the guy's work is great but the web design is like way too complicated.

Not sure if this belongs here, but I think it's cool. A guy made a giant coin so it could be placed in tilt shift pics and make them look scaled down. Wicked level of detail.

Railtrek Media - http://railtrekmedia.com/

My friend started this company to produce train Movies. He is the one who got me seriously started in photography. I shot some of the stills on his website but all the video work is his, and its pretty awesome HD stuff. He has two releases out so far, one currently finishing production, and a few more slated for release this fall.

Lerro Productions- http://www.lerroproductions.com/photo-charters/past-charters

Lerro runs photo charters across the country. He sets up shots of steam trains using period correct models and settings. I've been on two of his trips and both have been very educatonal and a lot of fun. I hope to go on a lighthouse tour soon.

O. Winston Link - http://www.linkmuseum.org/collection.html

Pioneer of train photography and night time shooting. Link brought the trains into their surroundings, really focusing on their interaction with the towns and places they passed through and the people who worked with them.

Beautiful pics of Iceland, and a really good indictment of GAS (my take, he doesn't go into it). He shot all this shit with a 35 f2 (the RX1RII) and the A7R2 with an APS-C lens (18mm f4 equivalent Zeiss Touit). I struggle with trying to get all the right gear, and it's awesome to see such great work with such a small kit. It's all about seeing and what you bring to it after you shoot it.
