The lack of torque makes them awful daily drivers. They are only worth it if you are going 110+ on the highway.

Lol@ some of the suggestions. Hyundai? Crotch rocket?
Drove the M5, didnt really like it all that much. Too fucking complicated with all the doodads and 12430523 different engine/tranny/exhaust pipe diameter setting ftl.
Drove a new M3 coupe as well, nice car but didnt do it for me. Both cars rev for days, but I think I want something a little softer if its going to be just the one car.
Drove the new cooper S again, actually liked it. Maybe I'll trade the current mini for one and keep the vette.
A turbo porsche would turn into another project, plus I like the 997 way more but not for 100k.
The E55 at sub 30k is pretty tempting.

I've driven several, modified and stock. 384 ft/lbs. Sure, it PEAKS high in the rev range, but there is plenty from down low. Your statement was WAY off base. Try pushing the power button, and maybe the throttle pedal, next time. I'll admit that I've only driven it in anger a handful of times, but I'm only repeating what he told me about why he got rid of it. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he knows how to drive, perhaps even more than you. *GASPOMGUNPOSSIBLE* His current DD is a 997 Turbo, before that it was a GT3. He's been road racing for almost 40 years. This is him behind the wheel of one of his race cars (Laguna, I believe)
Here's a site for the other
http://www.trans-amseries.com/Drivers/AndyBoone.htm
Before that it was a couple of Ferraris and at one point he was running around in Ricky Rudd's old Lumina NASCAR.
I know your e-persona dictates that you respond to all threads with feigned pompous superiority, but it doesn't fly too well in this particular instance. Or maybe you just love it because it has BMW on the hood. Beats me.

I'm sorry but the V10 M5 is an absolute beast at all pts on the tach (friend owns one, driven it several times, many times a passenger) it launches like a beast on street tires and pulls like a proverbial freight train at ridiculous speeds. anyone saying that it lacks sufficient torque to be a DD is simply mistaken.
I don't care if its coming from Shumacher or Obama or shit even Oprah. The car is a fkucking animal. No manner of jaded uberweekendracer is going to make that statement any less wrong. And im not picking on him. Im sure his wallet is really, really large. awesome. He's still wrong
also, is somebody forgetting this is a 4-door sedan? What exactly is kicking the M5's ass in its class?
edit: i guess the cts-v and c63 amg run with it nicely
ok the low-end torch is a bit low for a car that runs a mid 12 @ 115 or so
um ok? but wouldnt that be discovered on a test drive or simply by looking at a dyno and the gear spacing? im sure you can just change the rear end: bam, problem solved

lol @ M5 being a torqueless shitbox....
people are amazing. Hey, if you can't trust the twice-removed word of a forum member's father's stepbrother, what can you trust? Guys who will blow their load on anything with a BMW logo, that's who!

damn I expected to be flamed every way but Sunday over here and I'm a little dissapointed
but i guess i do see where say a champ car driver or whatever would see the M5 as a gutless shitbox. sure its all relative. but then again it isnt.

I guess I dont see it, it still 0-60s in the 4s on street tires, there really isnt a lot to be gained without running some kind of DR. you can always launch it harder if you want. Just rolling out at 5 mph in idle and nailing it theres a bit of a lag. I wouldnt say it sucks, gearing is just a little tall and you cant really launch it at idle and expect it to do anything. or really do anything sub about 2500 rpms. it just boggles my mind that someone would think the whole car sucks based on its roll-on performance from idle or whatever
it pulls just as hard as my chipped 335i from a stop, which runs ~12 psi instead of like 6.5... which I guess may or may not be a good thing depending on how you look at it (a completely stock 6-speed M5)
for an m5 driver i guess thats a bad thing, tbh. but an i6 TT is supposed to have a ton of grunt, and the M5 is right there. Sure a C6 Z06 kicks both of our asses easily (well, maybe not so much on street tires thats just gonna show who has more traction imo)

alright, I'll accept that he's simply unreasonable :p
the ctsv surprisingly seems to 1-up the M5 in everything. zomg unpossible
