#lodestar #lodestar Post Master Supreme Registered: 06/05/06 Posts: 42768 Loc: Not in Kansas anymore	Transmission Grinds When Shifting Into 3rd Gear, Pops Out of 3rd Gear, or Is Hard to Shift Into 3rd Gear SYMPTOM The 6-speed manual transmission grinds when shifting into 3rd gear, pops out of 3rd gear, or is hard to shift into 3rd gear. NOTE: These symptoms can be intermittent and sometimes more noticeable in colder climates. PROBABLE CAUSE The transmission has a faulty 3rd gear synchronizer or 3-4 shift sleeve. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the 3rd gear set. DIAGNOSIS Drive a known-good vehicle under the same conditions as the customer’s complaint, and compare the shift quality. If the customer’s vehicle has noticeable shift quality problems, replace the 3rd gear set. NOTE: It is not uncommon for there to be some resistance or notchiness when shifting into third gear. Sometimes it just won't let me shift in the 3rd gear, but it will usually go in 2nd and 3rd attempts.

I had them pull my file up and it shows that I've had the car in for multiple complaints on the 3rd gear almost since the time of purchase. My complaint comments match exactly with the title of the TSB. I gave the guy in the service department the TSB number and just told him that I'm glad I'm not going crazy because the bulletin even says intermittent. I may stand corrected on my next comment(s): I believe the dealership is required by law, if a car is in for 3 or more complaints for the same issue (even without reproducing the problem) then a service bulletin is released, to fix the problem. I don't know if this is why they are willing to work with me or not but I should know more by tomorrow. I was told they had to order in the parts and that it would take two days once they are in to do the required work. I will definitely let everyone know once I have the problem fixed since I have seen multiple posts on other forums of dealerships saying they would fix it and then they don't. Pending on repairs I am more than willing to share any information I get from Honda with everyone else experiencing these problems, so we can all enjoy what we expected from these vehicles! Dude, After I figure out what they are going to do I'll let you know. I think it could possibly be with the syncros not stopping/lining up properly due to the colder weather and the characteristics of metal (expanding/shrinking/friction)??? Who knows but in warmer weather the syncro's seem to match up more often than in cold. I'm still wondering even with a replacement if we won't still have the same issues..... tobesi tobesi Jr Poster Registered: 07/23/07 Posts: 109	a person from 8th got the 3rd gear fixed, and he said that it's still (Problem 1) notchy (that's totally fine) but it doesn't (problem 2)refuse to go into 3rd gear or (problem 3)pop out of gears anymore. I think Honda should fix the last two issues for all cars for safty reasons.

The 2nd and 3rd issue i listed above happened a lot lately. It grinds some when its warm, but mostly just notchy and hits the "wall" when its warm. I think my service guy is pretty cool and will get it fixed. I took my short shifter out. davecalgary davecalgary Jr Poster Registered: 03/11/08 Posts: 81	Dealers make a lot of money on warranty work, but they are expected to keep the # of hours to a certain amount based on sales volume, population density etc. If I were having a problem as serious as some of you guys say you are, I would phone ahead, ask to speak with the service MANAGER, not the shop foreman, and while speaking to him/her arange to meet with them and explain the problem. If you're persistent enough they'll ok the work just to have you leave them alone. Last time I did this I even got a free detailing

OvErKiLL OvErKiLL Jr Poster Registered: 03/15/06 Posts: 111 Loc: 6o4	i have a 06 si and i am from vancouver and i am experiencing the 3rd gear problem. notchy and poping out, with the occasional grinding after it pops out. anyone from vancouver here don't get servicing frmo Happy honda in burnaby. their customer service there is SHIT. the service guy out right told me that they won't do any recall work on my car if i don't do any service with them. they said they should be doing all the oil changes on my car. i told them that mr. lube is certified and a lot cheaper than them. thats my 2cents.

He did experience the issue but at the time they told me it was a normal characteristic of the car since this was before the service bulletin. After the bulliten was released and I called they arranged the repairs. Currently I am sitting in Seattle and my car is sitting in a Chicagoland dealership being repaired tomorrow. I will have an update after I come home and drive it for some miles to see if this really has fixed the problem. They are replacing 3rd gear. If you are experiencing the issue just keep taking it back to Honda and just try to be as polite and persistant as possible. Eventually something will happen. Then the Pirates where in town so I stayed in the city with 5 buddies to watch the chubbies kick our ass Saturday. Out of commission last night and I'm just getting ready to drive around and pick up some clay and wax to detail my car since it's a perfect day. So I will let you guys know if I have any problems but the shifting felt amazing on my short ride home so now I have to get the mental block out of my mind about 3rd gear grinding and popping and being notchy. They showed me the sleeve that was in question and 3rd gear and there was almost no damage to the part but the new 3rd gear set is supposed to be a "fix" they told me and not just a replacement of the same part. I'll let everyone know how it feels throughout the next week driving to work and around town. I have about 21,000 miles on it and have had the problem since the first week I had it. I will update after I get the car back, which will probably be tomorrow (big job from what I understand).

I don't think they even drove it and they ordered the parts. I think you'll be pleased, only problem is that it's warm now so I can't wait until winter to see if the fix really works. The dealership said that it was close to $3K worth of parts and labor. Regardless of what the cost was, I am pleased with the end result.

He is right. Dealerships DO make decent money off warranty work, but it's based off the reimbursement table managed by HoA. I called and they told me I'd have to bring it in and they'd have to duplicate it to even consider it. Well, I'm not wasting my money to drive down there when it's not doing it all the time. It will slip out of 3rd gear about 2 times a week. They said they aren't going to "throw parts" into my car and "waste their time" fixing it if they can't duplicate it. Damn that pissed me off. I told them I was gonna call corporate and that's what I did. Corporate stayed on the phone with me and dialed 3 way to West Side Honda in Knoxville, TN. They set me up an appointment for tomorrow (sat the 26th) They were super nice about it. Let's hope they fix it. I usually have no problems out of Honda but you think after giving Cleveland TN Honda so much business in the past 5 years they would appreciate me a little bit more. Their services DPT is BS. Told them it was rough to get into third gear, popped out occasionally. They kept it for a few hours, said it did. I waited a few weeks for the parts to arrive and they did the work. No problem whatsoever.

Was gonna get it back wednesday. But they said they effed up the speedsensor so they couldn't test it til they got one. So on friday the new speedsensor came in and apparently when they drove it, something was still wrong or they broke something, they weren't very clear when they said it was still messed up. I have I/H reflash and I hope they don't screw with my shit or reflash the ecu or something weird. They said I definately had a problem with 3rd gear. While it didn't pop out on the one occasion they drove it, it did provide unusual resistance and grinding when trying to get into gear. They ordered the parts for me and told me to bring the car in thursday morning and plan to pick it up saturday for safe measure.

They said they noticed it and they ordered the parts. I just took the car in today and they are splitting the engine/tranny and replacing a bunch of stuff...
