As time has gone on, this thread has become a center of some great information. With that being said, it is now a sticky. If you make a new post re: the PC7424 after reading this thread, you're a moron. Anyways, stick to this thread for a detailing discussion. THIS IS THE PLACE FOR DETAILING TALK!

I have noticed time and time again you recommend this buffer. I am set on purchasing one when the sun finally breaks and is out for good.

However I have been notcing ALOT of different accessories when it comes to pads/bonnets/etc.

Any links or info on what I should purchase, or make sure it comes w/?

Thanks

Make sure it comes with a pad that allows you to affix polishing pads with Velcro backing. Griot's Garage sells all that stuff for the PC machines.

Yes, absolutely get the velcro backing pad, that makes it exceptionally easier to change pads.

As for the pads, how long do they last?

How do you all clean them?

I can't afford to be buying pads all the time..

They should last a long time. Just be careful because the velcro will peel off the back if you rip it off too fast from the backing plate.

Theyre easy to clean, just a bucket of warm water and whatever that pad cleaner shit is.

pinch the pads under running water. Works great.

Now, the pads have to be dry, or they'll start forming mold. Ask me how I know ;\)

You don't want to wring out the pads, especially the velcro-backed pads, because the backing will start to separate. Go outside, FAR AWAY FROM YOUR CLEAN CAR, put the pad back on the buffer at low speed, and just spin the water out. IT only takes a minute or so and the pad will be completely dry, but it will fling water all over the place.

I paid $150 from Griot's Garage, but that was probably a decade ago.

I actually just ordered a replacement velcro backing pad for my P/C, as the original rubber is dry and badly cracked.

Other than some polish "fling" stains and other signs of use, my P/C is still running as good as new. Well worth the money. I've probably polished various cars over a hundred times with it.

I like the Griot's Garage orange polishing pads. Get a 3-pack for $30.

I'm in a similar boat as SiAdam.
I've kinda narrowed down my selection to 3 different kits.

I think kit #3 is your best bet as it comes with the most stuff. With that being said, Adam- the thing you need to know is you begin with a cutting pad (whether it be light, medium, or heavy cut), and then just work your way back down, going to a polishing pad, and then a finishing pad. For my pads, I go yellow, white, black, and I *think* I got my kit off of autopia somewhere, its been awhile though.

-Matt

Also, feel free to post these in the detailing thread!

Meh, its alright. It doesnt come with a finishing pad or a heavy cutting pad. I would get one that comes with one pad for the following:

Heavy Cutting
Medium Cutting
Light Cutting
Finishing

With that being said, I think youd be better off buying one of the above kits.

You said you go w/this order Yellow, White & Black.

I have
White 6.5 inch Polishing Foam Pads
Less dense foam formula for the application of waxes, micro-fine polishes and sealants. This pad has very light cutting power so its perfect for pre-wax cleaners.

Gray 6.5 Inch Finishing Foam Pads
Composition is firm enough to withstand added pressure during final finishing to remove buffer swirls. It has no cut and will apply thin, even coats of waxes, sealants, and glazes.

Blue 6.5 Inch Finessing Foam Pad
Flat pad has soft composition for applying glaze, finishing polish, sealants, and liquid waxes. Flat pad provides full contact with paint surface to minimize the pressure applied by the user.

Orange Low Profile Foam pads
The 5.5 inch pad will remove light to moderate scratches and swirls and light oxidation. Firm, high density foam for scratch and defect removal. Use this pad with polishes and swirl removers. It’s an all around pad that will work on most light to moderate imperfections.

Ok, w/all that out of the way..what order should I use them ?

Also, w/what combination of waxes should I use. I have a sealer liquid wax that a local detailer uses, called liquid Glass I believe..

Everything else I will need to purchase locally. What other waxes/cleaners/polishes/glazes/sealers/etc do I need.

I am going to wash/clay before I start...got a big show on Sat to attend.
