Anyone had their testosterone level checked?

My trainer suggested I go to this men's vitality clinic to get my levels checked just out of curiosity, I don't know if he suspected the levels to be low based on my results so far or he figured why not know?

Anyway, I went in on Friday and got the results today...my total testosterone was 413 and the free testosterone was 7.2. According to my insurance company, above a 348 is considered normal and I don't know about the free testosterone. But looking online, total testosterone should be between 300 - 1000 and free testosterone should be between 9 - 30.

http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Clinical+and+Interpretive/83686

The clinic I went to says I should be between 600-800 and 8.5 - 25.0, or at least that's what they keep you at if you do testosterone treatments, but then again they are trying to push their product.

Anyone know more about this stuff?

413 is a bit on the low side but it does still fall in a "normal" range.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

I have. I was on the low side according to the doctor. I can't remember my level, but they said it wasn't anything drastic - but enough to research further.

She referred me to an Endocrinologist who has given me another list of tests to try. I'm guessing this will not go anywhere and is actually just pointless because most treatments likely have side effects that will outweight the benefit of the treatment since I'm hardly abnormal.

I dunno...maybe. I'm working my ass off in there though, sweating like a pig every workout and I'm down 8 lbs.

My doctor is an old muslim woman. It was a bit funny hearing her ask me about erections and performance though.

Never been checked.

But the thing is, there's a lot of suggestion that low T is exxagerated. At least from what I've heard of older low T, basically, your testosterone is supposed to drop from 50 onward. And even sub 50 there's a pretty broad range.

I thought there was some evidence that heavy weight lifting actually increases T production as well. It's not a fixed thing that "needs" treatment. More a strength regime increases T, which builds strength...

Yeah, looks like there are some natural ways to increase T and the #1 seems to be to lose weight and build muscles.

That's why a lot of people bring up a starting strength style program.

Supposedly heavy Squats are linked to localized Testosterone prodution, which some people presume raises total blood levels(not substantiated).

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

My total was 284 in October. Talked to some clinics, went on Clomid for a while. 3 weeks later total was 1195. Cut back on the Clomid a bit, few weeks later is was 1258 but E2 was 67. So we upped my anastrozole and we're going to finish tapering off the Clomid. If I can keep a decent production then great, if not it's injections.

Bunch of morning wood, horny all the time. At least until my E2 shot up and that killed my libido. A general overall sense of well-being, kinda just didn't give a fuck about stuff that used to bother me. For the first time in the gym, I actually started getting a pump when working with higher reps. Not that a pump means I'm swole or anything, but it was a neat feeling to be sure. I started rolling BJJ more confidently and ultimately better. Better recovery after BJJ for sure.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

What's E2 and BJJ?

I have to say I am curious about what effects it would have on me, even though mine is not super low. I have no problem getting a pump at the gym and no problem with getting wood \:D but my sex drive is pretty crappy (always has been though) and I get annoyed and bothered by the smallest stuff, I go full rage mode in like 2 seconds, it's like I have tourettes or something...I wonder if that's related to the testosterone levels or just the way I am.

I'm going to try some natural stuff first...continue lifting, continue losing weight and up my fat intake (good fats...nuts etc) as I guess that affects the testosterone production. I'll do another test in maybe a month and go from there.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

E2 is estradiol, aka estrogen. You need a little bit of it, too little or too much can mess stuff up. BJJ is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

Ah ok, looking at my blood test, my estradiol was 26.0 (normal range is 7.6 - 42.6).

I did have some other stuff that was out of whack a little, aside from the Free Testosterone (7.2...normal is 8.7 - 25.1). My BUN was 23, which is high, normal being 6 - 20 and my BUN/Creatine Ratio was high at 22, normal being 8 - 19. Both of those are related to a high protein diet though I guess so that makes sense, I'm having 175g - 200g per day.

Also had high Neutrophils and low Lymphs.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

Another thing that has changed was my cholesterol.

November
--------
total - 270
LDL - 191
triglycerides - 139
HDL - 51

December
--------
total - 216
LDL - 146
triglycerides - 134
HDL - 43
January
-------
total - 183
LDL - 119
triglycerides - 88
HDL - 46

So in a little over 2 months, my total went down 87 points, LDL went down 72 points, and triglycerides went down 51 points. The only things I did in addition to raising my testosterone was to cut out the 2 eggs a day I was eating and add in 6 ounces of mixed vegetables a day. I'm not saying it was 100% due to more testosterone, but I'm pretty sure it has a part.

Maybe some are. I'm not really looking forward to a lifetime of shots, AI, hcg, and paying for all that. If this Clomid "restart" gets me going and I need nothing else I'll be ecstatic.

I tend to agree with Diezel. I measured on the low side and now the doctor wants me to go through a barrage of tests, but I'm guessing the end result would be it's a complete waste to bother treating it. I'm sure the treament has side effects and would require continuous monitoring/testings.

I'd rather just ignore this shit.

How low did you measure?

I think it's probably easy for us guys who are in the normal range, even if on the low end of normal, to judge but if it's super low and clinically low, I'm sure it's no fun.

From my appointment with the clinic, it seems like a pain in the ass to do. You have to get weekly shots at the clinic and there are quite a few side effects. One being that your body actually completely stops producing testosterone, so now you have to get HCG shots to get it to make it again...you have to cycle on and off with the T shots. Then you get man boobs, so you have to take some other shit to combat that. There's also the high likely hood of making you sterile and fucking up with your blood.

If you're in the normal range, even on the low side, then I say fuck doing anything. I'd probably think different if it was actively affecting my life.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

I can't remember, but it was similar to you. Something like 10 is the bottom of the normal range and I was at 8.

The whole side effects cycle and testing is what makes this worthless to me. If the doctor never decided to test for it, I wouldn't know any better and wouldn't be wasting my time.

I've probably done about 20 blood tests the last year. I have to go for another 2 right away. Waste of time.

Yeah I just hope I can stay at a better level after I come off. Obviously my testes will produce testosterone IF they are being told to. For whatever reason my pituitary was not telling them to.

HCG can maintain testicular size and function wile on TRT, but it's another 2-3 injections a week and more cost. My doc will let me self-inject if we do go TRT so at least I wouldn't have to go in multiple times a week.

I'm thinking more and more of trying the testosterone therapy because honestly I have been busting my ass for over 4 months now and the results are very minimal. Fat loss aside, it doesn't seem like I'm putting on barely any muscle or really getting any stronger. I have a feeling you guys are going to say I'm doing it wrong etc etc but that can't be it, I'm lifting heavy, sweating my ass off and sore as hell after almost every workout and results are pretty pathetic.

Aside from the working out part of it, my motivation is shit this days and I feel pretty tired. I'm the youngest out of my group of friends and it seems I'm always the one that gets sleepy/wants to end the night first.

I'm not saying not to look into test therapy, but how are things otherwise? Stress/lack of sleep/depression are all test killers. Something like Wellbutrin might give you a nice boost in all the areas you're complaining about.

Re: Who's had their testosterone level checked?

Food unfortunately doesn't do much for testosterone levels. I guess it can some, but not drastically if that's what's needed.

I actually had another appointment with a different clinic this morning and they took blood again, should have results early next week. It's been 2.5 months since the last test so I'm curious if levels have changed at all. I actually realized that the last test I took was shortly after working out that morning so the 413 could have actually been an elevated number vs normal (lifting weights apparently rises your testosterone for a time period after you're done working out).

I liked this clinic a lot better, it seemed much more medical/professional in their approach...went over complete medical history, did a physical exam whereas the first place was like "Ok lets start giving you shots!". It's also much more affordable at $35/week vs $63.50/week with the other place.

But I wonder how many people's body would respond the say way? And if you have an actual medical condition, doing what he did wouldn't do shit I don't think...sounds more like he was eating like shit/not exercising/not sleeping etc which caused his T levels to sink and he was able to bring them back to normal for him, if that makes sense.
