How much shit are you carrying? I have an unfortunate amount of packs at this point. If you're carrying the kitchen sink, an actual backpack is the way to go, I have a Manfrotto I like because it kinda functions as a sling too since it has side access and a quick zip top. If you're doing long day hikes and want to take a bunch of gear they're the way to go. Backpacks with a full zip are a bitch to get in and out of IMO, I have an old Lowepro that fits a shit load but is a bitch to get into since you have to unzip a full 180 degree zipper which means you have to take it off. If you have to take it completely off to get into it I wouldn't buy it. Newer bags are better. I'm really lightening my bag these days, and I've found I can fit my 7R, 16-35 Zeiss, 25 Batis, 55 Zeiss, 85 Batis, batteries and some extension tubes for my "macro" needs (I don't do any 1:1 work, just need maybe 1:3 I've found) in this little thing:

It's the easiest bag I've ever had to get in and out of and it turns into a waist pack which I think is the most comfortable type of bag (other than a full backpack) to do long hikes in if a backpack isn't an option (which it isn't when doing overnight trips where all the rest of your gear like tents, pads, cooking shit etc is required). I can fit the thing under the top compartment of my backpacking pack so I can pack it in, set up camp, then do day trips with the waist pack. I've tried other solutions like REI bags that fold into themselves but they're a fucking bitch to get in and out of IMO. This is my new favorite bag and it encourages me to pack light which is great. Only thing I don't like about it is no tripod attachment provision, but it's so small and light it'd be awkwardly weighted anyway. I just make my wife carry it. \:D

I have a larger Lowepro messenger bag which I find uncomfortable since it fits enough shit that I load it to the point it gets heavy (it is easy to get into though), and Domke F2 that fits even more and has a backpack strap you can attach, but it has so little structure that the opening binds and makes it hard to get the camera out of. I'm auditioning a Lowepro Inverse that is a waist pack with a detachable shoulder strap and it holds a bit more than the Think Tank but is less comfy over the shoulder and is harder to attach to my backpacking pack.

I have a lowepro, I think its the AW302, backpack that is at capacity. Its well padded and comfortable, but gets heavy over time. Plus, its an awful game of tetris trying to fit everything in there, and it all only fits one way. I am going to upgrade to the thinktank airport v2 since it will hold my 100-400 and 70-200 lenses upright, which should free up a bunch of space for everything else.

I have a Timbuk2 camera bag insert into a medium Timbuk2 bag. It was a lot cheaper than any dedicated camera bag and has 2 adjustable partitions. I can fit my D7000, charger, 2 batteries, filters, and a few small misc. items. It'd be tight with multiple lenses but, for me, it's the perfect day bag. That, and I already had a spare Timbuk2 bag which made the decision easy.

I wanted something that i could use as a day pack and carry-on as well as a camera bag. So far so good but my kit is pretty small. Had no problem fitting my Pentax k-30 with the DA*60-250 f4 I rented this summer attached but that was about as long of a lens/body combo that would fit mounted. For the weddings I shot it handled the k-30, DA*50-135 f2.8, HD DA 20-40mm Ltd, and a Yongnuo flash and controller in the camera partition fine. Might be tight for a full frame Canon or Nikon with a 70-200 2.8 or longer lens though, Pentax aps-c lenses and bodies are pretty compact by comparison.

I have a few Clik backpacks. They're well built, and a Think Tank Shape Shifter that's my primary pack. The Clik Contrejour is the big hiking pack I like bags that don't broadcast the contents.

Brazillion Dollar Home. You'll start taking things out because of weight, not lack of space. And it'll pretty much never spill your gear on the ground.


Walking miles with it can make you hate life though.

I use this one while traveling around Europe. It has anti theft stuff built into it like wire mesh sides, metal cables in straps, and latching zippers.

So I got my Thinktank Airport Security 2.0 today. All I can say is I'm glad this thing is a rolling case! Weighs a TON! Holds all my stuff with plenty of room to spare though so I am happy.

2 bodies, 11 lenses, 2 speed lights, 3 transceivers, filters, chargers, cleaners, external hard drive...

Just got it yesterday, still playing around with the optimal setup. As it was configured when delivered, my bodies would not fit up top as they are now. Both bodies are gripped and have L-Bracket plates installed so maybe thats the issue. I'm going to keep playing with it to get it set up right. But I'm extremely happy with it so far. Plenty of room and much better build quality than my other bags. It just weighs a ton...

Does the bag itself weigh a ton or is it just because you have all your gear? Been looking at this same bag myself. Does it have a hard case she'll or liner? I'm hoping to find a hard case solution.

It's not a hardshell the way a pelican case is. It still has "soft" sides, but the padding is much thicker and more rigid than my lowepro's are. It's a very sturdy bag. The sides are firm and do not sag or bow out when stood upright with the main flap open. Everything is nicely reinforced. The dividers are probably 2x as thick as those in my lowepro.

Shipping weight per UPS was 16lbs and it came in a cardboard box with no padding or anything like that. There are several extra dividers that come with it, so you can change the configuration. I'd say the bag itself, without the extra dividers, weighs a good 13-14lbs. It's probably pushing 40-45lbs with all my stuff in it. The bag comes with shoulder straps, but I can't see myself carrying it around fully loaded.

Not all that stuff goes everywhere with me all the time. Depends on what I'm shooting. The bag is more like a storage unit to get everything in one place. I don't think I have that ridiculous of a kit...I have the 16-35 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L, 70-200 2.8L ii IS and 100-400Lmk1 zooms; 40 2.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100mmL Macro, 135 f/2L, and 200 2.8L primes and a 2xiii teleconverter.

I got the 85/135/200 trio because at the time the 70-200 was $2499 and out of my price range. The trio of primes was several hundred dollars cheaper than the zoom. Now that I got my 70-200 for $1799, I may sell the 200 and 135. That's the only real redundancy I see in my gear.

In the future I hope to add the 11-24mm. Plus if the v2 of the 100-400 focuses noticeably faster than v1, I may upgrade that as well if I can find a buyer for my V1.

for the "take everything just in case" scenario, I have a 7 million dollar home from crumpler. Like scott said above, walking around with it after a while can be a bitch but it definitely holds things very well.

My "take the camera and a couple lenses bag" is a tamrac backpack (can't remember the model) but I didn't realize how small it was from the description so I want the one larger so I can easily put my body and more than 2 small lenses with me.
