You guys ever use teleconverters?

I'm looking to put together a really light kit for a backpacking trip coming up, and don't want to take my 70-200 as that would defeat the light part. I'm hoping a 2x teleconverter on my 105 macro will give me some reach if I need it, but if they bork the image quality then it's not worth it. Any opinions?

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

I have a canon 2x mk3 that I use with my 100-400mm. It kinda stinks because I lose autofocus and manual focusing moving subjects like birds in flight is tough. But when I use it on my faster lenses (135 f/2, 200 f/2.8) its no problem.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

AF isn't consideration, it's mostly useless on my setup anyway (A7R with adapted Canon lenses), and this will be for landscapes anyway. I just want to know if the IQ goes really sideways or just a little. I'm OK with just a little.

You want a teleconverter for landscape photography? Weird, but whatever. I had the Canon 1.4x and it does add some softness to your images, you WILL notice it.

I just don't want to carry my 70-200, was hoping to get away with a TC on my 105 macro for a little more reach without adding too much weight. Only other option is crop in, which, given 36 MP, isn't a totally unreasonable option.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

I used my 1.4x with a 70-200 quite a bit for the extra reach. Then I got a 400mm. The TC has pretty much sat in my bag at home every since.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

i have a 1.7, but the only time i really want to use it is at the landspeed races. It's fair. Decent. I haven't tested it at different apertures to really learn it well though. The 2x is supposed to be pretty rough. I JUUST deleted a pic like two days ago that was the 70-200, 1.7, cropped off the d800 of the Challenger 2 truckin' along at over 400 mph from a good, I don't know, at least a good 100 yards out. It was better than nothing, probably could have been better if I'd practiced with it.

You will lose some quality like Nate said. I use a 2X III with a 70-00 2.8 II and 135L and the results are not bad at all. IQ is surprisingly good in that I really don't notice a difference with those two lenses. I tried it out on my F/4 non-IS 70-200.... Once.

Cropping in might not be a bad alternative to a 1.4X TC.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

I have the Canon 2x. One thing to consider is that you lose something like 1-2 full stops with that thing on. So if you're using an F/4 lens, adding that thing makes it considerably darker, so it's only good in like broad daylight. Useless in low light.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

Pretty much everything I'd use it for would be fine for tripod work, but I'm thinking for what I'll run across on this trail 105mm will be good enough, maybe a bit of crop if need be.

Re: You guys ever use teleconverters?

made my pics look a little funny. The background blur, particularly. took the creaminess out of it. This was on my Canon stuff.
