New gear after 8 years..D810..update for 14-24mm

New D810 showed up on the doorstep today. Replacing my old ass D50 I bought back in 2006

Got the 50mm f/1.4 for my kid pics and a 24-85 f/3.5 for general use. Gonna have to wait on the 14-24mm f/2.8 because its out of stock (of the course the one I'm really drooling to have).

UPDATE 12/20/2014:

Finally got the 14-24mm. What a fun lens. I've never shot anything less than 24mm in my life so this is just mind blowingly fun to shoot with.

Jealous.

Did you buy the 24-85 brand new, or was it part of a kit?

Please tell me you won't be keeping the 24-85. Do that sensor a favor and ditch that thing.

Re: Finally pulled the trigger on new gear after 8 years..D810

Border performance seems to be meh, and that bothers me (makes finding acceptable UWA's difficult). That sensor hides no flaws. I'm switching up my bag since getting my A7R, some lenses that were "good enough" before just aren't now.

If he's not a pixel peeper it'll probably be fine, but if he's not a pixel peeper, why get that body?

Re: Finally pulled the trigger on new gear after 8 years..D810

Border performance always declines as you reach wider focal lengths, especially for FF lenses. Plus, these "test" sites are questionable for the most part since i've owned several lenses they've tested that didn't get the best reviews yet I always had great results from them.

My tokina 17-35 isn't supposed to be very good in the corners but i've seen great results from it thus far.

I mean, possibly, and I'm all for it. Especially if it's Glaziers. I've spent a lot of money there, good people, but the 14-24 isn't exactly a new lens. No reason for it not to be in stock anywhere.

Re: Finally pulled the trigger on new gear after 8 years..D810

I mean, I guess I could adapt the 14-24 now, but I already have an UWA that doesn't take filters. I'm looking at trying out the new 16-35, it's supposed to have better corners than all of Canon's prior UWA's. Plus, $2K for the Nikon is pretty fucking rude.

Re: Finally pulled the trigger on new gear after 8 years..D810

I kinda wish I'd gone with the 17-35 instead of the 14-24. I'd like to have that little bit of overlap, and I think I'd be ok without the 2mm

Nice man, your brain is going to fucking explode when you see the depth of the files. Do a test. Shoot something like 4 stops under, at ISO 64, and bump the shit out of it in post. Then do the same at a high ISO, like 6400 or higher even. You're going to like what you see.

Dood you aint kidding. A lot of my skillset is in post so this camera was ideal. A lot of new (to me) features are just blowing my mind right now. Active D-Lighting, NR, Flat, Auto ISO, etc etc. All features I've never experienced on a camera before. The focus and light this thing achieves is incredible.

Oh..and I can already tell I'm going to need a rack of hard drives.

I don't buy from them. I had a bad experience with them a long time ago and swore I'd never buy from them again. I'm actually trying to see if my company wants to buy the 14-24 for me for an upcoming project. If not I'll buy it local (or used as a CSi'er has PM'ed me about \:\) )

One I didn't change the recovery slider at all, the other I pushed it all the way up. I hardly saw any recovery with my d700, but the 800 has actually been useful a number of times in recovering from the highlights

Love that sensor! I single shoot everything now. No more bracketing. Expose for the highlights and shadow recovery like woah!

Yeah I've been shooting to expose for the brights more, and pulling up form the shadows, and am really happy with the results. Still sort of learning how to shoot with it, but it's been good.

Re: Finally pulled the trigger on new gear after 8 years..D810

calibrate your monitor? lol I don't know what to tell you, the highlights are blown out in one, in the other I was able to bring back just enough to still notice the horizon and some of the soft detail in the ground. Also between cowboys legs, the blow out is back.

It's clearly visible with your monitor calibrated. Like a lot of others though, I had to learn the hard way about how important calibration is.

11-24 f4 L is rumored soon-ish, for nearly $3K, so I shan't be getting one, but damn if that doesn't sound like a crazy range.

Congrats!

I have the Sony E-mount 16mm F2.8 lens and the Sony Fisheye converter for that lens. This combination has a magnification of only 10mm.

You are right, they are a lot of fun.
