Emount Lens Help

I'm currently using an NEX-5R and have the following Sony Emount lenses:

-16mm prime with UWA and fisheye adaptors
-18-55mm kit zoom
-50mm prime
-55-210mm zoom

I don't use the 16mm much, that was an impulse buy. I love the 50mm, but it's just not wide enough for chasing my kid around. I also love the 55-210, but I rarely need that level of zoom.

I HATE the 18-55 - I am constantly having soft focus issues with it. When I shoot with the 50 or the 55-210, my shots are very sharp.

I see a few options here:
1. Try another version of the 18-55
2. Try the power zoom 16-50
3. Buy a prime in the 30 to 35mm range

I was thinking of the Sony SEL35f18 or the Sigma 30. The Sony lens is between $400 and 450 and the Sigma is only $200.

I want this lense for candids of my family while around the house and in the yard.

Re: Emount Lens Help

Have you tried the micro focus adjustment feature on the 5r?

If so, then I say get the Sigma 30.

If you've got MFA on that body, then definitely try it out before scraping the 18-55mm all together.

I think the MFA is only possible using an adaptor with a-mount lenses \:\(

Has anyone else reported similar issues with the 18-55?

Depends on who you trust. While the 16mm is notoriously soft in the corners, the kit lens seems to be pretty "good" by pixel-peeping internet reviewers. Of course, being named a kit lens automatically makes it crap by some people's standards.

Kit lens?!?!?! OHWTFBBQITSCRAP! That's too bad, it seems like it's the perfect range for what you want to do.

It is. I think I'm going to grab the Sigma for fun and see what it can do. There's a zeiss 16-70mm which would be perfect, but it's $1,000 - which I'm not paying.

Most kit lenses are perfectly fine for general shooting these days.

If you're finding corner softness on your wide angle lenses, give us an idea of how much. ALL wide angle lenses will have some degree of softness (curved glass vs. flat sensor...)

I'm not concerned with corner softness on the pancake - I'm worried about center softness on the kit zoom lens. Maybe I got a bad example? I just don't feel like buying another just to find out.

I'm just not looking to spend that kind of money on a lens right now.

I've been reading about that lens the last couple of days. I'm seriously thinking about getting it in Sony Alpha A mount. I've got several E and A mount lenses that I can trade in at my local camera store towards it.

I have the LAEA-4 E mount lens adapter to allow me to use it on my Nex-5R or Nex-3.

I ended up with the Sigma 30 - screwed around with it this weekend and like it so far.

Very nice. I have read good things about that lens. Looks to be a real bargain.
