So Nikon finally updated the 80-400...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/936121-REG/nikon_80_400mm_f_4_5_5_6g_ed_vr.html

It's now an AF-S "G" lens. And it's $2697.

Or you could pick up a 70-200 f/2.8 and a teleconverter cheaper.

"G" just means "gelded", or without an aperture dial. Pretty much standard for DSLR lenses moving forward but they use it to also distinguish the newer from the older.

People have been waiting a while for this lens to come out and of course Nikon butt fucks them with their pricing. Like Scott said, you can get the 70-200 + TC for cheaper than this lens.

Re: So Nikon finally updated the 80-400...

AF-S = Nikon's most current auto focus
IF = Internal focus so that the lens length stays the same and doesn't rotate while focusing or zooming if applicable
N = Nano coated elements
ED = special glass in the elements
VR = Vibration Reduction
G = gelded (lacking direct aperture control)
DX= designed for cropped sensor cameras

Scott, what's your experience with teleconverters? I haven't bought one yet because I can't decide between 1.7 or 2.0. If I want 1.7 I can use my d300s, is what I figure, but I hear from some that the 2 doesn't provide a nice image....but then I see a shot on amazon with the 2 and 1.7 stacked together, on a d7000 that's tack sharp. The guy just used proper technique with a tripod and mirror up mode.

Never used a teleconverter, my only telephoto lens reportedly gets super derpy with one.

If it focuses fast enough now for birds in flight, it might be worth it. I love the first gen even with the slow focusing. And it was also expensive when new - but cheaper used (I paid ~$1k for mine from KEH).

Well, Nikkor >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Canon, so that's one reason.
